Historsea Channel: @Historsea What are the best small sailboats you can actually live on? In this episode, we look at three small cruising sailboats under 30 feet that make real sense as tiny liveaboard boats: the Albin Vega 27, Pacific Seacraft Dana 24, and Cape Dory 28. These are not just weekend campers with sails. They are small sailboats with real cruising reputations, practical layouts, manageable systems, and enough capability to make the liveaboard dream feel possible. We compare each boat for real-world liveaboard use, including interior space, storage, sailing ability, simplicity, cost, comfort, and the compromises that come with living aboard a small sailboat. Whether you are dreaming about affordable cruising, downsizing to a tiny floating home, or shopping for a pocket cruiser you can actually sail and live on, these three boats show how small a sailboat can be before the dream starts getting a little too cozy. SailGP returned to Portsmouth in near-perfect conditions—sunshine, strong breeze, short rigs and spectacular foiling just metres from the shoreline. But while the weather looked familiar, the racing told a very different story. The new split-fleet format delivered tighter competition and further evidence that the days of a handful of dominant teams may be over. We look back at the key moments from both days of racing, the performances that mattered most, and who came out on top in the final. We also talk to Los Gallos driver Diego Botin and the man at the wheel aboard Artemis, Nathan Outteridge who both share their thoughts on the new format and the increasingly competitive SailGP fleet. Plus, we have another helping of Docktalk.

Watch the full episode here: https://youtu.be/Ib2ktCSqMr4 This week's project is SO satisfying on so many levels! When we first started diving into the nitty gritty details of the design of Delos 2.0, this was actually one of our first changes that we started dreaming of. And now 2 years later, we finally get to watch our rainwater catchment system come to life. In some ways, it's a simple project. Big roof = big surface to collect water. But when it came time to make it super functional and hygienic, adding in filters and various pumps so we can direct the water exactly where we want it to go....things started to get interesting! Definitely had so much fun getting creative with this one, and we can't wait to put it to the test in the middle of a squall in the open ocean one day! Owning a brand-new hybrid-electric yacht has been exciting—but it has also come with a much steeper learning curve than expected. In this podcast, I give an honest update on my first few weeks aboard the Island Spirit 525e. I walk through the technical issues we’ve experienced so far, including repeated generator faults, problems within the drive-battery system, charging limitations, and some of the other complications that have interrupted our cruising through Thailand. I explain what happened, what the technicians and builder have done to investigate the problems, and why the generator and battery systems are so important on a yacht designed around electric propulsion. This isn’t meant to attack anyone or declare the entire concept a failure. New boats often have issues, and this yacht uses relatively new and complex technology. I simply want to be transparent with the audience about the good, the bad, and the decisions still ahead. Do we continue improving the hybrid system, make major changes, or consider a more conventional setup? At this point, I’m keeping an open mind. KETCHUP is a well-equipped Hinckley Sou’wester 51 that combines classic McCurdy & Rhodes blue water pedigree with significant recent upgrades, including refreshed decks, new sails, updated batteries, carbon fiber spar technology, and modern cruising systems. Presented in Stars and Stripes Blue with traditional Hinckley brightwork, she offers the scale, comfort, and offshore capability expected of this respected American cruising design. Her moderate overhangs, balanced sail plan, and substantial construction make her an attractive choice for sailors seeking a capable cruising yacht that remains rewarding to sail. Thoughtful ownership and meaningful upgrades—including a Hall carbon fiber mast with in-mast furling, full repaint of the decks, cockpit, and cabin tops, Navtec rod rigging, updated deck finishes, and refreshed cruising equipment—help present her as a serious, well-cared-for Hinckley brokerage offering. After a great couple of nights in Hua Hin, we continued sailing south through the Gulf of Thailand. The first day couldn’t have gone much better—we found a quiet village, went ashore for dinner, and gave the dogs some time to explore. But the next morning, things started going wrong. Our generator developed problems, which meant we could no longer recharge the boat’s batteries as they continued to drain. We had to change course and find somewhere calm and protected where we could troubleshoot the electrical system. Fortunately, the bay we pulled into turned out to be one of the most beautiful places we’ve found in Thailand. It was absolute paradise—but even in paradise, the boat still needed to be fixed. This is the reality of cruising: incredible destinations, unexpected problems, and constantly adapting when things don’t go according to plan. Crossing the Gulf of Alaska never gets easier. No matter how many times we've made this passage, there's always a moment when we leave the protection of inside waters, point the bow toward open water, and realize there's no turning back. This would be our fourth Gulf of Alaska crossing aboard in just over two years, and our second aboard our 80-foot steel schooner, Alaskan Gypsy. We've learned a lot over the years, but experience doesn't erase respect for the ocean. Every unusual engine sound gets your attention. Every weather update matters. Every decision feels just a little bigger. Over the next two and a half days, we motor-sail nearly 500 miles across the Gulf of Alaska on our way back to Southeast Alaska. Along the way we finally get the sails drawing, bake cookies in the middle of the ocean, troubleshoot a mysterious engine vibration, watch for humpback whales and orcas, dodge floating debris, and settle into the unique rhythm that only life offshore can create. Somewhere out there, the nervous energy begins to change. The constant distractions of everyday life disappear. The horizon stretches in every direction. The wilderness has a way of slowing everything down, reminding us how small we are while making life somehow feel bigger at the same time. When the mountains of Southeast Alaska finally rise from the horizon, it's more than reaching a destination. It's relief, gratitude, and another reminder of why we continue making these crossings despite the nerves. If you're new here, welcome aboard! We live full-time on our 80-foot steel schooner, sharing the realities of life at sea, remote Alaska, wildlife encounters, boat projects, and the remarkable people and places we discover along the way. ⚓ Thanks for sailing with us. Choosing and Securing Seat Cushions - https://www.practical-sailor.com/belowdecks-amenities/choosing-and-securing-seat-cushions/ The Beneteau Oceanis 34.1 is one of the most interesting modern cruising sailboats in the 34-foot range. With twin helms, an open transom, a bright cruising interior, three keel options, and a no-backstay rig, this compact Beneteau packs a surprising amount of performance and livability into a boat that still makes sense for one person, a couple, or a small family. In this Practical Sailor review, we take a close look at the Oceanis 34.1 and ask whether it is just another comfortable production cruiser, or a fast sailboat that can actually deliver real sailing fun. We cover the Beneteau Oceanis 34.1’s design, cockpit layout, keel options, rig, sail handling, cruising comfort, price, and buyer considerations. If you are shopping for a modern cruising sailboat, a sailboat for couples, a manageable boat for solo sailing, or a fast coastal cruiser that still has room to spend weekends aboard, the Oceanis 34.1 deserves a serious look. But with prices often reaching into the mid-$200,000 to low-$300,000 range, the real question is whether this small Beneteau cruiser gives you enough performance, comfort, and practicality to justify the cost. Practical Sailor is your trusted resource for reviews of sailboats and sailing gear. https://www.practical-sailor.com Chat with us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/PracticalSailor/

The reef definitely delivered for us this trip with a good haul of coral trout. So that called for Jason's fabulous coconut and lime dish that really suits a succulent fish like a coral trout. It helped that we'd secured some coconuts while at Middle Percy Island so we had fresh coconut to add to the dish, but a good desiccated or shaved coconut is also good to add if you have it. If there's no trout at hand, this dish also works well with a firm white fleshed fish, or even chicken. Thanks for watching. Hope you get to make this too. Discover the 3 main types of mooring pennants: single, double, and Y pennants. A single pennant features an eye or thimble on one end and a soft eye for your vessel on the other. #sailing #boating #boatgear #sailinggear #yacht

We discuss a common scenario for boat owners: having a vessel older than CE regulations but with a newer engine. This video provides a detailed legal analysis of such situations, especially concerning European Union standards. We explore the regulatory affairs surrounding boat certification and offer legal advice on navigating these complexities. Understanding the law is essential for smooth shipping operations.

After months stuck in the boatyard, we finally cross from Fort Lauderdale to Bimini, Bahamas. Along the way we dodge a waterspout, snorkel crystal-clear reefs, swim with nurse sharks, catch barracuda... and discover a mysterious underwater box that we can't open. Armed with a pry bar, I dive down and try everything I can to open it... but whatever is inside stays a mystery. Luckily, we saved the GPS coordinates. We'll be back. 👍 If you enjoyed the adventure, subscribe and come along as we continue sailing our fixer-upper catamaran through the Bahamas and beyond. Check out our buddy boat @NOBADWeatherFam to see more treasure hunter Josh 😁

It was a breezy start for the 85 teams competing in the Fireball Worlds, with sailors from 14 countries and 4 continents taking part. Here's a brief montage of the action in Tor Bay. Plenty of my photos can be found on flickr at https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjCZVm6 and the full report will be on Sail-World.com and YachtsandYachting.com later. The Fireball Worlds are taking place at the Royal Torbay Yacht Club, and are sponsored by P&B Sails, North Sails, Allen Brothers, Robline, WEST SYSTEM Pro-Set, Windermark and Wetsuit Outlet. I find my way ashore to St. Andrews State Park, where I can land the dinghy, dump trash, take on water, and ride my bicycle to the Publix. So that's a win, even though it cost me $4 to get back into the park. Anyway, there's a window to head back south to Fort Meyers, and I'm going to take it as the weather here in January is a bit cold for my comfort.
