THE DRAMATIC YOUTUBE DESCRIPTION SAYS - Sailing to the Banggai Islands in Sulawesi, Indonesia, we’re stranded at sea in the dark with a broken engine, almost run into a huge fishing platform, survive a near miss with a speeding fishing boat, find water flooding into our yacht, suffer expensive gear failure and, after finally making it into port, we get robbed? Nah forget that! THE DREAMTIME SAIL DESCRIPTION SAYS, - It’s a boat and things happen sometimes. No big deal. So ride along with us on our very, very chilled night passage to brilliantly, beautiful Banggai Island. There’s even dolphins. It’s cool. After eleven unforgettable days exploring the remote beauty of Indonesia’s Sombori Islands—home to crystal-clear lagoons, hidden lakes, limestone caves, and pristine white sand beaches—we continue our sailing adventure northward on our circumnavigation of Sulawesi. But before leaving this tropical paradise behind, Karen convinces us to make one final stop at a breathtaking sea cave, and overcomes her fear of hitting the reef to capture stunning footage of the cave itself with our classic ketch, "Our Dreamtime". Join us as we sail through this rarely visited corner of Southeast Asia, sharing the raw beauty, hidden gems, and sailing lifestyle that define off-the-beaten-path cruising in Indonesia. Continuing our circumnavigation of Sulawesi, we sailed from Pulau Labengke hoping to find an anchorage in the Sambori area to spend a couple of nights. What we discovered were spectacular lagoons, vibrant coral reefs, powder sand beaches, stunning limestone caves and the surreal experience of swimming in a land locked lagoon inhabited by thousands of graceful jellyfish with no sting venom after centuries of evolution. Blown away by nothing short of sheer awesomeness, we ended up staying ten days safely anchored in calm waters off the rustic Sombori Resort having one of our most amazing Indonesian experiences of all. Anchored off the south East coast of Sulawesi in a stunning, fiord like bay on the island of Labengke we explore an unspoilt, ecological paradise with mountainous coastline, clothed in thick rain forest, filled with hornbills, kingfishers and scores of other exotic bird species, lapped by crystal clear waters covering beautiful coral reefs, heart shaped bays, blue, blue lagoons, very, very few people and no tourists. We feel so privileged to sail here on Our Dreamtime and experience such pristine natural beauty. If Nirvana exists, this is what it looks like. But this fragile treasure lays across a thin strip of water from death and destruction reigning down on the Sulawesi mainland in the form of unfettered nickel mining, stripping the jungle of all vegetation, laying the hills bare and covered red dust or mud silting the waters with red sediment wiping out all marine life. Could this fate also face unspoilt, pristine Pulau Labengke? The fears of the local people and survey pegs we found throughout the island suggest Yes!

Sail with us aboard Our Dreamtime to the island of Pulau Labengke, a remote ecological paradise off the southeast coast of Sulawesi, Indonesia, where crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, heart-shaped bays, and lush rainforests teeming with hornbills, kingfishers, and other exotic bird species await. In this sailing adventure, we explore a pristine, unspoilt island that feels like the very definition of Nirvana—but its future is under threat. Just across the narrow strait, aggressive nickel mining is devastating the Sulawesi mainland, stripping away jungle, leaving barren red hills, and polluting once-thriving marine ecosystems with choking red sediment. Fears expressed by locals and disturbing signs such as survey pegs on Labengke suggest this paradise may soon face the same destructive fate. Join us as we anchor in a stunning fjord-like bay, share our firsthand experience of this natural wonder, and raise awareness of the environmental risks posed by unchecked mining activity in Southeast Asia’s most beautiful and fragile sailing destinations. Leaving Kendari, Sulawesi our sail boat was rammed by an Indonesian Customs Boat. What did we do wrong? Nothing apparently. We had reluctantly gone to the city of Kendari to get fuel after not finding any diesel available at our previous stop on Pulau Wowoni. Other cruisers had reported experiences of over officious officials and low level corruption in the South East Sulawesi capital which was more than enough to make us wary, particular as it was the polar opposite of our own previous dealings with Indonesian officials which had all been very friendly and courteous. This episode tells the story of our own Kendari experience before sailing on to the amazing Pulau Labenke. Sailing around the remote Indonesian island of Sulawesi, we rely on satellite imagery to find stunning, safe anchorages. In this episode we do just that with our buddy boaters at an amazing beach where the dense, tropical jungle cascades down the mountainous coast to meet powder white sand, fringed by vivid corals in crystal clear water. We get fresh squid off friendly, local fisherman and simply delight in the natural beauty of this unspoilt wilderness. For ocean travellers like us, Indonesia is certainly a nation of wonders. We’re in for a surprise when we wake in the morning to leave Excelsior Cove. The boat is aground so we’re stuck and not going anywhere for a while. When the tide eventually lifts Our Dreamtime off the seabed, we sail over calm seas to anchor at the town of Raha, Sulawesi in search of ancient civilisation. Here, hidden amongst the rain forest in the limestone hills of Muna Island, Liangkabori Caves hold a remarkable secret — vivid rock art created three and half to four thousand years ago. Scrambling through narrow into chambers deep underground, we discover ancient paintings, etched and painted in red ochre, depict human figures, animals, and mysterious geometric shapes. As archaeologists continue to study the site, the art reveals a deep cultural connection between past and present, with local traditions still echoing the symbols and stories found on the cave walls. THIS is why we go sailing. To be all alone and at one with nature in amazing anchorages like the one featured here. Floating calmly in warm, crystal-clear waters above pure white sands, brilliant corals and abundant sea life while surrounded by amazing rock formations and lush, tropical jungle with the air filled by birdsong. We spent days swimming naked, kayaking and exploring tunnels leading to hidden lagoons full of wonder. If this place, hidden away in the Buton Strait of Indonesia isn’t Nature’s Playground we don’t know what is. It was simply our most stunning anchorage EVER! In this eye-opening episode, we sail from Lasusua to Tepeo through a remote and rarely visited stretch of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Here we anchor beside shocking environmental destruction caused by unregulated nickel mining. As we navigate these little-known waters, we uncover widespread damage to the rainforest and marine ecosystems, offering a raw and unfiltered look at the environmental cost hidden behind remote beauty. This episode is a must-watch for sailing enthusiasts, travellers exploring South East Asia, and anyone concerned about the impact of industrial activity on fragile natural environments. Join us as we document this powerful journey and raise awareness about the urgent need for environmental protection in one of Indonesia’s most remote coastal regions. During our first three weeks sailing the coast of Sulawesi we met many, many beautiful, welcoming people and saw nothing but the unbelievable beauty of Sulawesi, the world’s eleventh largest island, but this stop was truly distressing. In this episode we sail, we motor sail and we get stuck with our anchor wrapped up in an old net in the harbour at Tanjung Siwa. Don’t worry, we’ll show you a very quick and easy way to untangle a fouled anchor. After sailing in Greece we have plenty of experience. Then we motor sail again and, finally, we reach our northern destination of Polopo. We’re sailing with friends Daniel and Emma on our buddy boat Lola B in an area of the huge Indonesian Island of Sulawesi very rarely visited by cruising boats. We’ve only scratched the surface so far but we’re already in love with this amazing area. Please ride along with us. We sail to a complex of reefs in remote Sulawesi, Indonesia and discover a great anchorage at a tiny island. Here we are enthusiastically welcomed by the villagers, who tell us we are the very first westerners ever to visit their stunning home. They proudly showed us around their small but truly beautiful island where seaweed farming and fishing are the central way of life. After an all to short stay, we sail further north to Bojowe Harbour on the Sulawesi mainland where we race to anchor before a fierce monsoonal storm that strikes with big winds and driving rain. Did we make it? Let’s call it a draw. We have just begun our exploration of this, the world’s 11th largest island but already we have fallen in love with sailing this remote area populated by such warm, welcoming people. After sailing to Bira on the Indonesian Island of Sulawesi, we explore the world of the Bugis people, once fearsome pirates and the origin of bogeyman myths, now famous worldwide for their amazing skills handcrafting massive traditional wooden ships The Bugis are the predominate ethnic group on southern peninsula of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi and are one of the most skilled and well known sea-faring people in Southeast Asia. Back in the Seventeen Hundreds the scary bogeyman was no myth but very, very real murdering plundering, pillaging pirates creating havoc along the spice routes plied by ships of the Dutch and English colonial companies. “Beware of the bogeyman” was a phrase used to motivate sailors of these colonial traders to be watchful and ever alert. These bogeymen, the Bugis, weren’t imaginary ghosts but rather a very real, dangerous threat to ship and crew. The modern day Bugis are no longer fearsome pirates but are still master mariners and skilled ship builders almost totally responsible for Indonesia having the largest fleet of timber cargo ships in the world. In addition to that, there is now an also impressive fleet of traditionally constructed timber sail and motor boats catering for the exploding adventure tourism and live aboard dive markets. Visiting this hub of traditional wooden ship building had been on our bucket list for a very long time and fully lived up to our anticipation.

There’s a first time for everything and before stopping at Pulau Sabalana on our way to Sulawesi, we’d never been chased out of an anchorage with explosives before. When the locals started throwing sticks of dynamite around the boat we got out of there as fast as we could. Fortunately we avoided being blown up and reached our landfall at the port of Bira safely after another comfortable night passage that saw Our Dreamtime sailing beautifully averaging over six knots in the mild conditions. Let the Sulawesi exploring begin.
