But leaving the boatyard proved more difficult than expected. Strong winds battered the Queensland coast for more than a week, preventing us from even hoisting our genoa before departure. When a weather window finally arrived, we slipped our lines and began the next chapter of our Australian cruising season. In this episode, we navigate the remarkable Great Sandy Strait not once, but twice. Heading south, we carefully work our way through the shallow waterways before experiencing one of every sailor’s least favourite sensations — touching the bottom. Later, we successfully enter the narrow and shallow waters of Garry’s Anchorage, where Adam makes a solo trip ashore despite concerns about what might be waiting in the bush. Dingoes. Snakes. Insects. Sharks. And perhaps even the possibility of a saltwater crocodile. After regrouping, we turn north again, carefully timing our passage across the Sheridan Flats before anchoring at Kingfisher Bay. There, we begin preparing for an unforgettable adventure ashore that we’ll share in the next episode. Join us as we leave the boatyard behind and return to the cruising life we love. ⛵ Boat: Tāiko (Chico 40) 📍 Location: Great Sandy Strait, Queensland, Australia 🌏 Sailing adventures around Australia and the South Pacific If you enjoy authentic sailing adventures, remote anchorages, boat life, cruising guides, and slow travel, we’d love to have you aboard. In this episode, we continue our Boatyard Blues series as Te Tāiko’s rudder rebuild enters its final stages. After discovering significant corrosion in our rudder stock, what began as a routine maintenance haul-out turned into one of our most stressful boat repairs we’ve faced since setting sail through the South Pacific. Join us as we make progress on the new rudder stock, complete electrical continuity testing to ensure the rudder is connected to a sacrificial anode for corrosion protection, continue antifouling the hull, reinstall the rudder, and prepare for splash day. Living aboard a sailboat means the adventure doesn’t stop when the sails come down. Behind every ocean passage, remote anchorage, and new destination is the maintenance, planning, and problem-solving that keeps a cruising yacht safe and seaworthy. Whether you enjoy sailboat refits, boatyard projects, yacht maintenance, liveaboard life, offshore sailing, cruising adventures, boat repairs, travel by sailboat, or simply following our journey aboard Te Tāiko, we hope you’ll come along for the ride. From New Zealand to the islands of the South Pacific and now Australia, we’re sharing both the highlights and the hard work that make this lifestyle possible. Our first Boatyard Blues episode is now live. After four years of sailing Te Tāiko in the South Pacific, it was time to finally drop the rudder. We knew there was always a possibility we’d find corrosion once everything came apart… What we thought would be a reasonably straightforward boat job quickly turned into something much bigger. This lifestyle gives us some incredible experiences, but there’s also a lot of maintenance, uncertainty, and problem solving that comes with living aboard and sailing long distances. Join us as we begin working through the next chapter of Te Tāiko’s journey in Australia. Link to video: Thanks for watching! Stewart Island brought us the full experience — and this final part of the journey brought it all together. In this episode, we leave North Arm Hut and walk out the final stretch of the Rakiura Track. After the challenge of the previous day, the track feels lighter, easier underfoot, and a chance to take in what we’ve just moved through. But our time here wasn’t quite over. The following day, we visit Ulva Island — a predator-free sanctuary where the forest feels completely different. Birds, movement, sound… a reminder of what these environments can be. This is the final part of our Rakiura Track journey — a walk out, a shift in perspective, and a glimpse of something hopeful. Whether you’re planning to walk it yourself, or simply enjoy experiencing these places from wherever you are, we hope this brings you a little closer to Stewart Island. Thanks for walking with us. In this episode, we continue into Day 2. The day begins with a steep climb straight from the hut, followed by our first real encounter with deep mud. Progress slows quickly, and what started as a physical challenge becomes something more. As we walk deeper into the forest, we begin to notice something we weren't expecting. This video shares our honest experience of Day 2 on Rakiura Track — the mud, the silence, and what it revealed us along the way. We're not experienced trampers — just travellers learning through the places we move through. And sometimes, it's the harder days that stay with you the most. As always, thanks for watching. Stewart Island has long felt remote, wild, and quietly legendary — a place many people dream of visiting. In this first episode of our Rakiura Track journey, we arrive on Stewart Island and take our first steps into the southern forest. Day one brought everything we had hoped for — wild coastline, deep bush, and that feeling of being far from the familiar. But even in those early steps, we began to notice things that stayed with us. This is Part 1 of our Stewart Island walking series — a story of first impressions, quiet forests, and what it means to truly walk through a landscape. We’re not experienced trampers — just travellers learning through the places we move through. And sometimes, walking slowly reveals more than we expect. Thanks for walking with us. Some forests feel different the moment you enter them. Time slows, sound softens, and the pace you arrived with begins to fall away. In this episode of our walking series, we explore Peel Forest in New Zealand — a place shaped not by urgency, but by patience. In this episode, we walk 17 km of the Queen Charlotte Track, from Ship Cove to the Furneaux Lodge. We arrive by road, water taxi, and finally on foot—reflecting on movement, fitness, and the quiet mental work that happens when the body becomes the vessel again. Ship Cove—known as Meretoto—has been a place of arrival for a long time. Long before tracks and water taxis, it offered shelter from the rough open sea. Captain Cook returned here on all of his New Zealand voyages in the 1770s, spending more time at this cove than anywhere else in Aotearoa. Sailing in, walking out—different centuries, similar intentions. To move through a place, not just past it. This video is part of our Walking New Zealand series, where we explore Aotearoa step by step, noticing what changes when we slow down and walk. 🎥 In this episode: Walking from Ship Cove to the Lodge (17 km) Water taxi journey through the Marlborough Sounds Reflections on fitness, mental resilience, and presence Why walking feels different from sailing or driving 🥾 Next walks in the series Giants of the forest in Peel Forest Three days walking Stewart Island / Rakiura Two weeks on Te Araroa with friends Thanks for walking with us. 🌏 More from Adam & Vicki #walkingnewzealand #queencharlottetrack #trampingnz #slowtravel #hikingnewzealand #landandsea #newzealandtravel #walkingfilm Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdH2L9SWYIbXONaZ1m9tR_Q/join As always, thanks for watching. After months of sailing, we’re back in New Zealand and exploring it the way we enjoy most — slowly, on foot. This video marks the beginning of our New Zealand walking chapter, starting with a coastal walk through Abel Tasman National Park, walking from Torrent Bay to Marahau along the Abel Tasman Coast Track. From water taxis and golden beaches to forest tracks, this walk felt like the perfect way to ease back into time outdoors and reconnect with the landscapes that make New Zealand so special. Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing more walks from around New Zealand — from coastal tracks to forest walks and remote islands — experiencing each place at a slower pace, one step at a time. From careful route planning to dodging humpback whales in Hervey Bay, this passage demanded patience, preparation, and constant awareness. In this video, we share how we chose our route south from Bundaberg, why depth matters so much through the Straits, and how tools like Queensland’s Beacon to Beacon Guide helped us navigate safely. From creating community-based tourism to using simple, clever solutions for everyday needs, Maewo reveals how much there is to learn from people living closely with the land. Join us on Pentecost Island, Vanuatu, where we spend time in the remote village of Loltong Bay — a place rich in culture, connection, and everyday resilience. When we arrived, we were welcomed by Matthew and Marie, who run the Loltong Yacht Club. They invited us to see how life unfolds here — walking through the village and gardens, learning about the tree of life (the coconut), and sharing a traditional island meal. From cultural food preparation and the tradition of kava, this experience was one of the most meaningful parts of our time in Vanuatu. If you’re drawn to authentic travel experiences, island culture, and the people who make these places so special, this episode is for you. 📍 Location: Loltong Bay, Pentecost Island, Vanuatu 🌊 Series: By Land and Sea – Life Beyond the Map 🎥 Watch next: Life in the Maskelyne Islands #Vanuatu #PentecostIsland #CulturalTravel #IslandLife #TravelVlog #OffTheBeatenPath #VanuatuCulture #ByLandAndSea We hope you enjoy it! We sailed into the Maskelyne Islands expecting to stay just a few days — but the days slipped quietly into weeks. What we found here touched us deeply: connection, kindness, and a way of life that is both effortful and full of purpose. From walking with the Chief through the forest gardens, to repairing boats on Independence Day, to being welcomed without expectation into a community rooted in tradition — this is a story that goes beyond sailing. It’s about what it means to live well, to share happiness, and to carry perspective forward. This video is told slowly, with time, because some places can’t be rushed. We hope it makes you feel something — because for us, it’s an experience we’ll carry for a very long time. ✨ Chapters: 0:00 A Story of Connection 0:40 An Island in the Maskelynes 2:13 Where Friendliness is a Way of Life 6:52 Sustained by the Land 10:48 Independence Day 14:55 Small Comforts, Big Difference 15:13 What We Will Take With Us 🔔 Subscribe for more stories from our sailing journey. 🌊 Support our journey and get exclusive stories. #Sailing #Vanuatu #TravelWithPurpose #MaskelyneIslands We hope you enjoy it! We’re starting our sail to the remote north of Vanuatu — leaving behind the bustle of Port Vila and heading toward quieter waters, coral anchorages, and a different pace of life. On our way to Nguna Island, we pass the wreck of Blue Gold — a 50-metre superyacht that now rests just offshore, a striking sight as we begin our northern journey. Nguna’s anchorage is surrounded by coral, so we take our time — carefully finding a patch of sand, diving on the chain, and making sure we’re anchored securely without harming the reef. In this episode: ⚓ Starting our journey to Vanuatu’s remote north 🛥️ Passing the grounded wreck of Blue Gold 🌊 Searching for a safe spot to anchor among coral 🐠 Diving to check the chain in 15 metres of clear water This is the kind of travel we live for — thoughtful, slow, and full of quiet moments that stay with you.
