#sailing #boatfoolssailing #morgan384 #boatwork #boatprojects #sailboat Our ‘New’ Sailboat Is Already Fighting Back | Morgan 384 Canadian Ken and I are back aboard our “new-to-us” Morgan 384 as we race to get her ready for charter season in Maine… but like every old sailboat, she has a few opinions of her own. ⚓😅 This week: projects, surprises, problem-solving, and the very real joys (and headaches) of bringing a classic cruising sailboat back to life. Because with old boats… the adventure usually starts after you buy them. #boatfoolssailing #pocketcruiser #Budgetboat #sailboat #trailerablesailboat #boattour 26 Feet, 2 Cabins & Only $5,400?! | 1977 Parker Dawson 26 Pocket Cruiser | Full Tour ***Quick note: technically this boat has a swing keel, which is 1,100 lbs, and locks in the down position for offshore. Unlike a centerboard, which is more for lateral resistance, this swing keel, when down, adds significant stability. Canadian Ken and I were absolutely smitten by the charm, cleanliness, and quality of this beautifully kept 1977 Parker Dawson 26 — a rare and clever American-made trailerable pocket cruiser that offers far more space and versatility than you’d ever expect from a 26-foot sailboat. Designed by Robert Finch (who also co-designed the hugely successful Catalina 27), the Parker Dawson 26 first appeared in the early 1970s and quickly stood out for its center-cockpit, double-cabin layout — an incredibly unusual feature in a boat this size. This smart design creates two separate living spaces, including a dedicated aft cabin with twin bunks and sink, plus a forward cabin with galley, dinette, v-berth, and quarter berth. It’s the kind of compact cruising sailboat that makes you wonder why more builders didn’t follow this formula. CHAPTERS: 00:00 Intro - Which Cabin is Better? 00:58 What is a Parker Dawson 26? 03:38 Centerboard, Rudder & Topsides 08:18 The Cockpit, Helm & Engine 11:59 The Aft Cabin 15:42 The Main Cabin, Galley, Centerboard Controls 21:22 Our Final Thoughts! With a beam of 8 feet, the Parker Dawson 26 is legally trailerable in many areas, and thanks to its shoal draft centerboard keel, she draws just 1'8" board up and 5'4" board down. That means easy launching, shallow-water exploring, protected coves, coastal gunkholing, and weekend adventures where deeper boats can’t go. Parker Dawson 26 Key Specs: Length Overall (LOA): 25'7" Beam: 8'0" Draft: 1'8" board up / 5'4" board down Displacement: Approx. 4,000 lbs Fiberglass construction Commonly powered by small Yanmar diesel or outboard Center cockpit sailboat Double cabin layout Trailerable cruiser design This one especially impressed us for how clean, honest, and well cared for it appears. For anyone dreaming of affordable sailing, a compact cruiser, a trailerable sailboat, or a charming weekender with real accommodations, this Parker Dawson 26 deserves a serious look. #sailing #sailboat #pearson35 #sailboatsforsale #sailboattour $100K Spent on This 1974 Pearson 35 — Offered at $39,500 | FULL TOUR $100,000 was spent refitting this Pearson 35… and it’s listed for $39,500. We went to see if it actually lives up to the numbers. This week we’re in Warwick, Rhode Island, where my brother Tim and I step aboard a 1974 Pearson 35 that has undergone a truly remarkable transformation. Designed by Bill Shaw, the Pearson 35 was one of Pearson Yachts’ first true performance cruisers—and one of the longest production runs in the company’s history (1968–1982). But this one? This one is something else. Since 2022, $100,000 has been invested into a comprehensive refit focused on systems, reliability, and sailing performance. The result is a classic New England cruiser with modern systems throughout—and just a handful of cosmetic projects left for the next owner. A survey from 2023 is available for review. ⚠️ Full disclosure: We have a financial interest in this boat and we are representing the seller. #boatfoolssailing #sailboat #boatbuilding #boatrestoration #modelboat This 5-Foot Sailboat Is Built Like the Real Thing! | 1941 Bugeye Model This week on BoatFools Sailing, we found something completely different… and completely captivating. At just 5 feet long, this handcrafted 1941 Bugeye model isn’t your typical pond boat. Built and restored by shipwright Captain Neal Parker, this miniature Chesapeake classic is constructed with the same care, detail, and techniques used on full-sized working vessels. Like her full sized version, which were originally carved from logs, the scale model is too. Impressive! Originally, Bugeyes were iconic workboats used for oyster dredging and scallop dragging on the Chesapeake Bay—rugged, purposeful, and unmistakably beautiful. What makes this model so remarkable is that it captures all of that history… in just five feet. From the bowsprit to the stern, every detail tells a story. And in the offseason, while most boats are hauled and covered, craftsmen like Captain Neal are keeping maritime history alive—one model at a time. His has repaired models from all over the world and some reside in the Mystic Seaport Museum in Stonington, Connecticut. He's the real deal. If you love classic sailboats, traditional craftsmanship, and the stories behind the boats, this one’s for you. ⚓ Could this be the smallest “real” sailboat we’ve ever profiled? Every once in a while, a boat shows up that stops us in our tracks. This is one of those boats. Canadian Ken and I were tipped off to what can only be described as a true barn find — a 1966 LeComte Northeast 38 MKII, owned by the same family for more than 20 years and now quietly coming to market. And here’s the kicker… Only 15 of these Mark II models were ever built. Designed by legendary naval architect William H. Tripp Jr. and built in Holland by LeComte Yachts, the Northeast 38 represents a golden era of yacht design — where performance, craftsmanship, and beauty were expected to coexist. The perfect boat for the nostalgic mariner... Sea-kindly motion and proven offshore pedigree Classic teak interior with that unmistakable warmth With an LOA of 38’3” and a narrow, elegant beam, this is a boat that feels every bit like a proper offshore thoroughbred. The Market Reality: Comparable Northeast 38s have recently listed between $42K–$49K. This one? $39,000. And when you factor in condition, pedigree, and sheer rarity… it starts to feel like something more than just a listing. They get chosen. And boats like this — honest, well-kept, and quietly exceptional — tend to disappear fast. So the question is: Is this one of those boats? #boatfoolssailing #bluewatersailing #robertperry #sailboattour #sailing Robert H. Perry's COOLEST Sailboat? Fits & Ships in a Container | Far Harbour 39 TOUR | $99k The Robert H. Perry–designed Far Harbour 39 is unlike almost any cruising sailboat ever built. This remarkable boat was created with one very unusual design brief: build the largest cruising sailboat possible that can fit inside a standard 40-foot shipping container — hull, keel, mast and all. Why? So owners could ship their own boat anywhere in the world and start cruising without having to make long ocean passages. Much has been written about this boat and we have put some links below for further reading. In this episode of BoatFools Sailing, Canadian Ken and Tristram Coburn tour Hull No. 1 of the Far Harbour 39, a truly innovative cruising sailboat that proves brilliant design can flourish even under strict constraints. CHAPTERS: 00:00 Intro 00:15 Canadian Ken and I introduce the Far Harbour 39 01:33 Up On Deck 06:42 The Cockpit 09:51 Below Decks! 14:22 The Head & V-Berth 18:29 The Yanmar Engine 20:29 A Near Fall! 21:02 The Rudder, Keel & Hull 25:13 Final Thoughts! Despite the narrow 7’5” beam required to fit inside a container, Perry managed to create a boat that: • Sails surprisingly well • Handles offshore conditions confidently • Offers comfortable accommodations for a cruising couple • Can be disassembled and reassembled in a boatyard for shipping around the world The result is a long, slender, efficient hull that moves beautifully through the water while delivering a bright pilothouse interior and practical cruising layout. The boat we toured, Inbox, is Hull No. 1 of the Far Harbour 39 and she has already visited many corners of the world — with a longest passage of just 107 nautical miles. Instead of crossing oceans, she simply sails locally, gets loaded into a container, and ships to the next cruising ground. She remains in good condition, well equipped, and ready for her next adventure. Join us as we take a full tour of this fascinating container-ship-able cruising sailboat and explore why this clever design might be one of Robert Perry’s most intriguing boats ever built. #boatfoolssailing #sailboattour #classicsailboat #seabreeze35 #offshorelife 1971 Allied Seabreeze 35 Citation — A $24K Atlantic Contender | Full Tour Could a $24,000 classic offshore cruiser really be considered for an Atlantic crossing? Today we take a hard look at a 1971 Allied Seabreeze 35 — a Finisterre/Sparkman & Stephens inspired design that surprised us in all the right ways. This tour is a little different because one of our consulting clients not only is considering buying this boat for an Atlantic crossing, he came all the way from Norway to have a look at this boat and 5 others. He also stood in as our cameraman! Designed and built to behave when the weather turns, the Allied Seabreeze 35 carries unmistakable offshore DNA. Designed by MacLear & Harris and modeled after the legendary Sparkman & Stephens No. 1054 Finisterre, this keel/centerboard cruiser combines traditional lines with practical versatility — stiffness from a 4,000-lb lead keel paired with shoal draft access when the board is raised. At just 3'10" board-up draft, she opens up harbors many offshore boats can’t reach. Drop the centerboard and she tracks beautifully to weather while retaining the easy manners of a long-keel hull in a following sea. This particular boat came onto our radar while helping a client evaluate several offshore-capable cruisers — and at $24K, she immediately demanded a closer look. At the time of filming, she remains available. She far exceeded expectations. EP 146 Every year, the sailing world celebrates the Boat of the Year winners — innovative designs, cutting-edge technology, and eye-watering price tags. But here’s the question most sailors quietly ask: do you really need a brand-new boat to go sailing? In this episode of BoatFools Sailing, we take five 2026 Boat of the Year winners and compare them—loosely and honestly—to used sailboats you could buy for roughly half the price. This Southern Cross 28 Cutter, MAGIC, first appeared on a BoatFools Sailing Top 10 Countdown back in early 2023. That summer, Canadian Ken and I spotted her again—this time sold and sitting proudly on the docks in Rockland, Maine. We were smitten. Then we saw her again… In winter storage. And now—finally—we’re aboard filming her. Destiny? Kismet? Who knows. What we do know is this: MAGIC is an absolute stunner. Originally listed in 2023 for $32,500, her current owner has since invested over $84,000 in upgrades, transforming her into what may be one of the best-equipped pocket bluewater cruisers on the market today—now offered at just $39,500. At only 28 feet, this Southern Cross Cutter punches way above her weight. #boatfoolssailing #IsSailingDead #sailing #boatbuying Is SAILING Dead? The 5 Things You Must Know Before Buying a Boat! Is sailing dead? From the empty docks and rising costs, it can feel that way. But sailing isn’t dead — access to sailing has changed. And if you don’t understand the new rules, buying a boat can quickly turn into frustration, regret, or worse. In this episode of BoatFools Sailing, we cut through the noise and myths surrounding modern boat ownership and lay out the five non-negotiables you must have figured out before buying a sailboat — whether you’re a first-time buyer, returning sailor, or dreaming of cruising “someday.” These are not boat specs. They’re not brand recommendations. They’re the real-world logistics that determine whether sailing becomes a joy — or a burden. ⚓ The 5 Things You MUST Know Before Buying a Boat 1️⃣ Where You Will Store Your Boat? Before you even look at listings, you must know where the boat will live. Marina slips, moorings, yards, and backyard storage all come with costs, availability issues, and restrictions. Storage is often the true limiting factor — not the boat itself. 2️⃣ Where You Will Moor Your Boat? Moorings are scarce, waitlists are long, and rules vary wildly by harbor. Knowing whether you’ll be on a mooring, dock, or trailer — and how secure that arrangement really is — is foundational to successful ownership. 3️⃣ How You Will Move Your Boat? This has two critical parts: A) How will you get the boat from the purchase location to your home port? B) How will you move it seasonally if you must haul out — to a storage yard or even your own backyard? Transportation costs and logistics routinely surprise new buyers. We explain what to think about before you buy. 4️⃣ Why a Survey Is Not Optional A proper marine survey protects you financially, helps with insurance, and reveals issues you can’t see dockside. Skipping a survey is one of the fastest ways to turn a “good deal” into a bad one. 5️⃣ Insurance: It’s Not the Boat — It’s You Insurance is one of the most misunderstood parts of boat ownership. Age of the boat matters far less than your experience, your plan, and your preparedness. We explain what insurers actually care about — and how to avoid dead ends. Sailing isn’t dead. But buying the wrong boat, in the wrong place, without a plan — will make it feel that way. This episode is about helping you get it right. Real boats, real people, real fun! #boatfoolssailing #sailing #pocketcruiser Is This the PERFECT Pocket Cruiser? $8,000 Mint Bayfield 25 Sailboat | Full Tour On a blustery winter day in coastal Maine, with temperatures hovering around 15°F, I took a solo ferry trip to Islesboro to inspect what may be one of the best pocket cruiser sailboat finds under $10,000 — a 1986 Bayfield 25 that’s been in indoor storage since 2018. This Bayfield 25 is being sold by an estate, with an asking price of $8,000, and aside from the unknown condition of the Yanmar diesel, the boat appears to be a genuine time capsule — clean, original, and remarkably well preserved. Unfortunately, Canadian Ken and Captain Q (Captain Kew) couldn’t make this one, making it a true solo BoatFools mission: winter ferry schedules, cold decks, and a classic little cruiser hiding on a Maine island. In this video, I do a full walk-through and honest review of the Bayfield 25, covering condition, layout, design, performance, value, and what to watch out for before buying. Finding one in this level of preservation — on an island, in winter, at the low end of the price range — raises a lot of interesting questions about value. Think of this episode as both a boat tour and a practical lesson in how to assess a small cruising sailboat. If you’re shopping for a pocket cruiser, a shoal-draft Maine cruiser, or a classic sailboat under $10,000, this is one you’ll want to see. - Drop your thoughts in the comments — would you take the winter ferry for a boat like this? And as always… get a survey. See you next time! -BoatFools Sailing Team
