The SS Nieuw Amsterdam, launched in 1937 by the Holland America Line, quickly became one of the most beloved ocean liners to ever sail the Atlantic. The answer depends less on which boat is “better” and more on what kind of experience you want during your week in the islands. A simple way to think about it is this: sail a monohull at home, but for a BVI vacation, many people will be happier on a catamaran. That is not a hard rule. The start of the Vendée Arctique may have been a quiet affair when the fleet set off from les Sables d'Olonne on Sunday 7 June, but it didn't take long for the pain, stress, sea sickness and breakdowns to start.
