We leave Nusa Lembongan and sail along Bali's rugged northern coastline, passing hundreds of traditional sailing boats hauled up onto the black sand beaches. Their white hulls line the shoreline as far as the eye can see, creating a striking contrast against the dark volcanic sand. Out on the water, however, many of these beautiful vessels are under sail, their colourful sails brightening the horizon and adding a splash of colour to the dramatic coastline. Along the way, we're treated to some amazing wildlife encounters. A small pod of pilot whales makes an appearance, followed by a large group of playful dolphins that spend time surfing our bows and racing alongside No Regrets II. After a mid-passage refuelling stop, we arrive at the wonderfully welcoming town of Sangkapura on Bawean Island. From the moment we step ashore, we're greeted with warm hospitality, including the chance to sample a traditional local fish dish. The locals then take us to a nearby school, where students eagerly practice their English with us—much to our embarrassment, as their English is far better than our Indonesian! Not content to stay in town, we hire scooters and set off to explore the island, visiting a beautiful freshwater volcanic lake and taking in the laid-back charm of Bawean. We finish the day at a local doughnut shop, where our unexpected visit leaves the ladies behind the counter both delighted and slightly bemused. It’s the final day of the shakedown cruise on my new yacht, and we sail back toward Ocean Marina after a few incredible days out on the water. The boat has been amazing, the dogs have loved it, and this was supposed to be the simple final leg back to the marina. But once we got back, everything changed. I had a major health scare and ended up going to the hospital. At this point, we still don’t know exactly what’s going on, but the doctors are looking at some very serious possibilities, including pancreatitis or cancer. Step aboard Black Rose, the very last Balance 526 ever built, anchored in the turquoise water off Clifton in Cape Town. This is a boat with a story in every detail. Her striking exterior wrap turns heads in any anchorage, while her interior was dreamed up by Studio Vara in California and brought to life by our team at Balance Catamarans St. Francis. But leaving the boatyard proved more difficult than expected. Strong winds battered the Queensland coast for more than a week, preventing us from even hoisting our genoa before departure. When a weather window finally arrived, we slipped our lines and began the next chapter of our Australian cruising season. In this episode, we navigate the remarkable Great Sandy Strait not once, but twice. Heading south, we carefully work our way through the shallow waterways before experiencing one of every sailor’s least favourite sensations — touching the bottom. Later, we successfully enter the narrow and shallow waters of Garry’s Anchorage, where Adam makes a solo trip ashore despite concerns about what might be waiting in the bush. Dingoes. Snakes. Insects. Sharks. And perhaps even the possibility of a saltwater crocodile. After regrouping, we turn north again, carefully timing our passage across the Sheridan Flats before anchoring at Kingfisher Bay. There, we begin preparing for an unforgettable adventure ashore that we’ll share in the next episode. We're less than a week away from picking up the kids, and one thing was on our minds: filling the freezer. As we worked our way along Alaska's remote outer coast, we started spotting black bears feeding on the spring greens. After checking regulations, passing on opportunities that didn't feel right, and spending hours glassing beaches and grassy flats, Scott finally got his chance. For us, hunting has never been about trophies. It's about providing healthy food for the family, respecting the animals that sustain us, and staying connected to the wild places we call home. This spring black bear will become burger, sausage, roasts, and countless meals shared around the table with our kids this summer.
