Sailing off the coast of Borneo on a windswept, moonless night, a strange boat crosses our bow then does a u-turn onto a course to intercept us. We turn away and they turn with us. We start our engine to speed up and they increase speed as well. In daylight hours, we’ve got used to curious fisherman angling in towards us to have a closer look at our boat, wave and shout friendly greetings across the water, but tonight in the darkness, this was different. This boat was on an actual collision course. Were they dangerous brigands or just more curious fishermen? We had no way of knowing and could not take any risks so squeezed every ounce of speed out of our 42 year old yacht she could muster. It was touch and go for quite a while before we gained enough of a lead that our mystery pursuers gave up the chase and turned away. After sailing across Indonesia’s Makassar Strait from Sulawesi, we anchored of a wildly welcoming village in the Kalimantan region of Borneo keen to explore the region around the river city of Banjarmasin. We really enjoyed experiencing a number of “must sees” on our list including Indonesia’s last remaining floating markets and the textile district with its unique Sasirangan traditional resistance-dyed fabrics. But what we discovered on the alluvial plains outside the city truly shocked us. Men chest deep in muddy water at the bottom of deep pits hand dredging gravel searching of diamonds in much the same, extremely dangerous, manner as their forebears had done for for over a thousand years despite a truly horrifying and still climbing death toll. Island hopping to Borneo, we visit another super friendly, but very remote village. Located in the middle of the Makassar Strait, Labuan Barat on Pulau Matsirih is so remote, the villagers told us we were the very first yachts ever to stop here. Our arrival causes mayhem amongst the excited school children and provides another chance for us to present some gifts for their school. Then we push on with our final overnight sail to Kalimantan, Borneo but run into a maze of fishing boats, squid platforms, tugs towing huge barges on long cables and busy shipping traffic, all combining to giving us a night of near misses playing “dodge ems” around numerous ships, fishing boats, squid platform, tugs towing huge barges and very narrowly avoiding a collision by as little as 120 metres. The absolute highlight of our time in Makassar and, in fact, one of the most memorable locations we’ve seen in Indonesia was our visit to the amazing valley of Ramang Ramang with its stunning rock formations, waterways, limestone caves and towering mountains on all sides. Our day trip also included the Leang Leang archeoligical park with cave art dated to be many thousands of years old. We anchored our sail boat off Losari Beach in the centre of the action for the F8 Festival Airshow in the Indonesian City of Makassar. The Navy arrived first. Then the Air Force made a dramatic entrance overhead. Our Dreamtime appeared to be the epicentre of the fighter jets attention as they made pass after pass over our masts. Then the paratroopers dropped in for a visit complete with a huge Indonesian flag. They all landed safely ashore so the rescue boats had an easy afternoon. The jets made their farewell pass, the navy headed home and we enjoyed another stunning sunset before going ashore to join the party. We discovered Makassar's Paotere Harbour packed with traditional timber vessels that provide so much of the country’s commercial transport. Indonesia boasts the world's largest fleet of timber ships carrying all sorts of goods between it’s seventeen thousand islands. Strolling these docks, our minds were easily transported back centuries to a time before huge cranes lifting containers to when all freight was loaded by hand on the backs of men. After a hundred and forty days exploring the remarkable island of Sulawesi, we found ourselves anchored in a totally protected harbour at our final stop, Makassar, the closest city to the geographical centre of Indonesia.
