Should you charter a catamaran or a monohull in the British Virgin Islands? ๐ https://www.nauticed.org This is one of the most common questions people ask before planning a BVI bareboat charter or sailing vacation. The answer depends less on which boat is โbetterโ and more on what kind of experience you want during your week in the islands. A simple way to think about it is this: sail a monohull at home, but for a BVI vacation, many people will be happier on a catamaran. That is not a hard rule. If you only have a few people aboard, a monohull may have plenty of space and can be a great choice. But if you are bringing family, friends, kids, or a larger crew, a catamaran gives everyone more room to spread out. The BVI is a vacation-focused cruising ground. You are usually moving between anchorages, mooring fields, beaches, snorkeling spots, beach bars, and short island hops. So before choosing the boat, ask yourself what kind of trip you actually want. Are you coming to the BVI for a relaxed sailing vacation, or are you looking for a more traditional sailing experience with more heel, more feel, and more performance upwind? A catamaran is like bringing a floating condo with you. You get more deck space, more privacy, more room in the cabins and salon, and better visibility from inside the boat. You are not tucked down below in the hull the same way you are on many monohulls. For a weeklong BVI charter, that extra space can make a big difference. A monohull can still be a great option, especially for smaller crews or sailors who really want that classic sailing feel. We Found a Secret Portal to the Ocean... Hidden in the Jungle ๐ด๐ Just when we thought we had seen it all in the Solomon Islands, our friend John Wayne told us about a place that isn't on any map. To get there, we had to leave the comfort of the boat and hike deep into the interior of the island. It was a brutal trekโbarefoot over razor-sharp limestone and through dense, humid bush where the trail frequently disappeared. But the struggle was forgotten the moment the earth opened up beneath us to reveal The Blue Hole. This isn't just a swimming hole; itโs a geological wonder. Mapped by specialist divers, this deep blue eye in the jungle connects to a network of ten underwater caverns that tunnel through the island's bedrock, eventually exiting into the open sea. It is a silent, sacred world home only to fruit bats and a legendary giant eel that guards the depths. To finish our time on the island, we visit a site dedicated to Kesico, the Fishing God. Half-human and half-frigate bird, Kesico is said to have sat upon these rocks, observing the tides and seasons to grant his people the bounty of the sea. Didn't think you could get on the plane with an electric outboard? Well think again. We've just done a full test of the ePropulsion Spirit 2 and we can report that this is not an upgrade from the Spirit 1, it's an entirely different beast. We've used electric outboards as the main motor for our tender for 5 years now. There are pro's and cons between electric and petrol outboards of course, but for us the electric option has been hands down the best and now it's got much, much better. Really the only thing a petrol outboard has over an electric one is speed and range. Well not any more. The job of a yacht tender is to get you from the boat to shore, the electric outboards do that reliably, they are silently have no fumes and now they also do it as quickly. Yes if you want to go on an expedition for 20nm on the plane then you will need a petrol outboard, but to do that well it has to be at least 15hp even for two people in a small dinghy. So if you've got something like a large catamaran that can take big dinghy with outboard on a strong pair of davits then it might make sense. But if what you're doing at the moment is operating a 3, 5, or even 10hp petrol outboard then you have the worst of all worlds. You have the unreliability, the service schedule the weight, the smell and the noise and you have no more real power than the new Spirit 2. Just to clarify at the end we used 82% of the battery in the longevity test, so down to 18%, watching it back it may have not been clear the way I said it. Obviously I can't fit every detail into one short video but do ask questions in the comments if anything is unclear. There are some other good features I didn't cover because they are not that relevant for a tender, but if you want a Spirit 2 for something like a trailer sailer then it has features like a lock to keep it straight and regen as standard to charge while you sail.. At dawn, I raise anchor and set sail aboard Mirage for a 40+ mile solo passage to West End, Bahamas - the northernmost inhabited point of the Bahamian islands and my last stop before crossing the Gulf Stream. The day starts calm and beautiful, with light wind, flat water, and those perfect Bahamas colors all around me. As the wind shifts aft, I try different sail setups: mainsail only, staysail, and eventually wing-on-wing. Mirage comes alive โ 6, 7, then 8.5โ10 knots as I make excellent time toward Old Bahama Bay. Welcome back to another episode of WE|Sail. EPISODE 344 Cyclone Vaianu has passed. The lines are off the dock. And after weeks of waiting โ we are finally underway. We're leaving Vuda Marina in Nadi and pointing VA east. 300 miles to the Lau Islands, Fiji's most remote island group. We've been trying to get here for weeks. A cyclone had other ideas. But today the wind is blowing the right direction for the first time in a long time โ the tail end of the same storm that kept us pinned down โ and we are not wasting it. Getting out past the barrier reef is the first test. The seas are sloppy, leftover swell from the cyclone mixing with fresh wind chop โ it's not comfortable, but we've got sails up and we're moving. And within the first few miles of open ocean, the fishing rod goes off. Fresh tuna. Day one. We'll take it. This episode is the departure โ the relief, the rough first hours, and the start of what we hope is one of the most remote and rewarding sails of our seven years out here. In this episode of the Rogue Rigger I take you on board the Farr 400 Astra for a race down the coast to Monterey in the Spinnaker Cup. This is the first leg of three of the California Offshore Race Week.

After exploring and surfing Madagascar, we thought we were finally ready to leave. We had a weather window, a plan, and our sights set on South Africa. But before we could cross the Mozambique Channel, we first had to convince the local authorities to let us go. What should have been a routine checkout quickly turned into one of the most frustrating experiences we've encountered during our years of sailing around the world. With tensions rising, a weather window closing, and the Mozambique Channel waiting for us on the other side, all we wanted was our paperwork and a clear path south. Once underway, we faced one of the most challenging stretches of water in the world as we sailed from Madagascar towards Richards Bay, South Africa aboard our Leopard 46 catamaran, Happy Days. Someone at the dock pointed at the mast on this Bali 5.2 and asked Steele: "Is that mast supposed to be raked back that much?" It's a question the Catamaran Gurus' team hears constantly, at boat shows, on the docks, and from prospective buyers during walkthroughs. The answer goes deeper than most people expect, all the way back to Catana Group and their 30+ year history building performance racing catamarans. The Bali 5.2's mast is raked aft approximately 4 to 5 degrees. That's well beyond the 1 to 2 degrees found on most production cruising catamarans. It's a deliberate engineering decision that changes how the boat performs under sail. The raked mast increases forestay tension, which tightens the luff (the front edge of the sail). A tighter luff creates a flatter, more aerodynamic sail entry that lets the boat cut into the wind more efficiently rather than being pushed sideways. This is especially important when sailing upwind (pointing), which is the most demanding point of sail for any cruising catamaran. What does it do to the sail shape? With the mast tilted aft, the leech (the back edge of the sail) becomes longer. A longer leech allows excess wind pressure to spill cleanly off the trailing edge instead of loading up the rig. This reduces drag, lowers strain on the rigging, and gives the helmsman better control in variable wind conditions. The result is a sail that behaves more like an efficient airfoil and less like a parachute. How does it reduce bow pitching? Mast rake shifts the center of effort (the point where all sail forces converge) further aft. This redistributes the load so the bow doesn't get pulled down into oncoming waves as aggressively. The result is less of that uncomfortable rocking motion (bow pitching) that plagues many cruising catamarans in choppy conditions. What is the Catana Group connection?
