A cinquant'anni il fisico ti chiede il conto, la fatica si fa sentire, eppure siamo qui. In questo video vi porto dentro il Navajo, la mia barca a vela di 10.70 metri, completamente scheletrizzata. Nonostante il caldo infernale e le macerie, io e mia moglie Serena siamo saliti a bordo per progettare la nostra svolta, immaginando il futuro di questa barca tra un sorriso e una goccia di sudore. Ma il mare non è solo sogni. La realtà del cantiere sa essere spietata. Mentre rientravo dalla Sardegna guardando i bambini sui corsi di vela, sapevo già cosa mi aspettava: un muro di solitudine. Ho un motore entrobordo da sollevare, una perdita d'olio da trovare prima del viaggio in Adriatico, e mi hanno lasciato solo. Gli amici sono impegnati, e trovare un meccanico nautico in zona è diventato un incubo commerciale: preferiscono tutti i grandi fuoribordo, nessuno vuole perdere tempo con il motore di una barca a vela. Una follia di due giorni racchiusa in un soffio, tra la polvere del cantiere e la fuga finale alla Sagra del Pesce di Chioggia per non impazzire, passando per i ricordi all'Idroscalo dove tutto è iniziato. We were the only sailboat anchored off the beautiful coastal town of Hua Hin, Thailand, and it felt like we had the entire place to ourselves. We took the dinghy to the beach, then headed up the mountain to explore an incredible Buddhist temple with amazing views over the coastline. There were monkeys everywhere, beautiful architecture, and some of the best scenery we have seen in Thailand. Afterward, we stopped for lunch at a beachfront restaurant before heading back into town that evening to explore the Hua Hin night market. We ate dinner, did some shopping, and finished the night watching a live band play. This was one of those perfect cruising days—beautiful scenery, great food, local culture, and an anchorage all to ourselves. Leaving the calm of the Casamance River was the easy part. Getting Galopin safely to Dakar with a torn Genoa and a "toy" storm sail was a different story. In this episode: •The Bar: Navigating the treacherous mouth of the Casamance. With only 5 meters of depth miles offshore, the breaking waves were a constant threat to capsize us. •The "Toy" Sail: My big Genoa is gone. I’m crossing open water with a used main and a tiny storm sail. No motor noise, no vibration, and no fear of a tangled prop. Surprisingly, Galopin found his stride, giving us 6 hours of pure, silent sailing bliss. •The Invisible Minefield: Darkness brings a new set of obstacles. Fishing buoys and nets are everywhere, and catching a line in the prop means diving under the hull in the dark—something I desperately wanted to avoid. •The Laser Game: Out of the dark, a green laser tagged my sails. Then, six massive spotlights blinded me. Fishermen guarding their nets or a phantom Coast Guard? I had to steer off-course and hope they wouldn't follow. •Surreal Beauty: Despite the stress, the ocean provided a light show. The hull was cutting through clouds of blue bioluminescence, a spellbinding sight that video never quite captures perfectly. •The Cat Nap: Sleep is a luxury you can't afford. My night was a cycle of 20-minute alarms—wake up, check the AIS, scan the horizon for unlit boats, and repeat. •Night Terrors: The Gambian coast is a minefield of fishing nets and unlit buoys. Just as the bioluminescence began its surreal light show, I was targeted by green lasers and strobe lights. Was it fishermen protecting their nets, or the Coast Guard? •The Race: A 20-minute cat-nap cycle and a race against a closing weather window. This week definitely wasn’t part of the plan. What was meant to be a quick stop in Guernsey turned into an unexpected haul out after we discovered my rig had been installed incorrectly. While the boat was out of the water, we found a few more issues, including a crack around the keel (thankfully only cosmetic), a leaking valve, and several rigging problems that needed immediate attention. The good news? The Hydrovane is now installed, the keel has been checked and resealed, the leaking valve is fixed, and we’re making great progress on rebuilding the rig properly. It wasn’t the week I expected, but it might just have been the week that saved my race.
