Anthony Bell launched his new charity campaign raising funds for the Loyal Foundation at Woolwich Dock. Guests included John Bertrand, Layne Beachley, and Larry Emdur. Olympic gold medallist Tom Slingsby will be the sailing captain and two of the celebrity sailors for this year will be Anthony Minichiello and Phil Waugh.

We were invited for showers at the Fishguard Bay Yacht Club. Unfortunately the timing meant a dinghy ride across the exposed harbour in a fairly strong Northerly wind and a falling tide. As we turned in we had one wave that came close to tipping us over and then I turned and we started surfing. One wave broke just as it reached us and quite a lot of water came in over the stern. Once we made it in we were rather shaken, wondering how we would manage to get out through the surf. In the end we realised that if we waited 4 hours the tide would be coming in and deep enough that we could sneak out around the harbour wall with the breakers further into the harbour. So we went for a long walk, coffee and some food shopping. The trip back was much less eventful. Il Fountaine Pajot FP 48 è uno dei tre modelli presentati quest’anno dal cantiere francese, insieme all’FP 55 e all’FPY 70. Tre catamarani molto interessanti, caratterizzati da una particolare cura dei dettagli, come da tradizione per Fountaine Pajot. Il cantiere ha recentemente cambiato CEO, ma il passaggio di consegne non sembra aver modificato la filosofia e l’impostazione che da sempre contraddistinguono il marchio. Two remarkable sailors. Two ambitious campaigns. One of the biggest challenges in offshore racing. The Route du Rhum is no ordinary race. Every four years, the French port of St Malo becomes the centre of the offshore sailing world as huge crowds gather to watch a fleet of solo skippers prepare to race 3,500 miles across the Atlantic to Guadeloupe. But behind the spectacle are the individual stories of the sailors who have spent years working towards this moment. In the first of our PlanetSail Route du Rhum 2026 previews, we catch up with Alexia Barrier and Francesca Clapcich, two impressive offshore racers whose determination, experience and ambition reveal just what it takes to mount a campaign for this legendary event. He has sailed his Tiwal 3 dinghy on inland waters and the Great Lakes for over a year. Having grown up sailing a Pintail with his dad, he loves this boat's hybrid windsurfer-sailboat feel, keeping him close to the water. He thrills at fast-paced solo sailing in 20-to-25-knot winds, yet the deck is roomy and comfortable enough to take friends or his kids out on the water. This portable sailboat is brilliantly designed for quick rigging. He can fully rig it from its stowage bags in just twenty minutes, transporting them securely on his roof rack for family vacations. For short local trips, he leaves it inflated in his truck bed, launching in just five minutes. He notes that one must adapt sometimes: he once capsized with his youngest son, and a jammed swivel cleat caused them to roll over six times. However, once the technique is learned, righting the hull is incredibly easy. Thanks to this vessel, he achieved his goal of sailing all five Great Lakes, a feat impossible with a traditional sailboat. His favorite passage was crossing the Straits of Mackinac to Mackinac Island, a spot normally reached only by ferry or plane. Recently, he even joined the Tiwal fleet in Japan to sail the Pacific Ocean. In Memory of John Ripard Snr (1929 – 2026) This tribute honours John Ripard Snr, Honorary President of the Royal Malta Yacht Club, Olympian and one of the founders of the Rolex Middle Sea Race. Together with his brother Paul, Jimmy White and Alan Green, John helped bring the Middle Sea Race to life in 1968. He skippered Josian to victory in that first edition and won again in 1970 aboard Tikka II. More than half a century later, the race he helped create draws sailors from across the world to Malta each October. His passion for the sea and his generous spirit inspired generations of Maltese sailors, and his legacy continues through the John Ripard Course Record Trophy and the many members of the Ripard family who still race today. How do you decide whether risk of collision exists — and what if you are not sure? COLREGs Rule 7 explained clause by clause: all available means, radar scanning and plotting, scanty information, and the compass bearing test, shown with true-to-scale animation from the bridge, on the radar and from above. Every give-way and stand-on rule applies only once risk of collision exists, so Rule 7 comes first. In this video we go through the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs / IRPCS) Rule 7 paragraph by paragraph: (a) using all available means — eyes, binoculars, compass bearings, radar, AIS and sound signals — and treating any doubt as risk; (b) proper use of radar, long-range scanning for early warning and radar plotting / ARPA; (c) why assumptions must not be made on scanty information; (d)(i) steady compass bearing with decreasing range, and why a relative bearing is not enough; (d)(ii) when risk exists even with an appreciable bearing change — very large vessels, tugs and tows, and close range. ⚠️ For general information and entertainment purposes only — not a substitute for the official COLREG text, approved training or professional advice. #COLREGs #Rule7 #Seamanship
