De sidste måneder har været lidt af en mundfuld. Vi har været vant til at være to om vores bådprojekter, men denne gang stod jeg pludselig med det meste af arbejdet under vandlinjen alene. Og jeg skal da lige love for, at det har været hårdt! Jeg er faktisk ret stolt af alt det, jeg har fået lavet på egen hånd. Men der har også været dage, hvor jeg har haft allermest lyst til at smide værktøjet og sætte mig ned, tude og bestille en enkelt billet til Danmark 🫠 For det har ikke kun handlet om slibning, maling og en to-do-liste, der aldrig syntes at blive kortere. Det har også handlet om at savne Christian. Og om den hjemve til familie og venner derhjemme, som indimellem kommer snigende. Det har hjulpet når Christian er kommet hjem til mig. Og så har vi været to til at alle de andre projekter ❤️ Hver gang han er kommet hjem fra Grønland, har han knap nok nået at komme sig over jetlagget, før vi har kastet os over det næste bådprojekt. Og så har vi knoklet videre sammen, indtil han skulle afsted igen. Det er ikke altid lige romantisk at være på vej jorden rundt. Nogle gange er det faktisk mest hårdt arbejde, savn og en hel masse praktiske ting, der skal gå op. Men vi gør det sammen. Også når vi er flere tusinde kilometer fra hinanden. La lunghezza fuori tutto può comprendere elementi come plancette di poppa e delfiniere: strutture utili, ma che non corrispondono necessariamente a maggiore spazio interno. Distinguere l’ingombro complessivo dalle dimensioni dello scafo è il primo passo per un confronto sensato. Stessa lunghezza, abitabilità diversa Larghezza, altezza interna e distribuzione dei volumi cambiano completamente la vivibilità a bordo. Una barca di 10 metri può privilegiare una grande cabina armatore, mentre un’altra può distribuire gli spazi tra più cabine. 115 solo sailors will be starting the Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe on Sunday 1st November from St. Malo, France. The fleets taking part are the mighty Ultim trimarans, the IMOCA 60 foot yachts we saw in the Vendee Globe, the Ocean50 trimarans, Class 40 monohulls, and vintage multi and monohulls. The course is a theoretical 3,542 nautical miles, with a single start for all the fleets from Saint Malo at 1:02 pm French time, heading to a gate off Cap Fréhel, past the Ushant headland and out in the north Atlantic. The fleet will then dive south, using the weather systems to their best advantage, past the Azores for the stretch across to Guadeloupe in the south Caribbean Sea for the finish line. The outright record is held by Charles Caudrelier on Gitana 17, his previous Ultim trimaran, at 6 days, 19 hours, 47 minutes and 25 seconds, while the IMOCA record was set by François Gabart in 2014 and stands at 12 days, 4 hours, 38 minutes, 55 seconds. Race Village The Race Village in Saint Malo is huge, the biggest ever seen for an offshore sailing event, and has seen tens of thousands of people flock to the port city in Brittany to see the boats and meet the skippers. With 115 boats taking part there is a lot to take in, with the 8 Ultims, the leviathans of the sea, being the star attractions. These trimarans are up to 32 metres long and 23 metres wide and the fleet has seen some major upgrades. Anthony Marchand's Actual Ultim 3 has a new mast, Armel Le Cléac'h's Maxi Banque Populaire XI has a new daggerboard, Thomas Coville's Sodebo Ultim 3 has a new set of foils and Tom Laperche's SVR-Lazartigue has new foils and rudders. But all eyes are on Charles Caudrelier’s Gitana 18, the radical new Ultim with T-foils and unique U foil rudders so we take a look at just what this amazing yacht can do. IMOCA Franco-Brit Sam Goodchild has an incredible record in the IMOCA since he took the helm of Macif in 2025. This is the yacht which the late, great Charlie Dalin won the Vendee Globe 2024-25 edition in, and is clearly still the reference in the fleet, despite a host of new yachts being launched. As always, Goodchild is pragmatic about his chances and said, "I'm proud to be labelled a favourite, but I also know that doesn't mean anything. There is still a race to be run, and as we all know, a great deal can happen between the start and the finish line." Class 40 Of the 115 solo skippers taking part, 49 are in the Class40 fleet. This is the proving ground for those who are looking to step up to the IMOCA’s to campaign for the Vendee Globe and has some of the best up and coming offshore sailors, which makes it one of the hardest to call a favourite. Storms Just a week ago the Brittany coast was being battered by storms, and the yachts were secured well to the docks, and it was a case of batten down the hatches for the race village, and some of the surrounding building in Saint Malo. Thankfully conditions are looking considerably more benign on race day, with the start on Sunday 1st November looking like it will have sunshine and a 10 to 15 knot north easterly breeze to help power the fleet down the French coast. ► What if it were possible to cut the weight of certain interior fittings in half without changing manufacturing methods? That's the promise of CompoLite, a range of materials developed by Ascorium, bringing nearly 30 years of automotive industry experience to the marine sector. At the Cannes Yachting Festival, we met with Peter Niggemeier, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, to find out more. ► Having worked with Mercedes, Porsche, BMW, Volvo, Stellantis and Renault, Ascorium began exploring marine applications around two years ago. Its CompoLite 2D solution is specifically designed to replace plywood in interior fittings, with a claimed weight reduction of approximately 50%. ► The material combines a polyurethane foam core with fiber reinforcement encapsulated in polyurethane. Its main advantage? It can be worked just like plywood, using the same machines, tools and CNC machining programs. It is also compatible with the finishes commonly used in the marine industry, including HPL, CPL and textured PU coatings. Bulkheads, doors, flooring, furniture and tables can therefore be manufactured without disrupting established shipyard practices. ► On a multihull, every pound saved can improve performance or help offset the increasing weight of onboard equipment, particularly batteries. CompoLite can also be used in refit projects to reduce the weight of existing interiors. ► The long-awaited big brother of the proven Knysna 500SE is finally afloat! At the Annapolis Sailboat Show, our CEO Gwen Dorning had the opportunity to discover this South African-built bluewater cruising catamaran at its world premiere. Better still, she was lucky enough to get aboard for a sail on Chesapeake Bay! ► The yacht we tested (hull #2) had only just completed her Atlantic crossing from South Africa with her Owners. After 20 years sailing a 45-foot monohull, they decided to make the switch to a multihull, prioritizing comfort, safety and ease of handling for extended cruising. And who could blame them? "Our sea trial began in a light breeze, with just 6 knots of apparent wind," Gwen explains. "Yet even in these conditions, the Knysna 550 managed to maintain a speed of 4 to 5 knots - a pleasant first surprise! When the wind picked up to 16-18 knots, the catamaran really accelerated, and our GPS showed 10 to 10.3 knots under mainsail and genoa. The dream began in Genoa. We've spent four years looking for the best bike to have on board Fair Isle. After giving away our old bikes to friends in Turkey because they were too heavy and used up too much space, we found we really missed having bikes aboard. We needed to find a model that folded up small, was light enough to get in the dinghy and to shore and was good quality and nice to ride. Previously we had always found fold up bikes were not a good ride, they creaked and rattled, felt jittery and quickly fell apart. We needed to find a quality bike that was good to ride and would last at sea. To be honest this search shouldn't have taken too long. Being British we have come across Brompton bikes before, we knew people who had them and swore by them. Our neighbour in Eastbourne marina had 3! One for the boat, one for his RV and one for home. However we had never ridden a Brompton and being in the Med and then the Caribbean didn't have them available to try. Until we got to Gibraltar that is. Gibraltar has a big bike shop next to Ocean Village Marina and it rents bikes for going up the rock, it is also a Brompton dealer. You may have seen in our episode there we tried out several models and knew straight away we had found the bike we needed. The only thing was we weren't sure of which model. Luckily for us Brompton agreed to let us have some bikes on loan to test out and decide which would suit us best, and hopefully give our viewers an insight into what these bikes can offer. So in this video we go through that testing and give you the results. It seems the world is catching on to the unique quality of Brompton bikes and they are expanding world wide, that's a very good thing because you should now be able to buy one where ever you are.
