This week we’re chasing swell through some of the most remote islands in Indonesia. 🌊⛵ With the waves still pumping, Jesse somehow manages to damage his board… which isn’t exactly ideal when you’re hundreds of miles from the nearest surf shop. Luckily, we remember there’s a nearby surf resort with a few boards and decide to see if we can find him a replacement before the swell disappears. With a new board under his feet, we squeeze in one final session before heading back out to sea for an overnight passage up the coast, chasing the swell to our next surf spot. Along the way we cross the equator, hook a tuna as the sun goes down, and prepare Stella for more than 30 hours at sea. 🌊 What started as a normal surf session turned into one of our favourite days in Indonesia. After meeting a group of surfers while exploring the Telos Islands, we invited them aboard Stella, our 39-foot sailboat, for a day chasing remote waves that can only be reached by boat. With surfboards loaded, sails raised, and the handline out hoping to catch dinner, we set off in search of perfect lefts, rights, and a full day of adventure. What started as a simple surf mission quickly turned into one of our favorite adventures in Indonesia. We thought we had found the perfect anchorage in remote Indonesia… Empty surf breaks, crystal clear water, hidden mangrove rivers, and not another boat in sight. After days of heavy squalls and unpredictable weather, we sailed Stella deep into one of the most remote island chains we’ve explored so far hoping to find shelter, good surf, and a safe place to wait out the storms. And at first… it felt like paradise. We spent our days exploring the mangroves by dinghy, searching for empty reef breaks, surfing perfect waves, and fishing for food while living completely off-grid aboard our sailboat. But everything changed when our friends flew the drone over the bay… and spotted a massive crocodile swimming right beneath them. Suddenly this beautiful tropical anchorage started feeling a lot different. This part of Indonesia is not only known for crocodiles, but also dangerous squalls, strong currents, remote jungle islands, and some of the highest malaria cases in the region. How did two people in their 20s afford to buy a sailboat and sail around the world? In this episode of Stella Overboard, we finally sit down and share the full story of how we went from living in a beat-up van in Australia to buying a 39ft sailboat and sailing across Southeast Asia full-time. A few years ago we had almost no money, no house, no savings, and honestly no idea what our future looked like. After meeting in Byron Bay, Australia, we spent months living out of our van, traveling the coast, surfing, fishing, and trying to figure out how we could create a completely different life for ourselves. That’s when we made the decision to work FIFO mining jobs in remote Western Australia. FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) work meant living for weeks at a time in isolated mining camps deep in the Australian outback, working exhausting 12-hour shifts in extreme heat, dirt, iron ore dust, and nonstop routines. It was physically and mentally draining, but it gave us one opportunity we never thought we’d have — the ability to save serious money quickly. For nearly two years we sacrificed comfort, freedom, time together, and pretty much everything normal people in their 20s were doing… all with one goal: Buy a sailboat and escape the traditional path. While many people around us were buying houses, financing cars, and settling into city life, we took a completely different route and invested everything into a life of adventure, freedom, travel, sailing, surfing, and living off-grid on the ocean.
