here’s something unsettling about seeing a standing wave across the cut you’re about to enter. I start out exploring the shallow southern shoreline of Stocking Island on my paddleboard, soaking up the clear water before we head offshore. Dave shows us how he rigs the spinnaker, and once it’s flying properly we get one of those beautiful sailing stretches that makes all the work worthwhile. Rudder Cut changes the mood. Murky water is bad enough when you know there could be something nearby. Finding out later just how curious the local sharks can be doesn’t help. We’re at Sand Dollar Beach in Elizabeth Harbour, where murky water makes my anchor dive a little more uncomfortable than usual. We snorkel what was once an amazing reef at Moriah Harbour Cay National Park and find clear signs that parts of it are dying off. There are still plenty of beautiful fish and turtles moving through the reef, along with a Great Barracuda hanging out at the far end. The real surprise comes when a curious blacktip shark decides to check us out. We were running hot in Georgetown, and so were the Volvos. The only thing harder than cooling ourselves off was finding coolant for the engines. We’re anchored in Kidd’s Cove, searching Georgetown for strangely elusive coolant for our long-suffering Volvo Penta diesels. Back aboard Dark Angel, we install the new furling line we found at Brown’s Marine and the pennant halyards we sourced at Top to Bottom. We move to Flip Flop Beach, where I dive the anchor in very shallow water and discover the holding is far from ideal, but good enough for the day. With the heat building inside our un-air-conditioned boat, we take the paddleboards along the shoreline to the northern tip of Stocking Island. The sun is hot, the water is warm, and the Exumas are gorgeous. There are some things you expect to find while diving the anchor. A sea floor covered in pulsing jellyfish brains isn't one of them. We’re at Sand Dollar Beach, where I make a creepy discovery while diving the anchor in murkier than usual water. Upside-down jellyfish called Cassiopea are anchored to the sea floor, pulsing away and looking disturbingly like jellyfish brains. We pull the broken port saildrive shifter cable so we can measure it for replacement, take a break at stunning Sand Dollar Beach and paddleboard along the shoreline. Dave also repairs a sabotaged swing on the beach. A run to Browns Marine takes us through crazy shallow water and a twisted route in search of boat parts, oil, coolant and rope. A beautiful, easy passage into the Exumas ends with Dark Angel threading her way through shallow water, coral and rocks. We cruise from Long Island to Hog Cay Cut in the Exumas. Dave pulls the new port engine raw water pump to track down an oil leak and discovers the supplied O-ring was oversized, crushed and damaged. An O-ring salvaged from the old pump gets us back together. We raise the main and genoa hoping for enough wind to sail the 16-hour passage, but spend most of it motor sailing through calm seas and absolutely gorgeous water. Hog Cay Cut is a very different kind of beautiful. Arriving a couple of hours after high tide means I am on the bow watching the shallow water for coral and rocks as we thread Dark Angel through the narrow cut. When the inverter says the batteries are critically low and the battery BMS says they're fine, somebody is sending mixed signals. We duck out of Jamaica Bay with squalls rolling in and a broken saildrive shifter cable adding to the excitement as we beat into wind, rain and waves toward Long Island. With the anchor dropped and checked in the crystal clear water of Gordon's Bay, yet another barracuda keeps an eye on Lisa. We borrow a friend's truck and search Long Island for 15W40 oil for our weeping engine. A power failure sends Captain Dave into repair mode when the inverter reports critically low batteries while the battery BMS insists they're fine. By the time we left Great Inagua, the water coming aboard was about to become the least of our fluid problems. We leave Great Inagua for the 20 hour hop to Crooked Acklins, but not before removing our failed Starlink system and properly installing our new to us Starlink Mini. Wind and waves at Great Inagua send water over the stern and into the cockpit, and once we're underway, the ongoing oil issue with our port engine creates another problem when we start running short on diesel. We eventually make it into Jamaica Bay, where better weather and an anchor dive confirm we're well hooked, giving us a chance to settle in and relax for a couple of days. Leaving the Dominican Republic was supposed to be a simple check-out, but a lost weather window, dead communications, and an engine leak overnight turned a routine passage into a battle to keep the water on the outside. Bureaucratic hurdles delay our clearance out of the Dominican Republic, forcing us to watch our ideal weather window slip away. On the morning we finally cast off, our Starlink completely fails, leaving us without offshore connectivity. We are finally putting in the last piece of our lightning-fried electronics to get our AIS online and broadcast our position, before dropping the tools to go explore a massive beach resort that was completely abandoned back in the nineties. On our mooring in Luperon, we install our new AIS to replace the final piece of our lightning fried electronics. The installation includes the helm station mount, wiring, and antennas. Replacing a missing windex is one thing, but the real project this time was putting our imaginations to work in the cockpit to get our new Weber barbecue perfectly mounted on the back rail. We replace our missing windex and use a borescope to try to locate the obstruction blocking our wind instrument wire inside the mast. After weeks of mechanical grit and a completely torn-down engine room, everything comes down to a single turn of the key. Waking up in the pitch black to thirty-knot winds is stressful enough, but the radio alert about loose boats drifting through the dark mooring field puts everyone on immediate deck watch. Cleaning months of diesel grease off a valve cover is tedious work, but it turns out a little rhythm in the galley can change the whole mood of a heavy maintenance project. It is one thing to have a machined cylinder head delivered to the boat, but it is another thing entirely to find the surface contaminated before it even touches the block. I am prepping the engine block for our newly machined cylinder head while Dave works to clean up the contamination he found upon unwrapping it. He gets the surface ready using a razor blade and nipple remover so we can move forward with the rebuild. We reassemble the top of the engine and torque the head bolts in sequence to the exact Volvo Penta MD2030 specs. After the intensity of the mechanical work, finishing the assembly is the perfect excuse to bake a cake in our countertop oven.
