Koh Phangan is famous for its parties, but there’s so much more to this island. We spend the day cruising the coastline, finding secluded spots and taking in some of the best scenery we’ve seen in Thailand. Brutal - The word crews have been using to describe the opening stages of the Ocean Race Atlantic. The upwind start was uncomfortable enough but then the fleet engaged with a weather system that looked capable of carrying them across the Atlantic. The catch? Sailing close to the trailing edge of a cold front, where strong breeze promises speed — but the wind direction and sea state don’t align. Most had the pace to stay with the system but few had the speed to break through the front into a more organised sea state where they could properly put their foot to the floor. I tried fly fishing for Chinook salmon on Vancouver Island — and quickly discovered I had a lot to learn. Here’s to visiting fascinating places! I headed up-island to Nile Creek Fly Shop, where the owner, and my friend, Courtney, gave me a crash course in targeting Chinook on a fly rod: reading the river, choosing the right setup, presenting the fly, and understanding what these powerful fish are doing as they push upstream. Armed with a new Vision Coast 8-weight fly rod, I climbed back into Bluey, my 1981 VW Westfalia, found a place to camp beside the river, and went fishing. The salmon run was incredible. Chinook were charging through the shallows, fighting their way upstream — sometimes literally crashing onto the bank. And once I started figuring things out, I began hooking fish. Landing them was another matter. This episode is part fishing lesson, part road trip, and part first attempt at something I've wanted to learn for a long time. Vortec Marine in Swanwick, UK, invited us to test hull no.9 of this Bill Dixon-designed bluewater cruiser, which has been in production since 2020 at Queen Long Marine in Taiwan. Bill Dixon started working with Hylas in 2017, and his first design for them, the Hylas 48, was launched in 2018. Hylas is a semi-custom brand that has developed a reputation for liveaboard comfort, reliable ocean-going credentials, and good value compared to its competitors, thanks to lower labour costs (though no less skilled) in Taiwan. The roll over of a Spirit hull is a milestone moment in the build process. Once the hull has been built by our talented team, it is moved outside the yard to allow it to be rolled 180 degrees by two cranes. Suspended in mid-air in two slings, the wooden hull is slowly turned over, with careful supervision from the yacht's build team. 🌊 7 Beaufort mit einer 3,94-Meter-Jolle – das kann nicht immer gutgehen… 😅 Bei unserem Törn mit der Topaz Magno auf der Ostsee wurden aus sportlichem Segeln schnell jede Menge Kenterungen. Starker, böiger Wind, bis zu ca. 1,5 Meter Welle und eine kleine Gleitjolle mit zwei Erwachsenen an Bord. Mehrfach konnten wir die Magno wieder aufrichten – manchmal kenterte sie direkt danach wieder.
