Where did everybody go?! We're back in beautiful Warm Springs Bay on Baranof Island in Southeast Alaska, and something is very different this time. Just a few weeks ago, the docks were packed with boats and people enjoying the hot springs. Now, we've practically got the whole place to ourselves! And we can't quite figure out why everyone leaves when it's still so beautiful here. We spend nine wonderful days aboard Alaskan Gypsy, enjoying the quiet fall season, soaking in the public hot tubs overlooking the bay, hiking through the rainforest, searching for blueberries, and visiting the incredible natural hot springs beside a roaring river. We also take our little skiff exploring through a narrow, rocky passage into a sheltered bay. With the tide dropping, we have to keep an eye on the water if we want to make it back out! There's plenty of rain, a little sunshine, some beautiful scenery, and lots of laughs along the way. We love exploring Southeast Alaska outside the busy summer season, and Warm Springs Bay is one of those places that keeps drawing us back. Dang, dang, dang!!! Isabella’s packing gland needs to be adjusted and our journey to Texas is now delayed. Steve’s been soaking the lock nut for the packing gland so that it can be loosened easily. The issue is that should that break or there start to be a leak; a whole lot of water would come rushing in and potentially sink the boat. Our current marina would be unable to pull us out of the water if that emergency situation should arise. We have an appointment at a larger marina early next week. Hopefully, this can be done quickly with Isabella still in the water and we can set another departure date soon. It’s not the Atlantic but we did take the dinghy out on the water. Karen pumped up the three chambers. It was great that the Mercury outboard started right up and out we went. Steve even revved the motor enough that we caused a small wake. Very small. On the starboard side of Isabella, we have a composite board support for jerry cans. After buying a few more cans, we added support on the port side. It’s pressure treated wood and may only be a temporary addition. However, now all the extra fuel can be safely secured onboard. We are taking the extra few days to locate additional anchorages and marinas with fuel docks that are accessible along the way on our move to Texas. Many of the channels are deep enough for us to navigate but sometimes the area getting to them is too shallow. Additionally, many of the anchorages and marina approaches are too shallow. Isabella has a 7-foot draft and we like to have at least 9 to 10 feet of water under her. We use the information on Waterway Guide to make a list and double check it with our chart plotters’ and other websites. Thank you for being with us and sharing our adventure. Isabella is a 1990/2010 sailing ketch with four private cabins, an engine room, a salon, a galley, and three heads with two separate shower stalls. Her fiberglass hull is designed for bluewater cruising, with an excellent capsize ratio of 1.68 and a very good comfort ratio of 42.19. She is equipped with Garmin and Raymarine electronics and hydraulic steering. Isabella was designed by naval architect Michel Bigoin, who also designed Phocea. Built in 1976, the 246-foot, four-masted steel schooner was considered the world’s largest private sailing yacht until 2004. We can't believe it's over. In January of 2025, we left the U.S. Virgin Islands, knowing New Zealand would be our final stop. So much has happened in that 14-month period when we left the boat in March of 2026. If you've been following along, seasons 8 and 9 of this channel document the entire voyage. This was a bucket list item for me since I was 13 years old and read a book about somebody doing the "coconut milk run" all the way to New Zealand. I can't believe how well this trip went and what a rewarding journey it was for Lennie and I. Both ourselves and the Kinetic performed well. We only planned to spend ONE DAY in Fort-de-France, Martinique… but things didn't exactly go as planned! What was supposed to be a quick stop turned into a much longer stay, and we quickly discovered why this colourful Caribbean city is such a convenient place for cruising families! With hurricane season approaching, it was time for some BIG provisioning! We stocked up on groceries and supplies, explored the lively streets of Fort-de-France, and discovered that this city has pretty much everything a sailor could need. But the biggest highlight for Coral and Kai? An amazing playground and the perfect place to zoom around on their scooters! Sometimes the simplest things make the kids the happiest, especially when you're growing up on a sailboat! After enjoying city life a little longer than expected, we finally raised anchor and enjoyed a short sail along Martinique's beautiful coastline to Petite Anse d'Arlet. What a change of scenery! From the bustling streets of Fort-de-France to a charming little fishing village with colourful boats, beautiful Caribbean scenery, and a laid-back atmosphere. Ficamos presos em Carneiros, em Pernambuco! ⛵ Entramos com a maré de lua, que proporcionava profundidade suficiente para o nosso veleiro Cabana, mas, quando a maré baixou, percebemos que não tínhamos profundidade para sair com segurança, considerando o nosso calado de 1,95 m. E agora? Só nos restava esperar a próxima mudança da lua! 😂 Enquanto o Cabana aguardava a maré certa, aproveitamos tudo o que esse paraíso do litoral pernambucano tem a oferecer: piscinas naturais, praias incríveis, passeios pelos bancos de areia e nossas cachorras correndo livres pelas ilhazinhas que aparecem na maré baixa. Também rolou churrasco a bordo de um catamarã com amigos, muita praia e momentos especiais da nossa vida a bordo. Mas nem tudo foi tranquilidade: mostramos também o incidente com outro veleiro que começou a garrar durante a ancoragem. Quando a profundidade finalmente melhorou, chegou a hora de deixar Carneiros para trás. Só que a saída ainda exigiu atenção, porque a maré continuava baixa! E a aventura não terminou por aí. From installing a brand-new Lofrans anchor windlass after our old one failed during a terrifying 45-knot squall, to picking up our new outboard, upgrading to an electric toilet (finally, no more pumping!), and installing speakers throughout Stella. Of course, what we thought would be a few simple jobs quickly turned into days of unexpected challenges, problem-solving, and a whole lot of patience. During the 1996 Vendée Globe, solo sailor Pete Goss turned back into a Southern Ocean storm to save a fellow competitor. French sailor Raphaël Dinelli’s yacht was sinking southwest of Australia. Goss battled upwind for two days, eventually reaching Dinelli in a liferaft and bringing him aboard Aqua Quorum. Both men survived. Their rescue became one of offshore sailing’s most extraordinary stories - and the beginning of a lasting friendship.
