In this episode we get to hitch a ride on one of the World's most amazing boat lifts: The Ronquieres Inclined Plane! 🔔 CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ➜ https://www.sailingbritaly.com/subscribe ⛵ Join our Patreon Crew here! ➜ https://www.patreon.com/SailingBritaly The Ronquieres Inclined Plane is a ship lift / boat lift / boat elevator on the Brussels - Charleroi Canal. It has a length of 1,432 metres and lifts boats through 67.73 metres vertically. It consists of two large caissons mounted on rails. Each caisson has a water depth between 3 and 3.70 metres. It can carry one boat of 1,350 tonnes or many smaller boats within the same limits. Each caisson has a 5,200-tonne counterweight running in the trough below the rails. It takes 50 minutes in total to pass through the 1,800 metres of the entire structure, including the raised canal bridge at the top end. We were astounded by the scale and ingenuity of this innovative structure. This video goes into quite a lot of detail regarding the engineering behind this ship lift, and has been created with the intention of answering many of the questions a viewer may have about the Ronquieres Boat Lift. It took over 60 hours of my time (Chris) to edit this one video! We would like to say a huge thank you to our Patreon Crew, who have been so instrumental in motivating us to keep spending so much time creating our videos over the years. This episode discusses proper placement of a sailboat's jib cars on the jib car track and how to find the neutral starting position or "baseline" placement of the cars along the track for your particular sails. Finding the baseline position involves measuring the luff of the sail to find the mid-point and then drawing a line from there, through the clew, and locating the intersecting point along the jib car track. This "baseline" position is the theoretical position where the jib car should be placed in ideal conditions (neither overpowered nor underpowered) and smooth water. It may be different for each sail in your inventory. I also discuss the adjustment of the jib cars based on different sailing conditions. Moving the cars fore and aft changes the angle of force applied to the clew of the headsail. Moving the car aft increases the horizontal force (more pressure on the foot) while decreasing the vertical force (less pressure on the leech). Moving the car forward does the opposite, decreasing the horizontal force on the clew and increasing the vertical force. Generally, for heavier wind the jib cars are moved aft to flatten (de-power) the foot (bottom third) of the headsail and decrease leech tension which increases twist and reduces heeling force. For light air sailing, jib cars can be moved forward to increase the chamber or "belly" in the sail which will provide more power. More belly in the headsail can also used to increase power when dealing with waves and chop.
► We discovered this sporty powercat at Miami back in February... For its European debut, the Aquila 42 is bringing something new to the table with a powerful 2 x 440 HP Volvo drivetrain. During our test in the Gulf of Fréjus in the South of France, we exceeded 40 knots. The standard foils are particularly effective between 20 and 30 knots, reducing fuel consumption while increasing sailing comfort. The IPS system makes handling incredibly easy and allows you to hold the powercat “fast”, which is very useful when mooring. On the water, with its compact silhouette, the 42 Coupe is positioned from the outset in the category of sports powercats. The design seeks to be rather modern and relatively discreet, but also in line with American standards: the bows retain a steep “conventional” slope. On board, you can count on spacious relaxation areas. In the nacelle, there's a lounge, a large galley and a well-protected two-seater interior helm station. Multiple openings, including a forward door and a sunroof, facilitate circulation and ventilation. Each hull features a double cabin (the one to port being slightly larger) with private bathroom. Note: the 42 Coupe is equipped with a foiling system that reduces fuel consumption while increasing comfort under way. ► Technical specifications: Builder: Aquila Power Catamarans Overall length: 42’3” (12.88 m) Beam: 15’11” (4.85 m) Draft: 3’3” (0.98 m) Air draft: 10’3” (3.13 m) Light displacement: 18,740 lbs (8.5 t) Engines: 2 x 440 HP inboards Fuel 410 US gal (1,552 l) CE Category: B 12, C20, D29 ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests!
