This year looks a little different for Bart. Alongside his sailing campaign, he's adapting to life on the road with his wife Odile van Aanholt, Olympic champion and 49erFX sailor, and their newborn daughter Kato. Thankfully, family support is never far away, with grandparents joining the trip to help look after Kato while training and racing take priority. I cooked, I sailed, and I watched dolphins. I decided to try making pain au chocolat in my Omnia oven, and I may have just discovered a game changer for the Golden Globe Race. They definitely don’t look bakery-perfect, and there’s room for improvement, but they were absolutely delicious. Honestly, being able to bake fresh pastries in the middle of the ocean feels a little ridiculous. And then came the dolphins. So many dolphins. Jumping, surfing the bow wave, swimming alongside the boat as if they had somewhere important to be. One of those moments that instantly puts a smile on your face and makes you stop whatever you’re doing. It wasn’t an exciting day. It wasn’t a challenging day. It was just a really good day. And right now, that’s exactly what I wanted. France is getting closer, the final stretch is here, and soon it will be time to focus on the starting line. I signed the paperwork the day before, and now it is time to take her out for our first real sail and shakedown cruise. I was definitely a little nervous pulling out of the slip and leaving the marina, but once we raised the sails, the nerves faded and the dream finally started to feel real. We sailed over to Koh Larn, popped a bottle of champagne, poured a little out for Neptune, and dropped anchor in a busy bay full of tour boats and jet skis. By evening, things calmed down, so we lowered the new Highfield dinghy, took the dogs ashore for a beach walk, Olivia went for a swim, and we had dinner on the beach… until a rainstorm forced us to take shelter. After delaying for weather, sea-trialing the boat, preparing grab bags, checking systems, provisioning carefully, and doing so much right, Dusty and Helena still found themselves hundreds of miles offshore with both engines down, water coming aboard, rough weather building, and their catamaran eventually dismasted in the Pacific. This is the heartbreaking true sailing rescue story of a prepared cruising couple who had to abandon ship after their mast came down and their disabled catamaran was left vulnerable in heavy seas.
