🌊 Sailing Indonesia 🇮🇩 | Episode 1 – Entering Indonesia by Sailboat We finally did it… we made it to Indonesia. 🇮🇩 After days at sea, crossing into a completely new country, we had no idea what to expect. Entering Indonesia by sailboat isn’t as simple as dropping anchor — the check-in process is real, detailed, and something every cruiser talks about… but experiencing it for ourselves was something else entirely. From health checks and paperwork, to welcoming (and very thorough) officials stepping aboard Stella, this was our official introduction to Indonesia — and it’s safe to say, it left an impression. But once we cleared in… everything changed. We found ourselves exploring the island of Sabang by motorbike, weaving through jungle roads, quiet beaches, and getting our first taste of life here. This is the kind of place that feels untouched — raw, beautiful, and full of adventure. Back on the boat, it was time to settle into this new chapter. We jumped in the water, went for a dive, searched for fish (no luck this time 😅), and started preparing for what we came here for… Surf. This is something we’ve dreamed about for a long time — sailing through Indonesia, chasing waves, and exploring some of the most remote islands in the world. And this is just the beginning. In the next episode, we start sailing down the coast in search of our first proper waves in Indonesia… and trust us, things are about to get even better. Thanks so much for being here and supporting our journey — it honestly means the world to us. ❤️ ⛵ ABOUT US We’re Camille & Jesse, a couple who left behind the “normal” path to live full-time on our 39ft sailboat Stella. After working in the Australian mines, we saved everything we could to buy this boat — and taught ourselves how to sail along the way. Now, we’re exploring Southeast Asia one island at a time. 🌴 CURRENT LOCATION: Indonesia ⛵ BOAT: Jeanneau 39i (2007) 📍 FOLLOW OUR JOURNEY: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/stella.overboard TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@stella.overboard 💛 SUPPORT THE CHANNEL: 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. We’re officially crossing into Indonesia… and it’s our very first time doing it. After months of preparing our sailboat Stella, we left Malaysia and set off on a 3 day crossing into Indonesia — sailing straight through the Malacca Strait, one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. This was our first time: – sailing overnight – doing watch shifts alone in the dark – navigating around massive container ships – and crossing into a new country by sea With over 90,000 vessels passing through this strait every year, this crossing was nothing like we expected. From glassy sunsets to pitch-black night sailing… to unexpected storms, engine hiccups, and fishing boats with no AIS — things got intense fast. But after 3 days at sea… we finally saw land. 🇮🇩 Welcome to Indonesia. Next episode, we officially check into the country — with customs, immigration, quarantine, and the harbor master all coming onboard 😅 — before starting our search for remote waves and hidden islands. 🎥 If you’re new here: We’re Camille & Jesse — a young couple who worked in the Australian mines to buy a 39ft sailboat… and now we’re sailing the world. 👍 Subscribe to follow the journey 🌊 Episode 1 of our Indonesia series. 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. #AD This video is in collaboration with International Yacht Paint by AkzoNobel. What we thought would be a quick haul-out for maintenance quickly turned into something much bigger. From sanding the hull and dropping the rudder to installing a new cutless bearing and repainting the bottom, this boatyard visit turned into a full project. In this episode we tackle one of the most important jobs on any sailboat — antifouling the hull. Before we head off to remote Indonesia, we wanted to make sure Stella is fully prepared for warm tropical waters where marine growth builds quickly. To protect the hull we’re applying Micron 99 antifoul paint from International Yacht Paint, along with Primocon primer, as part of their full yacht coatings system designed to provide long-lasting protection below the waterline. Join us as we prep the hull, apply the primer, and roll on the antifoul to get Stella ready to splash and begin our next sailing adventure. We’re only a few days away from putting Stella back in the water, so stay tuned for the splash and our upcoming expedition sailing through Indonesia. --- International Yacht Paint (Asia Pacific): https://www.yachtpaint.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/intlyachtpaintap/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/InternationalYachtPaintAsiaPacific 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. After weeks on the hard stand, the moment of truth has finally arrived. In the last episode we hauled Stella out of the water and immediately ran into one problem after another, removing the propeller, dropping the rudder, pulling the shaft, and even cutting out the cutless bearing twice. Now the work continues. In this episode Jesse returns from Australia with a new cutless bearing, boat parts, and a few surfboards, and we get back to work trying to put Stella back together. From installing the new cutless bearing and prop shaft, to painting the hull with Primocon primer and Micron 99 antifoul, this week has been all about rebuilding Stella piece by piece. With the help of our amazing friends, neighbors on the hard stand, the Rebak Marina team, and Yacht Supplies Malaysia, we finally begin to see real progress. But the real test comes when Stella goes back into the water. Will everything be sealed properly? Will the thru-hulls leak? Will the drip seal hold? Boat life isn’t always sunsets and sailing , sometimes it’s weeks of hard work in the boatyard just to get back out to sea. But once Stella splashes again, the next adventure begins. Now it’s time to provision the boat, organize the interior, and prepare for our next sailing journey… Indonesia. 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. What we thought would be a simple one-week haul out quickly turned into something much bigger… In this episode of Stella Overboard, we haul our sailboat Stella out of the water at Rebak Marina in Langkawi, Malaysia to begin some major maintenance and upgrades before continuing our sailing adventure across Southeast Asia. But almost immediately, things start going wrong. Within the first hour on the hard stand, we discover that removing a propeller is not nearly as simple as it sounds. After hours of hammering, heating, and pulling, we finally get it off — only to realize that we also need to remove the rudder before we can slide the prop shaft out. With the help of the amazing Rebak Marina team, our boatyard neighbors, and friends at Yacht Supplies Malaysia, we lift Stella back into the travel lift to drop the rudder — a job that turns out to be much bigger than expected. And just when we think we’re making progress… another problem appears. After removing our old cutless bearing and spending hours installing a brand new one, we discover the shaft won’t fit back through it, forcing us to cut the brand-new bearing back out again. Now we’re stuck without the part we need — and the only solution might be flying to Australia to pick up a custom one. Boat life isn’t always tropical anchorages and sailing into sunsets… sometimes it’s boatyard chaos, unexpected repairs, and learning everything the hard way. But every step brings us closer to getting Stella back in the water and ready for our next big adventure. ⚓ In this episode: Hauling Stella out of the water Travel lift and hard stand process Removing the propeller and prop shaft Dropping the rudder Cutless bearing replacement Boatyard life in Langkawi DIY sailboat maintenance ⛵ About Us We’re Camille and Jesse, a young couple who worked in the Australian mines to save enough money to buy a sailboat and chase a life of adventure at sea. Now we live aboard our Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 39i sailing through Southeast Asia, sharing the highs, lows, and everything in between. As we have prepared for this voyage, it feels like our whole life. We are finally on the way to Indonesia with a freshly painted boat and uncountable upgrades and provisions. We are now facing 50 hours at sea and our first night sale come along and see how it’s going.
Life on a sailboat means learning how to fix things yourself… sometimes the hard way. In this episode of Stella Overboard, we haul our 39-foot sailboat Stella out of the water in Langkawi, Malaysia and take on one of the most important upgrades a boat owner can do — replacing every thru hull fitting and seacock on the boat. Old thru hulls can be a major safety risk offshore, so while Stella is on the hard stand we decided it was time to upgrade the entire system. With the help of Marine Supplies Asia and TruDesign, Jesse and I tackle the job ourselves — removing old fittings, installing brand new TruDesign composite thru hulls and seacocks, and learning a lot along the way. No boatyard crew. No professionals. Just two sailors figuring it out as we go. This refit is all part of preparing Stella for our next big adventure sailing through Indonesia in search of remote islands and surf breaks. If you're curious about sailboat maintenance, thru hull installations, or what life in a boatyard is really like — this episode is for you. ⚓ Boat: Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 39i 📍 Filmed in Langkawi, Malaysia Big thanks to: Marine Supplies Asia TruDesign 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. What is life really like on a sailboat in Thailand? For the past two months, we’ve been exploring remote islands, sailing in steady 20–25 knots, snorkeling coral reefs, visiting small fishing villages, and living full-time aboard our 39-foot sailboat, Stella — with Jesse’s whole family (and our kitten Shelly 🐾) onboard. In this episode, we share a real look at everyday life on the water: - Sailing between tropical islands -Picking up mooring balls & anchoring in turquoise bays -Snorkeling and checking the boat underwater - Growing food onboard - Cooking meals together - Sunset haircuts on deck - Quiet anchorages with no wind This is the simple, beautiful rhythm of sailboat life in Southeast Asia. Thailand has given us some of our favorite memories yet , warm water, kind people, and anchorages we’ll never forget. Next, we sail back to Malaysia to prepare Stella for our next adventure. 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. A Day in Our Life Living on a Sailboat in Our 20s | Thailand Welcome back aboard Stella Overboard. Today we’re sailing from the north of Thailand back down south toward Krabi as we begin our journey toward Malaysia for our upcoming haul out. It’s another beautiful day in paradise , light winds to start, dancing in the cockpit, pulling up anchor, and setting off with 22 nautical miles ahead of us. Since the wind takes a little while to fill in, we give you a full house tour of our 39ft Jeanneau Sun Odyssey , our floating home. Three berths, one head, a tiny galley, and somehow enough space for four people onboard. Living on a sailboat in your 20s isn’t always glamorous, but it’s ours, and we love it. Eventually the wind picks up and we get both our head sail and main sail out, cruising at up to 13 knots on a tight reach. There’s nothing better than carving through the islands of Thailand with perfect conditions. But sailboat life always comes with the unexpected. As we anchor for the night, we notice a large group of officials boarding boats around us. Soon enough, the water police approach Stella to check our documentation. Luckily, we always make sure to properly check in and out and keep our paperwork ready — because if you don’t, fines can be serious. Some boats nearby were fined 5,000 baht for not having the correct clearance. Thankfully, everything checks out and we’re free to enjoy the anchorage. Clear water, island views, swimming off the boat, putting the outboard on the tender, and heading ashore for food and supplies — this is what a real day of sailboat life looks like. As Jesse takes his parents to the island for snacks and water, we begin preparing for the next four days of sailing down the coast toward Malaysia. Our haul out is coming soon, and we’re excited… and a little nervous. Big projects ahead. Thanks for being here and supporting our journey. Get your mask on and gloves cause it’s time to get to work. We are in the boat yard and sanding and taping up our hall to get ready for our paint.
We are on the hard stand getting out boat ready for Indonesia and it’s a lot of work
Crossing international waters was meant to be smooth sailing… but that’s not how boat life works. In this episode, we face complete engine failure at sea, leaving us troubleshooting fuel systems, bleeding lines, and hoping she starts again. But that was just the beginning. A few days later our toilet pump stopped working (and yes… that’s as inconvenient as it sounds). Then our watermaker failed, and with six people onboard, fresh water becomes very important, very fast. Just when we thought we were in the clear, we had to jump in and swim under the boat to fix our blocked speedometer, scraping out barnacles and cleaning the hull so we could sail smoothly again. This is the real side of sailing life , constant maintenance, problem solving, and learning as we go. It’s not always sunsets and calm seas… but we wouldn’t trade it for anything. Next up: we sail back down the coast of Thailand toward Malaysia for our big haul out. What’s it really like to enter a new country by boat? In this episode, we sail into Thailand and take you along for the full process of entering a country by sailboat — from Immigration and Customs to the Harbour Master. It’s a long, sometimes confusing day that looks very different from flying into a country, and it’s all part of the reality of full-time boat life. Because we’re entering by sea, we have to handle all the paperwork ourselves, travel hours inland, and officially bring both ourselves and our sailboat into the country , something most travelers never see. We didn’t film inside government buildings, as filming isn’t permitted in these areas. After hours of paperwork, ferries, long drives, and waiting, we finally make it back to our boat, but the adventure doesn’t stop there. The very next day, we lift anchor and continue exploring Thailand’s islands by sailboat. If you’re curious about sailing internationally, living on a boat full-time, or what life looks like beyond airports and hotels, this episode is for you. ⚓️ Subscribe for more real-life sailing, travel, and adventure 🌊 New episodes every Sunday 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. Sailing through Phang Nga Bay, Thailand, we found something rare — real seclusion. While most visitors experience this place on crowded day tours, we get to choose where we go, when we stop, and where we drop anchor. Hidden lagoons, quiet mangroves, towering limestone cliffs, and caves that feel untouched , all without the crowds. This is the freedom of full-time boat life. We’re often the only ones here after sunset, sleeping surrounded by nature, listening to the jungle come alive, and waking up to complete stillness. In this episode, we explore secret hongs and caves by tender, anchor in crystal-clear water, and soak in the kind of peace you can only find when your home floats. This is Phang Nga Bay from the water , and it’s why we chose this life. In this episode, we spend the day sailing island to island in Thailand, riding incredible dry-season winds and soaking up some seriously beautiful scenery. Our original plan was to explore underwater caves, but after realizing we didn’t have the right dive gear, and spending a rocky night at anchor—we changed course and kept sailing. From smooth passages and stronger winds to arriving in Koh Lanta, dropping anchor next to friends, and heading ashore to explore by motorbike, this day is a perfect snapshot of life sailing in Thailand. As the sun sets, we wrap up the day and get ready to check into the country by sailboat—something we’ll be sharing next. If you’re curious about sailing Southeast Asia, island hopping in Thailand, or what daily life on a sailboat really looks like, this one’s for you. 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. This is a real point-of-view sailing passage from Malaysia to Thailand, filmed entirely from onboard as we sail with six people on a 39-foot sailboat. This new year started fast — Jesse’s whole family flew out to join us, and suddenly our quiet boat turned into a full house. With limited stops ahead, we had to provision enough food for weeks, make sure the watermaker was running properly, and prepare for a challenging sail north. The wind has been strong, and there were a few scary moments when the boat rounded up. We reefed the sails to keep everyone comfortable, lowered the heel, and took things slow and steady. Out of six people onboard, only two got seasick — not bad considering the conditions. This video is pure POV sailing — no narration, no filters. Just real movement, real sounds, and real life at sea as we cross borders by boat. Put on headphones, relax, and feel like you’re sailing onboard with us. 💙 A huge thank you to everyone supporting us on Patreon — you truly help make this sailboat life possible. We get asked this question all the time — why did we buy a sailboat in Southeast Asia? In this video, we break down exactly why buying our sailboat in Langkawi, Malaysia ended up being one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. From tax-free boat purchases, to affordable upgrades and repairs, easy access to yacht supplies, and safe, beautiful sailing — we show you the real reasons sailors from all over the world come here to buy, refit, and launch their boats. We talk about: • Why Malaysia (and Langkawi) is tax-free • How we saved huge money on davits, electrics, and rigging • Installing a full Victron Energy setup • Access to yacht supply stores and marina deliveries • Why Langkawi is a safe, beginner-friendly place to sail • The massive international sailing community here • And how close you are to Thailand, Indonesia, and beyond If you’re thinking about buying a sailboat — especially outside the US, Australia, or Europe — this video is for you. If you want to see boats for sale locally, check out Sea Spray Yacht Sales — they’re right next door to us at the marina. Thanks so much for watching and supporting the channel.
