It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #TheCruisingKiwis
My final UK event before heading back to Greece — and what a way to finish! This aquabike (400m swim + 22km bike) pushed me hard, especially battling a strong headwind on the ride. Despite that, I came away with a result I’m really proud of — including 🥇 1st in my age group. Considering that back in October I couldn’t have done any of this, it really shows how far things have come. Now the focus shifts to summer training, building up to a 15K run… and maybe even a Ironman 70.3 👀 Watch this space. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you found it informative or entertaining please give it a thumbs as it helps get YouTube to promote it outside of the existing subscribers. In this episode, we take our first trip off the season on our solar powered boat, heading toward the charming town of Vonitsa. Somehow it seems like we're faster this season, and I try to figure out why. Later with 35 knot winds on the way, we make the call to pull anchor and find safer shelter. What follows is a tense anchoring session, in a quiet bay that turns out to be one of the most special places we’ve ever visited… a bay filled with rays gliding beneath the surface. This is what we love most, turning electrons into real adventures.
A short little film of our time we experienced a thunder and lightening storm at anchor in Pendrell Sound. The bolts of lightening were definitely far too close for comfort but it was beautiful at the same time. We have so much sailing footage of British Columbia over the years and hope to bring it all to life on this channel in the near future. Thank you to everyone who has watched our channel over the years Lindsey and George
Join us on an epic multi-day trekking adventure through Chile’s legendary Torres del Paine National Park, deep in the heart of Patagonia. This isn’t our usual sailing journey - this time, we trade the ocean for mountains as we take on one of the most breathtaking destinations in the world. In our travel vlog, we trek almost 80km across the rugged Patagonian wilderness, facing freezing temperatures, brutal climbs, and ever-changing terrain. From the iconic Base Torres viewpoint, Cerro Paine Grande and Mirador Británicoto, to the unreal blue waters of Lake Nordenskjöld, every step brings jaw-dropping landscapes that look and feel unreal. This was one of the toughest but most rewarding adventures we’ve ever taken on, covering up to 26km a day on foot with 1000s of meters of elevation change. Patagonia pushed us to our limits, but it is the best thing we've ever done! What to expect in our biggest adventure yet: - Hiking the famous Torres del Paine W Trek (East to West) - Camping in the wild at Central, Frances & Pine Grande - Reaching Mirador Británico – a 360° panoramic viewpoint - Glacier lakes, suspension bridges & snow-covered peaks - Wildlife encounters & unexpected moments along the way - The reality of trekking in sub-zero conditions Our favourite adventure gear: 1. How important is an engine alignment and how do you do it? https://www.sailingnandji.com I couldn’t be happier with how this engine refit has come together. What was once a tired old engine room has been completely transformed. Fresh white bilge, crisp shiny new insulation, a refurbished generator and at the heart of it all, the new Yanmar 4JH110, bedded into her new home and ready to rumble. To make the engine work though, the shaft must be connected to the gearbox. This requires microscopic accuracy to protect the gearbox, engine mounts, cutlass bearing and importantly to remove vibration. With the experts laser aligning for perfect accuracy to meet warranty purposes, the next best thing to prevent all of the above and ensure years of reliability and protection, is to use a Sigma drive coupling by Brunton's. We finally got the new bow trampolines installed on the mooring in Luperón, and damn, they turned out even better than we expected. In this episode of Sailing Dark Angel, we're on our mooring in Luperón and we finally install the new bow trampolines. We pull off the old ones, then carefully tie off and tighten the new nets until everything sits just right. The new trampolines look and feel amazing. New bow trampolines done right, a big project finally crossed off the list, and that really good feeling when it all comes together on the boat. -------------------- 🌊 Sailing Dark Angel follows our real-life journey sailing the Caribbean aboard our Island Spirit catamaran, sharing the challenges, adventures, and everyday moments of liveaboard sailing life. -------------------- 🎥 Become part of the Crew on Patreon Without a Crew, a Ship Has No Direction. Laura Dekker, the youngest sailor ever to solo-circumnavigate the world, has been a MiniCat Ambassador for many years. Laura first sailed a borrowed MiniCat (M310) in Bora Bora whilkst on her voyage aged just 15. She soon had her own MiniCat on board her ketch as she continued her journey, happily having fun whenever at anchor. These days Laura and her partner Sander run the Laura Dekker World Sailing Foundation taking groups of youngsters on epic voyages, whilst teaching them life-skills and of course sailing skills. LDWSF have two MiniCats on board their boat Guppy and they are hugely popular with the crew being sailed and loved whenever there's an opportunity. ► The TH36 was the first (and last?) power catamaran from the American brand Four Winns and it caused quite a sensation when it was launched three years ago. Testers were unanimous about the seaworthiness of the hull designed by Marc Lombard Yacht Design and the pleasure of handling the new powercat, and it was named Multihull Of The Year in the Power category in 2023. ► The TH38, now wearing the Jeanneau badge, retains all the qualities of its predecessor and features a fully enclosed windshield, while maintaining the convenience of the central walkway. The modular sunbathing areas, outdoor galley, and two double cabins are still part of the inventory. ► For now, the foiling system tested on the previous TH36 no longer seems to be on the plans, but during our test sail off Cannes, we found that the boat offers exceptional handling with the twin 350 HP Mercury engine setup. A full test report will be published in a forthcoming issue! ► Technical Specifications: Builder: Four Winns Architect: Marc Lombard Yacht Design Hull length: 37’6” (11.42 m) Beam: 14’8” (4.47 m) Draft: 2‘/3’3” (0.6/0.98 m) Air draft: 13’11” (4.24 m) Displacement: 16,360 lbs (7.42 t) Fuel: 2 x 122 US gal (2 x 465 l) Water: 2 x 25 US gal (2 x 95 l) Engine: 2 x 300/350 HP outboards CE Category: B8/C12 Price: €470,100 ex-tax ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! In this episode, we prepare for two major weather systems, including one that could become a tropical cyclone. Anchored in the northern part of Tahanea among a maze of bommies, keeping our chain clear while rotating 180 degrees is no small task. Amid the chaos and stress, we find a rare moment of calm to jump in the water—and witness something truly incredible. We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. If you’ve been thinking about trying therapy, go to https://www.betterhelp.com/atticus to get 10% off your first month of therapy. We’re getting close to the end of the rough-in phase on our mountain home build, but before we can move on to insulation and drywall, we have to pass framing inspection — and that means a lot more than just framing. In this episode, I’m juggling a framing punch list, last-minute material ordering, trim paint, gas line planning, HVAC rough-in details, and porch roof design — all while trying not to slow down the siding crew. We work through inspector notes, install truss screws, frame the attic ladder opening, pressure test the gas line, solve an HVAC condensate drain conflict, plan dryer vent and bath fan duct runs, tighten anchor bolts, add framing straps, and finish a final interior wall. This is a real look at construction project management on a small house build: coordinating subcontractors, solving rough-in conflicts, handling framing inspection prep, and getting HVAC, gas, and framing approved so the build can keep moving.
