Cyclone Alfred is coming. We scout out various locations and decide on the Santa Barbara boat ramp, where we should get good protection from the wind. Magnus works on the engines to make sure they are tickety boo for the cyclone in case we need to move in a hurry. The cyclone path keeps shifting, but eventually, it heads straight for us. We continue working on fixing the roof. It's time to epoxy the ply boards in so they don't leak. Magnus gives the carburettors a bit of a tickle up because, as we go to leave our anchorage, the engines aren't doing as they should. After removing the filter, we realise the fuel in the tank is probably the culprit, so Magnus polishes the fuel with our Mr Funnel fuel funnel. It does an amazing job. Magnus works out an ingenious way to clean Peanut's hull on shore using a few rope contraptions. Peanut is now ready to go fast again. Wendy heads to the UK to visit family while Magnus continues work on the foredeck and upper deck. It's hard going as the weather isn't kind and there are many rainy days, but he makes progress. More housekeeping reveals just how many things are dodgy in the Nuthouse, with more boat jobs rearing their ugly heads. Magnus utilises one of the existing antennas and builds a new one for our AIS system. We plan to test the kite and invite friends aboard to have more hands on deck while we learn. Unfortunately, the weather isn't on our side, with white caps on the water forcing us to abort. We'll give it another crack later. We check out Victoria Point as an option for moving our car. It's tricky having a car while cruising on a boat, as you constantly have to piggyback it with you. We won't have it for long. We head to Myora, a well-known anchorage nearby. Initially, there are only a few boats, but the numbers quickly grow to over 35 moored around us. Preferring quieter spots, we decide to leave. We then begin our longest passage yet in the Nuthouse, making our way to Pumicestone Passage. This requires crossing Moreton Bay, a notoriously treacherous stretch of water. Magnus has four backup anchorages planned in case the weather turns or the Nuthouse can't make it. After tucking in due to white caps and a choppy, confused sea, we finally reach Pumicestone Passage. Along the way, Nutty is tested in adverse conditions, though they pale in comparison to what she'll face in the open ocean. We now know that we will have to make a very important decision, very soon. We take a drive to visit a couple of cruisers who are kindly accepting our post. Magnus looks forward to picking up a Raspberry Pi, which he will use to build an autopilot for Nutshell. We do a fuel run with the jerries in the car, using a wonderful app called Petrol Spy to find the cheapest fuel around. It makes a massive difference to the cost. Magnus fixes the fuel flow meter, and we now know our fuel consumption on Nutshell. He also orders a rudder feedback unit part and connects it. That's another job off the ever-increasing list! We continue the boat jobs, and Wendy spends many days painting five layers of barrier and antifoul on the hull. Magnus replaces the propellers to improve fuel consumption. After a month, we finally leave the boatyard and head out. It's not long before something happens, and Magnus takes a look at the windlass, which is failing. Sheep to the rescue! It's time for a chat. It's been a while. We are now on the Nutshell Houseboat, floating around the Coomera River in Queensland. We tested the Nuthouse out in the semi-protected waters of Moreton Bay and concluded that she is not safe enough for the Kimberley, so our plans have totally changed. We are going to sell both boats - SV Nutshell, which is currently at a marina in Darwin, and the Nuthouse. Instead, we'll head over to Europe to continue exploring, starting in England. We'll buy a motorhome to use as a base for our travels while we search for the next Nutshell. We're not in a hurry, so we'll take the time to smell the roses, exploring the many beautiful, historic and interesting towns and rural areas. We now have a couple of weeks to get the Nuthouse ready to sell, so we're going to be crazy busy. It's time to tackle the damage caused by the roof leak in the master cabin. We both remove the old carpet and floor sheeting. After seeing how mouldy and rotten the underfloor timbers are, we have to replace a great deal of the wood. We start grinding and filling the dents on the hull, then get to painting the barrier coat. The weather is getting worse and we try to make our way onward, but we have to turn back and anchor up. Magnus notices there is a major leak at the helm station and so goes about investigating. The windscreen isn't actually attached! We add that to our boat jobs list. We go in search of a place to dry out to assess the damage from the transducer being ripped off the boat. After a few attempts, we finally manage to land Nutshell. This week is all about power and sorting out Nutshell's systems. Her wiring is in need of TLC. We buy a state-of-the-art Victron Multiplus II GX inverter and get ready to install our lithium batteries. Magnus tackles the deck cupboard, clearing out a load of useless stuff, including a large generator and various old batteries. We begin to make a dent in clearing out the extra stuff on the boat. After darting here and there to buy provisions, fuel, fiberglass supplies, and various necessary items, we finally leave the marina. And, just for fun, we set off in a storm-it seems to be our way of traveling! We left Mexico to cross the Pacific in a massive storm. After a terrible night with a huge storm everything is calm again and we leave our anchorage and head towards Millionaires Row which is very beautiful. Magnus tries to follow some of the electrical cables from the helm station up to the flybridge. It's tricky because there are cables everywhere, nothing to code and no labels. It's a real rat's nest! We need to collect our car which is parked quite a distance away so after mooring up at the fuel jetty at Horizon Shores Marina we head off in Peanut for her longest trip ever. We take a shortcut through the very shallow and ever-changing creeks and finally get through after quite a few false attempts! We get to see an amazing sight! We move around the Broadwater and Pimpama River, testing Nutshell's systems. The Boat Works chandlery is nearby, which is handy because we need to keep picking up parts for various boat jobs. Magnus continues to work on the toilet, but we won't mention that. Nutshell gets new stickers with The Boat now officially defunct. We head to a very remote area and scout out a few sandbars to see where will be suitable to beach Nutshell so we can check her bottom. We get caught out by a storm which puts us on a lee shore. Magnus finishes a few boat jobs before we leave Hope Island Marina for a short shakedown cruise around the corner to Santa Barbara boat ramp. There are so many jobs to do. Magnus cleans up a batch of old solar panels. We pick up last-minute supplies and load the car. It's finally time to go! We leave Airlie Beach and begin the fourteen-hour drive south to the Gold Coast and our new home on the water. Once we arrive, we unload the car and, after a very long first day, we cook up delicious burgers on the house BBQ. She may be a big boat, but she lacks storage, so after much discussion, we head off to IKEA to buy stacks of drawer units. FINAL JOURNEY ON NUTSHELL: BERKELEY RIVER TO DARWIN We embark on our final sail on Nutshell, navigating down the stunning Berkeley River, passing close to the vertical gorge walls and finally anchoring near the river's end. Taking Peanut, we head to the end of the river to check if the water is still flowing. It's a different time of year-end of the wet season-and the Kimberley landscape is quite different, with most of the waterfalls now dry. We spot a resident crocodile. We are very used to crocodiles, so we keep a safe distance. Next, we make our way to a hidden creek and billabong to fill up our bladder for our water supply on Nutshell. Finally, we leave the Berkeley River and sail to our anchorage at Crab Craw Island, where we indulge in a much-awaited parmy at the local restaurant. Our journey concludes as we sail to Darwin for the long-awaited final country check-in process and clearance. Thank you for being part of our incredible voyage on Nutshell.
