In this episode, I discuss how I planned my course to sail solo from La Cruz De Huanacaxtle / Banderas Bay, Mexico to Nuku Hiva, Marquesas, French Polynesia. This was a 3000+ nautical mile passage which involved trying to understand and time departure from Banderas Bay based on the El Norte Winds coming down the Sea of Cortez, avoiding strong winds which cycle around Cabo Corrientes, heading West to the Mexican archipelago islands of Socorro/Clarion, positioning towards the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone to find the ideal location to cross the equator, and final routing to Nuku Hiva. Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon. An EPIRB is a distress unit you activate when human life is in jeopardy. It transmits a specific 15-character ID (Hex ID) that cross-references a database, and with built-in GPS it sends your lat/long so rescuers know exactly where to look. EPIRBs can be sold with or without AIS transmission—and AIS is strongly recommended, because then not only rescue personnel know where you are, but boats in the vicinity can see your AIS signal on their display. We also cover how EPIRBs sit in brackets so they don’t accidentally activate, how they can be activated manually or by water activation, and the difference between Category 2 (manual deployment) and Category 1 (float-free) EPIRBs. Finally, we cover the lanyard: tie it to a life raft, ditch bag, or your wrist—but don’t tie it to the vessel, because if it’s underwater it won’t transmit. Skipper Kevin Holmberg and his teammates on Fawkes won the Sonar Midwinter Championship at the 2026 Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series in St. Petersburg, earning them a Caribbean Championship Challenger berth in the BVIs, a regatta raced in November with Sunsail charterboats.

Rooster have been a staple of the dinghy scene since 1999, and have attended the Dinghy Show every year since 2001. This was the 25th time they'd physically exhibited (the 2021 show was virtual), so Mark Jardine chatted with Steve Cockerill to find out about the journey, and the newly-updated iconic Aquafleece which was launched at the 2026 show. We have some lovely warm air this week so out comes the fibreglass and all those little niggling repairs I want to do get done. We start with the lockers and sealking thse up, or at least one of them. We also sand down and look at the cracks on the cabin top and fill loads of holes and cracks up with epoxy.
