Ever looked at the night sky, noticed a super-bright star and wondered if it might be a planet? Here’s how to work planet coordinates, so that you can see what it is. If you’re far from the prime meridian (that’s at zero longitude, Greenwich, UK) you’ll have to do one more little sum because what you need to find is how far the planet is from your own meridian, not the one at Greenwich. If you’re in West longitude, you do this my subtracting your longitude from the Greenwich Hour Angle of the planet to find the Local Hour Angle, and off you go. Wondering what an hour angle is? Watch the video and find out. You’ll be enlightened, and if some of our neighbours in east longitude go on increasing their interference with GPS, we might all be glad of the knowledge. Tom Thorne from Ancasta Yacht Services talks through the essentials of antifouling and why it is such an important part of boat maintenance. He explains how keeping your hull properly antifouled helps extend the life of your boat, prevents weed growth that can clog bow thrusters, and reduces drag that would otherwise harm fuel efficiency. Tom also covers the key preparation work needed before applying antifoul. From ensuring the hull surface is ready, to wearing the correct protective gear such as overalls, a face mask, goggles and gloves. He highlights the tools required, including a sander, hoover and grip disc, and the importance of taping waterlines, shafts, engines and skin fittings. The video explores the different types of antifoul, noting that motorboats typically use harder formulations than sailing boats, and why applying two coats is generally recommended.

A new rod, rerouting the reverse cycle’s water intake, new water pump, drawers for our cabin, the riser saga continues, celebrating the new year, 2025 memories, comments and questions Steve rerouted the hose for the water intake flow of the reverse cycle air conditioner unit in our cabin and then...there was a horrible noise. Oh no, the water pump died! Luckily we had a spare 500 gallon an hour March pump on board. Whew! You can never have enough spare parts on a boat. With the new pump installed the reverse cycle is now keeping us warm and toasty. The Penn Senator reel that came with Isabella has a new friend. It’s a two piece Power Plus Trophy Class rod. Although the Senator could use a heavier rod, we’re going with the two piece because it’s much easier to store. Keep your fingers crossed, Steve just might catch us dinner one day. Storage is always an issue on boats and Isabella is no exception. The owners’ cabin has some storage space but needs more. So we ordered some drawers to address the matter. Steve put the unit together in no time and Karen’s so excited about having more storage we ordered another set of drawers. Boat life just keeps getting better. The saga of the engine riser continues. Steve is discovering more and more information on the subject including getting a $4,000 estimate to build a new riser. He’s still investigating better and less expensive options. We are determined to not have an exhaust leak in the engine room or anywhere else on Isabella without breaking the bank. If your hull only fits a 13" prop but your new setup requires 16–17", you’re stuck—and you can’t compensate with pitch. The passage across the Indian Ocean is when Idec Sport enjoyed a near-perfect run, and Sodebo could do nothing as they watched their lead reduced to under 200 nautical miles at times as they gybed to find the best winds, knowing that Joyon and his team back in 2016/17 covered the entire ocean on one gybe at incredible speed. Sodebo has though held the lead and set a new record to Cape Leeuwin of 17 days, 1 hour, and 17 minutes, over 5 and a half hours quicker than Idec’s time.
