We finish sailing across the Atlantic after 28 days at sea and arrive at Horta on the island of Faial, Azores. We had to sail very conservatively to protect the rigging so the journey ended up taking much longer than we had hoped. Getting into port with the rig still up was our priority, so we took the win 😁 We are very pleased to have made the crossing back to the Azores from the Caribbean. Nova Vita performed brilliantly the whole way. The rigging was repaired whilst we were here. We ordered 2 new inners which came from the mainland and which we fitted ourselves (a simple task). Horta is a great place to spend some time and it was good to relax here after the crossing.

Here we are again, in the middle of the ocean, trying to fix stuff! The inner shroud began to fail, the wind instrument packed up, and the engine decided to increase the amount of oil it was leaking. This is a normal part of sailing. When you sail offshore, you expect gear to fail. Whilst it can really lower the morale of the boat, it also provides you with an opportunity to learn. You learn about yourself and what you are capable of doing in a new situation. Is there a way to overcome this problem? How do you get the crew and boat safely to port? Our grand plan was a west-to-east crossing of the Atlantic, and we set sail with high hopes. Initially, everything was smooth sailing, but sometimes, sailing, like life, doesn't go according to plan. Our journey took an unexpected turn when we were battered by relentless rain and squalls. To make matters worse, our windvane broke—for the second time! With 2,200 nautical miles to the Azores and only 70 to return to St. Martin, the choice was clear. It's always better to face a delay than to tackle a major problem at sea. So, very disappointed, we turned back, getting drenched by a huge downpour on our return to St. Martin. We repaired the windvane, bought some new foul-weather gear, and found a better weather window. We leave the island of Antigua behind for an overnight sail to St Martin / Sint Maarten. The trip was only around 100 NM but was much slower than we thought as the forecast wind was much lighter. We made it to the anchorage at Baie de Marigot, St Martin where we stayed for a few days. There is plenty of room to anchor. It can be rolly at times. We spent around a week at anchor outside and then went into Geminga boatyard to redo the antifouling and change anodes. The boatyard owners are extremely helpful and friendly. We set off hoping for wind but had to motor the ENTIRE way to Guadeloupe. Arriving at Marina Bas du Fort we moored up stern-to, something we do very rarely. Luckily it went well and we did not damage the wind vane, which would have been a disaster. After one fairly sleepless night in Roseau, Dominica we head to Iles des Saintes, Guadeloupe. We had to motor almost halfway before we found great wind. Iles des Saintes is incredibly beautiful and very busy as a result. We loved it and would definitely like to come back. Sailing from St Pierre, Martinique to Roseau, Dominica on a beautiful sunny day. The first test of our new windvane from South Atlantic Self Steering. We bought the new one to replace the one we used across the Atlantic and which was 'tired' to say the least. We had a great sail across and picked up a mooring buoy in Roseau from 'Marcus' which was ECD50 for the night. We took the dinghy ashore and walked to the cruise ship terminal to check in. Very easy and ECD15. We take the dinghy to the dock and lock it securely. We decided to take a quick walk around Fort de France away from the normal touristy parts. It is a lovely interesting place with lots of character. The cathedral was incredible and well worth a visit. We enjoyed the covered market and bought our lunch from the boulangerie/patisserie just outside. There was a long queue of locals so we figured it must be good - we were right. Ham and cheese baguettes, pain au raisins, and a macaroon. Yum. Fort de France was very quiet the day we were there. There was almost no-one on the Malecon (seafront). We enjoyed our walk around Fort de France and a picnic on the seafront. The anchorage was very sheltered and has good holding and the dinghy dock is excellent. It is not our normal kind of video, but we keep getting asked "what do you do when you get somewhere?" Sailing from Le Marin, Martinique to Rodney Bay, St Lucia. We head to the marina in the hope that our spare parts are on the way. A beautiful day for sailing despite a couple of small squalls. The marina was easy to enter and the staff were very helpful. The check-in process was straightforward. We paid around £220 for 7 nights. Water and electricity was extra. Due to delays with delivery companies, waiting for the new windvane steering to arrive from Argentina, and then having to fit everything, we actually spent 37 days here! The final part of the crossing. After everything we went through on the trip we finally arrive in Fort de France, Martinique. We were exhausted but very happy to have completed a lifelong ambition. Things do not always go well. There are times when your limits will be tested, especially doing something like sailing across the Atlantic ocean. You never know what you are capable of if you are not tested. We did not film all of the drama because 1) we were too busy working through the problems to mess around with a camera, and 2) It's not our preferred style of video.
