Ficamos presos em Carneiros, em Pernambuco! ⛵ Entramos com a maré de lua, que proporcionava profundidade suficiente para o nosso veleiro Cabana, mas, quando a maré baixou, percebemos que não tínhamos profundidade para sair com segurança, considerando o nosso calado de 1,95 m. E agora? Só nos restava esperar a próxima mudança da lua! 😂 Enquanto o Cabana aguardava a maré certa, aproveitamos tudo o que esse paraíso do litoral pernambucano tem a oferecer: piscinas naturais, praias incríveis, passeios pelos bancos de areia e nossas cachorras correndo livres pelas ilhazinhas que aparecem na maré baixa. Também rolou churrasco a bordo de um catamarã com amigos, muita praia e momentos especiais da nossa vida a bordo. Mas nem tudo foi tranquilidade: mostramos também o incidente com outro veleiro que começou a garrar durante a ancoragem. Quando a profundidade finalmente melhorou, chegou a hora de deixar Carneiros para trás. Só que a saída ainda exigiu atenção, porque a maré continuava baixa! E a aventura não terminou por aí. Of course, what we thought would be a few simple jobs quickly turned into days of unexpected challenges, problem-solving, and a whole lot of patience. During the 1996 Vendée Globe, solo sailor Pete Goss turned back into a Southern Ocean storm to save a fellow competitor. French sailor Raphaël Dinelli’s yacht was sinking southwest of Australia. Goss battled upwind for two days, eventually reaching Dinelli in a liferaft and bringing him aboard Aqua Quorum. Both men survived. Their rescue became one of offshore sailing’s most extraordinary stories - and the beginning of a lasting friendship.

Après des mois de travaux, de matériel stocké un peu partout et de choses accumulées à bord, on attaque un grand tri sur le catamaran. On range, on trie, on jette ce qui ne sert plus, on remet de l’ordre dans les coffres et on commence aussi à améliorer petit à petit le confort à bord. Ce ne sont pas forcément les travaux les plus spectaculaires, mais c’est une étape indispensable avant de pouvoir réellement profiter du bateau et reprendre la mer dans de bonnes conditions. We’re back at what many consider the sailing event of the year, the Annapolis Fall Sailboat Show. This year, our mission was simple: reconnect with friends, enjoy the countless gatherings and parties, and hopefully stumble across a bargain or two. The Annapolis Harbor Construction and City Dock Resiliency & Revitalization Project continues to dominate the waterfront. Ongoing construction has consumed much of the space traditionally occupied by vendor tents. The project's stated goal is flood prevention by holding back the tides. As the bureaucrats call it, "resiliency." As sailors call it, "good luck with that." While Toni and I didn’t come home with any spectacular boat show deals, we more than made up for it in other ways. We spent time with old friends, met new members of the Seawind family, explored the latest boating innovations, and made the rounds at a variety of boat show parties. We first visited the Indonesian Island of Belitung way back in 2011 crewing on the ketch Atlantia at the start of our cruising lives. We found the natural beauty of the island truly amazing and the local people so amazingly friendly and helpful it really made our stay unforgettable. Despite being a well known holiday hotspot amongst Indonesians, the island wasn’t crowded in the least and back then, we saw very few western tourists at all. We had concerns Belitung may have been DISCOVERED and subsequently spoiled by crowds and over commercialism like Bali, Labuan Bajo and Komodo But after over thirty thousand nautical miles sailed and all these years later, we were delighted to find that wasn’t the case at all, with the Belitung’s relaxed atmosphere and slow pace of life wrapping around us from the time we stepped on the beach.

Most of the time, it's just the two of us aboard Te Tāiko, but as we continue sailing north along Queensland coast, we're enjoying some company. Brian, Adam's dad, has joined us aboard, and we've been buddy boating with our friends Megan and Al aboard SV Vela. In this episode, we explore the southern Whitsunday Islands, beginning with Brampton Island, where we discover the remains of an abandoned island resort, walk through native forest, encounter some of Australia's wildlife and enjoy beautiful views across the surrounding islands. From Brampton, we continue sailing north to Thomas island and Cid Harbour on Whitsunday Island, experiencing both the beauty and the occasional discomfort of life at anchor. It's been lovely having family aboard and sharing some of our cruising experiences with friends as we explore this beautiful part of Queensland. Haze from forest fires in southern Papua prevented us from following our planned South Raja Ampat itinerary. We had no idea a bull shark might actually bite a moving dinghy until one did it right beside the anchorage we were heading for. We stop at Staniel Cay to top up the fuel, where we spend about an hour waiting for a centre console to take on roughly 600 gallons. Then a big catamaran heads in ahead of us. By comparison, we’re at the dock for only 15 or 20 minutes, taking on 30 gallons of diesel per side and some gasoline for the generator and dinghy. With the tanks topped up, we continue to Big Majors. That’s when we hear about an 8–10 foot bull shark biting a RIB while it was running through the cut between Big Majors and Fowl Cay. The people aboard had to be rescued by the resort on Fowl Cay. We’ve spent a lot of time in dinghies around the Bahamas. It had honestly never occurred to us that a shark might bite one while it was moving. New fear unlocked. So when it’s time to dive the anchor, Captain Dave comes down with me. The water is murkier than I’d like, visibility is poor, and knowing what happened just around the corner is not especially comforting. We also head back to Staniel Cay for provisions, which leads to one of those very boat-specific jobs that looks nothing like unloading groceries at home. Every bag has to be broken down, reorganized, and squeezed into whatever space we can find aboard Dark Angel.
