Was für ein Ritt auf der Kieler Förde! Im Juni 2026 ging es für uns zur jährlichen Bay2Bay-Regatta der Strander Katamaransegler e.V. in Kiel-Schilksee. Die Bedingungen waren spektakulär – aber definitiv nichts für schwache Nerven: 6 Beaufort ablandiger Wind, flaches Wasser und damit perfekte Voraussetzungen für richtig schnelle Fahrten mit dem Strandkatamaran. Wegen des kräftigen Windes wagten sich allerdings nur gut zehn Boote an den Start. Ich war als Gast mit unserer Nacra 570 „Wahoo“ dabei. Mit an Bord: Mein Vorschoter, ein erfahrener Laser-Standard-Segler – allerdings zum allerersten Mal auf einem Katamaran. Nach nur einem Tag Kat-Trapez-Training am Vortag ging es direkt in die Regatta. Die Strecke führte von Kiel-Schilksee um die erste gelbe Kabeltonne in der Kieler Bucht und über den Stollergrund in der Eckernförder Bucht bis zur Untiefentonne bei Surendorf und anschließend wieder zurück nach Strande. Doch schon vor dem Start lief nicht alles nach Plan. Während ich mich um die Kameras kümmerte und filmte, überhörte ich bei der Steuermannbesprechung einen entscheidenden Halbsatz. Das sollte später noch für einige Verwirrung sorgen. Und als wäre das nicht genug, bemerkten wir erst unterwegs, dass wir die Cunningham gar nicht eingehängt hatten und das Großsegel überhaupt nicht richtig durchgesetzt war. Erst nach dem Nachtrimmen wurde die „Wahoo“ wirklich "scharf-geschaltet" – der Geschwindigkeitsunterschied war sofort spürbar. Besonders spannend wurde es an der Wendemarke in der Eckernförder Bucht: Eben noch bei satten 6 Beaufort unterwegs, gerieten wir plötzlich in ein Windloch mit gefühlt nur noch einer Windstärke. Von dort aus ging es anschließend auf einer langen Kreuz zurück Richtung Strande – vorbei an zahlreichen internationalen Teams, die bereits für die Kieler Woche trainierten. Trotz aller kleinen Pannen konnten wir uns am Ende nach Yardstick-Wertung den 🥉 3. Platz sichern – ein Ergebnis, mit dem ich ehrlich gesagt überhaupt nicht gerechnet hatte. While the world was building rockets, computers, and modern diesel engines, somebody was still building hot-bulb semi-diesels based on technology invented in the 1800s. She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main ‘action’ cameras are an Insta Ace pro 2 and a DJI Action 4 while the ‘big camera is a Canon R50. All use Dji mini wireless mics or a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Back up is a Canon 200d. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. I also have two drones, a Magic mini2 and Mavic pro Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over several days. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea:I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. We relieve each other from watch, trying to find our rhythm and slowly adjust to life offshore. Resetting our body clocks to match our new watch schedule, is one of the most important parts early on of a long passage. The calm conditions are helping for now, but in reality, only time at sea can truly make the routine feel natural. The nerves need to settle and we need to get sleep At 32 degrees south, we are still a long way from where we need to be. Thousands of miles of open ocean lie ahead, before we reach our first landfall — the remote island of St Helena at 15 degrees south. This opening stretch of the Atlantic crossing we expect to be the most challenging, whilst calm now, we need to work our way north out of the shifting high and low pressure systems to reach the more settled and predictable trade winds. And this is only the beginning… By the time we arrive in the Caribbean, we will have sailed more than 7000 nautical miles, crossing from 32 degrees south all the way to 12 degrees north. Day three of our shakedown cruise on my new yacht started anchored off Koh Larn, but we decided to sail about 15 miles west to the uninhabited island of Koh Phai. This turned out to be exactly the kind of place I dreamed about when buying this boat — white sand beaches, beautiful clear water, the dogs running around on shore, and a peaceful anchorage all to ourselves. After taking the pups to the beach, we headed back to the boat and inflated a huge floating island off the stern. The dogs, Olivia, and I spent the afternoon lounging in the water before taking the Highfield dinghy around the island to explore. We found a few makeshift beach lounge areas that looked like spots where tour operators bring guests during the day, but by the time we were there, the island felt completely empty. To finish off the day, I cooked Olivia a steak dinner onboard — not a bad way to spend day three on the new yacht. Thanks for watching Sailing Doodles!
