Legendary sailor and author Lin Pardey joins me for a rare conversation about the extraordinary life she built with her late husband, Larry Pardey. Lin shares how she met Larry in 1965 and “ran away with him” after only three dates while he was building their 24-foot, 7-inch wooden cutter, Seraffyn. What began as a simple plan to go sailing became an 11-year circumnavigation and a lifetime of ocean adventures. We talk about sailing Seraffyn and Taleisin without an engine, navigating with a sextant, forecasting weather before modern electronics and exploring the world aboard small wooden boats. Lin also shares unforgettable stories from their voyages, including surviving a violent Atlantic storm by heaving to and later meeting another yacht whose crew’s first question was, “You got any rum?” While the other boat lost 400 miles running from the storm, Lin and Larry lost only about 20. She explains why they sailed west around the world “contrary to the wind because we’re contrary people,” what engine-free sailing taught them about teamwork and why Larry called heaving to “the sailor’s safety valve.” We also discuss their books, their famous philosophy—“Go Small, Go Simple, Go Now”—and the remarkable partnership that made their life together possible. Near the end, Lin shares a deeply moving memory from Larry’s final days. She asked whether he wished they were planning one more crazy adventure. Com 60 km de largura em alguns pontos, as margens somem no horizonte e a sensação é de estar em mar aberto. Esperávamos uma travessia dura, depois de medir ventos de 50 nós no píer, mas o que encontramos foi uma calmaria que nos levou a usar o motor em 90% do tempo. Navegar aqui exige atenção constante. É uma hidrovia com tráfego intenso de navios, incontáveis redes de pesca e muitos baixios que limitam as rotas. O vento, quando entra, vem com força total, sem morros para proteger. É o "mar de dentro" dos gaúchos, um corpo d'água doce com cheiro e cor próprios, que desafia e encanta na mesma medida. Essa viagem mais calma foi um ótimo teste para o motor Retipar, que manteve a temperatura e a pressão do óleo estáveis durante todo o percurso. Também foi a oportunidade de diagnosticar e consertar um mau contato na bússola do piloto automático. Mesmo na calmaria, sempre há o que fazer. Como digo, "para o pior que esteja o mar, uma refeição quente tem que ter." A bordo, a companhia dos fotógrafos Bruno e Fabiano, que registraram a jornada com um olhar único. Svaret är faktiskt: ungefär samma mat som vi äter hemma, vi har bara behövt tänka lite mer i förväg. 😄 Innan vi lämnade land förberedde vi mycket av maten för att göra vardagen ombord enklare. Vi älskar lagad, varm mat när vi seglar, så ofta blir det både lunch och middag från våra förberedda rätter. Sedan varierar vi dem genom att byta ut ingredienser och smaksättning. Till exempel har vi färska grönsaker som broccoli, paprika och zucchini i början av seglingen. När tiden går byter vi till sådant som håller längre, som vitkål och morötter. Nu är vi framme efter vår 30-dagarssegling och vi har fortfarande gott om mat kvar till flera olika måltider. Hungriga behöver vi alltså aldrig bli! 😉 Och när man är mätt och mår bra fattar man bra beslut vilket är viktigt till havs! 💙 Vilken av rätterna i filmerna hade du helst velat smaka? 🍲⛵

After one month in Cartagena, we sailed continue our eastbound passage. Cartagena is a beautiful town, but the water is perfect for barnacles to grow on boat. We usually sail a lots and grown has never been an issue, but one month sitting in the marina, we had 1 cm of growth . We “forgot” to clean it before settling off from Cartagena and that was a big rookie mistake. Our boat speed was 1-1.5 kt less that usual, so that makes day run 25-35 shorter! Luckily, we have Silic One anti foul paint , and cleaning the bottom was easy, but took time as I had to skindive / snorkel. In Kroatien wird meistens mit dem Heck zum Steg angelegt. Besonders bei stärkerem Wind entscheidet jedoch bereits die richtige Anfahrt darüber, ob das Manöver kontrolliert oder unnötig hektisch wird. In diesem Video zeige ich dir, wie du die Boxengasse passend zum Wind anfährst, die Yacht zügig aufstoppst und anschließend rückwärts gegen den Wind in die Lücke steuerst. Dabei geht es unter anderem um: ⚓ die richtige Anfahrtsrichtung ⚓ einen geeigneten Peilpunkt zum Aufstoppen ⚓ möglichst wenig Stillstand während der Drehung ⚓ ausreichend Gas für eine klare und kontrollierte Bewegung ⚓ rechtzeitiges Auskuppeln und Gegensteuern ⚓ kontrolliertes Abbremsen vor dem Steg Wichtig: Je stärker der Wind, desto entschlossener muss die Yacht bewegt werden. Zu wenig Fahrt und zu lange Manöverpausen führen häufig dazu, dass das Schiff seitlich vertrieben wird.
