In this video I share my personal experience comparing boat ownership in Spain and the United Kingdom — from registration, licences and insurance, to marinas, costs, salvage services and anchoring. This is not a technical or legal breakdown, but a practical comparison based on what I’ve personally experienced over the years. There are clear philosophical differences between both countries when it comes to regulation, responsibility and freedom — and that’s what I explore here. That said, this is only my opinion. I don’t have anywhere near the knowledge required to cover every aspect of this topic in depth. For example, I don’t know the anchorages in the south of England, which I understand are also excellent. The Scottish anchorages I’m familiar with are only being compared to the Mediterranean areas I know personally. I’m also aware that there are regions in Spain — such as Galicia — where anchoring conditions are much more similar to what we have here in the UK. So please take this video as a personal perspective, not a definitive guide. I would genuinely love to hear your thoughts in the comments. If you have experience boating in Spain, England, Scotland, Wales or elsewhere, please share it. Let’s use the comments to learn from each other and build a broader, more complete picture. 7 days with no land in sight. An 850-mile offshore sailing passage across the Atlantic from Gran Canaria to Cape Verde. We set sail from Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, to Mindelo, Cape Verde, with two additional crew members on board. For seven days there is no land in sight - just the open Atlantic Ocean, night watches, sailing and the rhythm of life aboard Zoé during a bluewater passage. This route from the Canary Islands to Cape Verde is a classic Atlantic offshore leg, yet it still brings uncertainty. Near the coast of Mauritania, an unidentified vessel followed us for hours, raising concerns about potential piracy at sea. Along the way, dolphins escort the boat multiple times, we catch a dorado, and after a full week of long-distance sailing, we finally sail into Mindelo at sunset in strong winds. 🌊 If you enjoy our videos and would like to support us, please consider joining our Patreon crew for real-time updates and exclusive contents, or support us on Ko-fi with a one-time donation. 35+ Knots Downwind to the Exumas. Wild sail from Long Island - big swell & a challenging Exumas Cut.
I woke up at 4:00 AM in Calabash Bay, Long Island, Bahamas — shaken awake by a strong ocean swell rolling in from the open sea. Overnight, the wind had shifted… and everything pointed to a serious weather increase during the day. By first light, several sailboats were preparing to leave the bay. Some chose the safety of a more protected anchorage along Long Island. A few of us committed to the crossing — bound for the Exumas. The day started with a steady 20 knots of wind, quickly building to 25–30 knots, and the sea state followed. Bigger waves, more motion, more energy — sailing was about to get interesting. With a True Wind Angle around 130°, at least it was a following sea — a proper downwind run. And Mirage absolutely flew. We held no less than 8 knots, with long stretches at 9 knots, and occasionally pushed past 10 knots SOG. A fast, powerful ride. Midway through the passage, the wind cranked up even more. Gusts exceeded 35 knots, forcing multiple reefs. This was one of the most intense and exciting parts of the sail. As the Exumas came into view, I realized the final challenge was still ahead. The island cuts were rough, with a big swell running straight through them. Entering the cut under sail, in 35+ knots of wind, waves exploding on nearby reefs — absolutely priceless sailing moments. About a mile before the anchorage, I rolled the sails, pushed through heavy rain and limited visibility, and finally dropped anchor safely near Sand Dollar Beach, Exumas. This place means something special to me. I was here five years ago, aboard my previous boat — a Beneteau 41.1 “Melody.” Different boat. Same sailor. Same sea. Some dots just connect themselves :) ⚓🌊
In this episode of Sailing and Cruising the East Coast of United States, host Bela Musits sits down with Tom Greaves, a longtime sailor and member of the Blue Water Sailing Club. Whether you are planning a coastal cruise or dreaming of offshore adventures, this conversation offers essential insights into navigating the beautiful but challenging waters of Maine and beyond. Sailing the Coast of Maine Tom shares his sailing evolution, from his first time on a Laser clone in Ontario to cruising the Maine coast on his 1984 Bristol 35.5. Sailing out of Casco Bay and Peaks Island, Tom discusses the realities of navigating this region, including dodging lobster pots and managing the notorious Maine fog. He emphasizes the importance of using both Radar and AIS when dealing with commercial traffic and lobster boats. Tom also reveals his favorite cruising destinations, including Penobscot Bay, Eggemoggin Reach, and the breathtaking Merchant Row near Stonington. For those planning a trip, Tom recommends visiting in August and utilizing the "Cruising Guide to the Maine Coast" by Curtis Rindlaub. The Marion to Bermuda Race Beyond coastal cruising, Tom details his experience preparing for and completing the 2023 Marion to Bermuda Race. He shares how the race served as a confidence builder and a catalyst for getting his boat offshore-ready, a process managed meticulously by his wife through a detailed preparation spreadsheet. The Blue Water Sailing Club & Future Generations Tom provides an inside look at the Blue Water Sailing Club, a "virtual" club founded in 1959 that focuses on cruising, camaraderie, and mentoring sailors for offshore events. The episode concludes with a thoughtful discussion on the importance of passing the torch to the next generation of sailors and creating opportunities for youth to experience offshore sailing. Key Topics in This Episode: Maine Cruising: Best destinations including Penobscot Bay and Isle au Haut. Navigation Safety: Tips for handling lobster pots and heavy fog. Offshore Preparation: Lessons learned from the Marion to Bermuda Race. Sailing Community: The benefits of joining the Blue Water Sailing Club. I think there were more shark habitants than people in the Ragged Islands (resident population of 70). Clear waters, abundant sea life, remote anchorages, and an amazing sailing community in Hog Cay.
Jason Carroll’s MOD70 Argo (USA) has taken Multihull Line Honours in the 2026 RORC Caribbean 600, completing the 600-mile course in an elapsed time of 01 Day 12 Hrs 01 Mins and 46 Secs after a ferocious, race-long battle with Jon Desmond’s MOD70 Final Final – Zoulou, just over three minutes behind. The two MOD70 trimarans were separated by just one mile at the finish off Fort Charlotte, Antigua - an extraordinary margin after nearly 600 miles of racing flat-out racing around 11 Caribbean islands. What unfolded was not simply a contest of speed, often exceeding 30 knots, but a shifting tactical duel from island to island which was decided by a smart move by Argo in the closing miles. #Caribbean600 #RORCracing

Yes, we live on a sailboat. Yes, we took a cruise on a boat to explore Doubtful Sound in New Zealand. This area was used to film Lord of the Rings. It was beautiful and reminded us of Princess Louis Inlet in Canada. We didn’t see as much wildlife as we had hoped to see but the water was calm and the weather was perfect.

This is how I like to experience a place I sail to. Meet a beautiful local to show you around. In this case she's Black Little Red Riding Hood. But first I test to see if Mana like being aboard Galopin to go places. So we go explore the nearby mangrove watery labyrinth. Where we are a little freaked out. Mana passed the test, Galopin likes her. We sail down river and get ambushed by a gang of dolphins. We can feel them push the boat. And we finally anchor in the dark of the night in the bend of a tributary. We’re greeted by a Frenchman who takes us to the bush bread baker. And then a settlement where we can get wifi. Even at night, Mana finds the key to the trail and leads us in her bright red dress. 00:00 Intro 00:25 She's not afraid 02:47 Friend from Dakar 03:54 Going deep down the delta 05:01 Dolphin attack 06:05 Into the bollong 06:29 Guide came knocking 07:17 Not in the city anymore 08:00 We're in the bush 09:03 Bush bread bakers 09:55 Chez Papis 11:11 Following the trail 13:37 Next week Some say it’s The Best Sailing Channel on YouTube! How do you design a boat that never stops moving? In the second episode of our 7-part docu-series, we take you behind the scenes of our new IMOCA build to explore the intersection of fluid dynamics and human endurance. Performance offshore isn't just about top speed, it’s about how the hull reacts to the sea and how the sailors react to the boat. ⛵️ This episode focuses on how these realities translate into design decisions. Hull shape, structure, and weight distribution define how the boat accelerates, lifts, and responds to the sea, while ergonomics determine how efficiently sailors can handle it over days and weeks at sea.

Welcome back to another episode of WE|Sail. In this episode, Warren tackles one of the biggest upgrades we've done on the boat, rewiring our entire nav panel, the brain of our electrical system. But living on a boat means your home is also your workshop. The salon becomes a wiring station, tools take over every surface, and there's no escape from the chaos until the job is done. Despite the temporary mess I have to live in, the guy does really amazing work. He's a jack of all trades, and honestly? I'm lucky to have him constantly making our home better and better. His skills are top notch. It's just the name of the game living on a boat—your home is the workshop until the job's done. And then... one component didn't work. Three weeks later, we're still waiting for the replacement part. So while we waited, we did what we do best...explored! Dingy adventures with black tip reef sharks, climbing trees for coconuts, unauthorized beaches (oops), and beach bonfires with friends. Because sitting around staring at a broken panel? Not really our style. This is boat life. Projects don't always go as planned, but the adventures make up for it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ⚓ Thanks for watching!
► This brand-new center-console model with a walkaround deck is based on the hull of the HammerCat 35CC (40 units built). However, the deck, side decks, and cabin/wheelhouse are entirely new, developed in close collaboration with Du Toit Yacht Design. ► The double-stepped hull with wave-piercing bow from the 35CC has been retained. Like all HammerCat models, the 35HH features a glass/epoxy construction using infusion technology, along with a carbon-fiber hardtop. The vertical structure of the cabin is made of aluminum. ► The standard equipment on the HammerCat 35HH is already very comprehensive, yet can be further enhanced with electronic packages, specific engine configurations, and additional comfort options. ► Our senior reporter Brieuc Maisonneuve had the opportunity to test this brand-new 2026 model - just nominated for the 2026 MOTY in Fort Lauderdale: “In fairly demanding conditions, with 20 knots of wind and a choppy sea driven by the Gulf Stream, I had the chance to try the ultra-powerful HammerCat 35HH with Peter Wiersema, one of the two founders of HammerYachts. This is undoubtedly a no-compromise powercat, weighing only 4 tons thanks to its meticulous construction. Powered by twin 400 hp Mercury V10 outboards, the 35HH is truly a powerhouse, featuring a hull that delivers excellent seakeeping. An ideal powercat for sport fishing - but not only!” ► Technical Specifications: Builder: Hammer Yachts Material: foam/epoxy sandwich and carbon reinforcements Length: 34’1” (10.4 m) Beam: 11’10” (3.6 m) Laden displacement: 8,800 lbs (4 t) Payload: 2,200 lbs (1 t) Water: 40 US gal (150 l) Fuel: 2 x 210 US gal (2 x 800 l) Max speed: 44 knots with 2 x 350 HP outboards Max powertrain: 850 HP (up to 4 engines) Price : US$ 598 000 ex-tax ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests!
