After leaving Australia we fly to India and land in Chennai. We spend some time exploring Chennai and checking out local tourist spots. A wander through Pondi Bazaar gives us a taste of the city’s energy and some superb Indian meals. It’s good to be back. Next we pick up our hire car, the one that’ll take us across India. Once we make our way out of Chennai we head south to Pondicherry, a beautiful area known for its striking buildings and complex past. From there we drive up into the hills to Erode Hill Station where we find the most incredible place to stay. It’s been created from old government buildings, cinemas, bridges and other unexpected structures. No two rooms are the same and the architecture is wonderfully higgledy piggledy. We continue to make our way to Perth via bush camps and windy dirt tracks. We find some amazing wild camp spots with plenty of wildflowers everywhere. We take a sandy track to explore and end up having to turn around because the road is too boggy and we are towing the camper. It’s remote and we don’t want to get bogged with no help in sight. It’s a 3 hour round trip! Worth it though to see the beautiful landscapes. The Valkry gets lots of use and we enjoy getting to know how she cooks. We take a break between tours and head off into the bush to camp. It’s serene, and we’re enjoying the tranquility—until Magnus spots a bushfire heading our way… We leave our camper and move out onto the road, where it’s safer. After a very quick stop at the farm, we pack everything into the Land Cruiser and begin to make our way to Darwin to check on Nutshell. After checking in on SV Nutshell and making sure she's tickety-boo we do a quick turnaround and head south to Broome to start our tour guiding season in Kimberley. We continue to work on the boat jobs. We’re trying to get the top deck coated so we can leave it safely without water getting in. We are both exhausted. Then, it’s time to head into the marina and empty Nutshell. It takes days to finish as much as we can and finally get her ready to sell. Cyclone Alfred has now passed, but the worst is yet to come. We now have massive trees hurtling towards us and bits of debris. It’s a constant battle to keep removing them from the hulls where they keep getting caught. It’s full on! After a while the banks of the river burst and the current reduces dramatically. We move to more protected waters with less of the river flow, but it’s tricky going as it’s very difficult to manoeuvre the nuthouse in such huge currents. Magnus uses everything that he can to keep Nutty from hurtling toward the sandbanks and riverbanks. It’s a lot. Once that’s all dealt with it’s time to get back to fixing up the roof. The weather is not helping us. It just won’t stop raining and when there is a small weather window, it’s too hot to apply the gelcoat. We can’t get a break. Finally, we decide that we’re just not going to get Nutshell finished and we can only do our best with the short amount of time that we have left. We plan on leaving Nutshell on the hard and coming back to finish her after our Kimberley tour guide season ends September 2025, but, as always seems to happen, plans change… Thanks for watching. We continue working on fixing the roof. It’s time to epoxy the ply boards in so they don’t leak. Magnus gives the carburettors a bit of a tickle up because, as we go to leave our anchorage, the engines aren’t doing as they should. After removing the filter, we realise the fuel in the tank is probably the culprit, so Magnus polishes the fuel with our Mr Funnel fuel funnel. It does an amazing job. Magnus works out an ingenious way to clean Peanut’s hull on shore using a few rope contraptions. Peanut is now ready to go fast again. Wendy heads to the UK to visit family while Magnus continues work on the foredeck and upper deck. It’s hard going as the weather isn’t kind and there are many rainy days, but he makes progress. More housekeeping reveals just how many things are dodgy in the Nuthouse, with more boat jobs rearing their ugly heads. Magnus utilises one of the existing antennas and builds a new one for our AIS system. We plan to test the kite and invite friends aboard to have more hands on deck while we learn. Unfortunately, the weather isn’t on our side, with white caps on the water forcing us to abort. We’ll give it another crack later. We check out Victoria Point as an option for moving our car. It’s tricky having a car while cruising on a boat, as you constantly have to piggyback it with you. We won’t have it for long. We head to Myora, a well-known anchorage nearby. Initially, there are only a few boats, but the numbers quickly grow to over 35 moored around us. Preferring quieter spots, we decide to leave. We then begin our longest passage yet in the Nuthouse, making our way to Pumicestone Passage. This requires crossing Moreton Bay, a notoriously treacherous stretch of water. Magnus has four backup anchorages planned in case the weather turns or the Nuthouse can’t make it. After tucking in due to white caps and a choppy, confused sea, we finally reach Pumicestone Passage. Along the way, Nutty is tested in adverse conditions, though they pale in comparison to what she’ll face in the open ocean. We now know that we will have to make a very important decision, very soon. We take a drive to visit a couple of cruisers who are kindly accepting our post. Magnus looks forward to picking up a Raspberry Pi, which he will use to build an autopilot for Nutshell. We do a fuel run with the jerries in the car, using a wonderful app called Petrol Spy to find the cheapest fuel around. It makes a massive difference to the cost. Magnus fixes the fuel flow meter, and we now know our fuel consumption on Nutshell. He also orders a rudder feedback unit part and connects it. That’s another job off the ever-increasing list! We continue the boat jobs, and Wendy spends many days painting five layers of barrier and antifoul on the hull. Magnus replaces the propellers to improve fuel consumption. After a month, we finally leave the boatyard and head out. It’s not long before something happens, and Magnus takes a look at the windlass, which is failing. Sheep to the rescue! It’s time for a chat. It’s been a while. We are now on the Nutshell Houseboat, floating around the Coomera River in Queensland. We tested the Nuthouse out in the semi-protected waters of Moreton Bay and concluded that she is not safe enough for the Kimberley, so our plans have totally changed. We are going to sell both boats – SV Nutshell, which is currently at a marina in Darwin, and the Nuthouse. Instead, we’ll head over to Europe to continue exploring, starting in England. We’ll buy a motorhome to use as a base for our travels while we search for the next Nutshell. We’re not in a hurry, so we’ll take the time to smell the roses, exploring the many beautiful, historic and interesting towns and rural areas. We now have a couple of weeks to get the Nuthouse ready to sell, so we’re going to be crazy busy. It’s time to tackle the damage caused by the roof leak in the master cabin. We both remove the old carpet and floor sheeting. After seeing how mouldy and rotten the underfloor timbers are, we have to replace a great deal of the wood. We start grinding and filling the dents on the hull, then get to painting the barrier coat. The weather is getting worse and we try to make our way onward, but we have to turn back and anchor up. Magnus notices there is a major leak at the helm station and so goes about investigating. The windscreen isn’t actually attached! We add that to our boat jobs list. We make our way to the Horizon Shores Boatyard where we will haul out for a month to antifoUL Nutshell’s hull and check all underwater systems. It’s going to be busy.
