► Following its world premiere in the United States, the Aquila 45 Sport has finally crossed the Atlantic to make its European debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival. ► With its muscular SUV-inspired styling - according to the builder - and twin 600 hp Mercury Verado V12s, the flagship of the Sport range is hardly discreet. Its twin-step hull is claimed to reach more than 50 mph (43.5 knots), but it was at anchor that we were really able to appreciate the clever features of this large dayboat. ► Starting with the two hydraulic side terraces: once lowered, they increase the beam from 15' to 19'3" (4.57 to 5.88 m) and transform the cockpit into a genuine beach club. You can dive directly from the platforms or simply place a beanbag there and enjoy the anchorage. Aft, a large electric awning slides out from the hardtop to protect the area from the sun; its rapid deployment also means it can be retracted quickly if the wind picks up. ► Forward, there is another clever idea: beneath the large bench seats are nearly 12.4 cu ft (350 l) of watertight storage, complemented by wet lockers dedicated to fenders and equally well suited to drinks or still-dripping swimming gear. The cockpit features two U-shaped bench seats that convert into a vast sunpad, while four seats face a particularly well-connected helm station. Below deck, a cabin with a large bed and private bathroom allows the program to extend beyond simple day boating. ► And some good news to finish? Es war still um uns geworden, während wir ein paar Wochen in Deutschland weilten. Im Vordergrund standen unsere Familien und die Erledigung etlicher Termine. Ein bisschen Urlaub aber hatten wir dann doch - bei unseren Freunden Maike und Kai-Uwe Eilts in Schleswig. Auf der Schlei konnten wir erstmals den von Kai-Uwe gebauten Flitzer fahren: die Ilensee 16, einen Daycruiser aus Mahagoni, den das Boote Magazin im Test als "Schmuckstück von der Schlei" bezeichnete. Kurz vor der Ankunft der Ausläufer von Tropensturm Dolly, flogen Miço und ich zurück in die Dominikanische Republik. Und der Empfang auf der Dilly-Dally glich einem Feuerwerk.

► It took four years of development for the Whisper project to finally become a reality. Presented as a world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival, hull #1 even grew along the way: initially designed as a 50-footer, the powercat gained extra length at the aft platform at the request of its Owner and now measures 52 feet… before growing to 54 feet for future units. ► On board, it is undoubtedly the main living area that makes the greatest impression. The vast aft cockpit can remain completely open or be enclosed thanks to large sliding side windows and, above all, an aft window that raises electrically. Once everything is closed, the cockpit, U-shaped galley and immense saloon form a single interior space, while retaining the dining table aft. It is a particularly convincing layout and partly explains the feeling of volume offered by the main deck. Wood, marble, leather and linen also contribute to the luxurious atmosphere. ► Outside, the large hydraulic platform serves as both a swim platform and tender support, while a forward cockpit and immense flybridge provide multiple relaxation areas. The latter seems almost oversized for a 52-foot catamaran; however, we found access to it a little steep, while its layout still slightly encroaches on the Owner’s cabin: two points that could evolve. For propulsion, the Whisper uses two 100 kW electric motors powered by 240 kWh of batteries. Two 35 kW generators take over for longer passages. To reach Cannes from Fano, Italy, the 52 reportedly sailed for twelve days at an average speed of around 7 knots, consuming approximately 106 US gal (400 l) of fuel. ►► Unveiled as a world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival, the Aquila 35 Sport joins the new Sport range as the American builder’s smallest model. ►Replacing the 36 Sport, this 35'6" (10.82 m) powercat adopts the muscular styling of the 45 Sport and its twin-step hull. Its 14'9" (4.5 m) beam still allows for three separate social areas: a forward lounge, helm station and spacious aft cockpit. ►The latter incorporates some of the cleverest features. The entire U-shaped bench seat slides electrically from port to starboard, either opening up a wide passageway or limiting access to just one side – practical with young children. Its adjustable backrest can also be used to create a huge sunpad, perfect for a nap or some well-earned rest after drinks! A wet bar and galley unit complete the setup. ►Forward, the lounge accommodates four people, with small cushions positioned along the sides to provide comfortable back support. The same attention to detail can be found at the helm station, with four seats featuring flip-up bolsters and a proper footrest. Below deck, a cabin with a king-size bed and separate bathroom makes it possible to spend a few nights aboard. An optional lithium battery pack notably allows the air conditioning to be used at anchor. ►The twin-step hull comes with twin 300 hp Mercury Verado V8s as standard or optional twin 400 hp Mercury Verado V10s. Aquila claims a top speed of 39 to 45 knots and a cruising speed of 25 to 34 knots. My hardtop project update covers the final stages of the build. See the completed fiberglass work and the new electrical panel installation. The fiberglass work is finally finished, marking a major milestone for this custom build. I have wrapped up all the necessary design changes and error corrections that caused recent delays, ensuring the structure is solid before moving forward. Installing a custom hardtop requires patience, but seeing these components come together makes the extra time worth it. Getting the electrical panel set up properly is a critical step to ensure the electronics function reliably once the hardtop is completed. Sailing off the coast of Borneo on a windswept, moonless night, a strange boat crosses our bow then does a u-turn onto a course to intercept us. We turn away and they turn with us. We start our engine to speed up and they increase speed as well. In daylight hours, we’ve got used to curious fisherman angling in towards us to have a closer look at our boat, wave and shout friendly greetings across the water, but tonight in the darkness, this was different. This boat was on an actual collision course. Were they dangerous brigands or just more curious fishermen? We had no way of knowing and could not take any risks so squeezed every ounce of speed out of our 42 year old yacht she could muster. It was touch and go for quite a while before we gained enough of a lead that our mystery pursuers gave up the chase and turned away. 7 Beaufort, bis zu 1,5 Meter Welle und zwei Erwachsene auf einer gerade einmal 3,94 Meter langen Topaz Magno. Was als sportlicher Segeltörn vor Kiel-Schilksee auf der Ostsee beginnt, wird für uns schnell zum echten Grenzgang. Auf Raumwindkurs macht die kleine Jolle zunächst richtig Spaß: Sie geht in Gleitfahrt, flitzt über die Wellen und zeigt, wie viel Geschwindigkeit in so einem kleinen Boot steckt. Doch die Bedingungen sind für uns zunehmend anspruchsvoll. Heftige Böen erwischen uns, das Heck bricht bei mehreren Spinouts aus und wir landen immer wieder im Wasser. Nach zahlreichen Kenterungen wird das Aufrichten schließlich zum eigentlichen Problem. Selbst wenn wir die Jolle wieder aufgerichtet bekommen, drückt der starke Wind sie teilweise sofort wieder um. Die nasse Jolle ist schwer zu halten und das Einsteigen wird bei Wind und Welle immer schwieriger. Und dann wird es wirklich ernst. Wir geraten in eine Legerwall-Situation. Wind und Wellen drücken uns zunehmend in Richtung der Steinpackung. Wenn die Jolle dort auf die Steine getrieben wird, könnte das schnell zu erheblichen Schäden führen. Wir sind zu diesem Zeitpunkt ziemlich allein auf der Ostsee und müssen die Situation selbst lösen. Mit viel Gewichtstrimm, mehreren Versuchen und ordentlich körperlichem Einsatz schaffen wir es schließlich, die Jolle wieder unter Kontrolle zu bekommen. Die Fock wird eingerollt und wir konzentrieren uns nur noch darauf, sicher in die Hafeneinfahrt von Kiel-Schilksee zu kommen. Nach knapp zwei Stunden, mehr als 10 Kenterungen und einigen ziemlich kritischen Momenten erreichen wir schließlich wieder ruhigeres Wasser. In Episode 31 of UK Sailmakers' Lessons Learned, host Buttons Padin catches up with Tripp Brower, executive director of Apparent Winds, aboard the 75 foot aluminum ketch Resilience in Mo'orea, French Polynesia, just in from Fakarava in the Tuamotus. Tripp explains how Apparent Winds grew from a planned two year circumnavigation into a 10 year expedition focused on collecting and sharing stories of community led environmental and cultural preservation, and on making "affordable science" possible by offering researchers low cost access to a capable sailing platform and accessible tools like a 6,000 meter drop camera. He traces the route from Maine to Grenada, across the Caribbean to Panama, out through French Polynesia, the Cook Islands, Samoa and Tonga to New Zealand, and back north this season through the Marquesas and the Tuamotus, with relationship building as the foundation for the work. Tripp covers the partnership behind the 12.5 million square kilometre Moananui Sanctuary, a NOAA research charter in American Samoa this October focused on coral, and introduces the crew. He also gets into how the ketch rig is handled shorthanded, his passage making advice ("don't sink" and "leave the dock"), and what is next: a refit in Whangarei, New Zealand, and a separate Chile to Antarctica expedition. One year ago, we started living aboard Alaskan Gypsy full time in Alaska. At almost exactly the same time, we started sharing that life here on YouTube. We had no idea what either one would become. In our first year aboard our 80-foot steel schooner, we've worked to bring Gypsy back to life, spent an Alaska winter living aboard, found work in remote communities, tackled unusual rescue and repair projects, crossed the Gulf of Alaska, explored forgotten places and met some incredible people along the way. And somehow, we made 155 videos while doing it. For our one-year anniversary, we're looking back at 10 videos that defined our first year. These aren't necessarily our 10 biggest videos. They're the ones that changed something for us, surprised us, opened a new door or helped us understand what we want The Alaskan Gypsy Life to become. We go back to our first time aboard Gypsy and the months spent working on her in the Wrangell shipyard. Then Port Protection changed everything. We began figuring out how living and working from the boat could actually become a sustainable life, and some of the projects we stumbled into became stories we never could have planned. From a remote cabin rescue and a broken excavator to Alaska treasure hunting, crossing the Gulf of Alaska and meeting Nikki, who has lived aboard alone in Alaska for more than four decades, each of these videos represents a piece of what this life has become. Looking back, maybe that's the biggest thing we've discovered: we're not living our lives for YouTube. We're living this strange, beautiful Alaskan life and sharing the stories we find along the way.
