We’ve been at sea for 20 days, and we still have 3000 nautical miles ahead of us. But as tear our best sail in pirate waters it feels like we’ll never get there. Sailing across the Pacific Ocean is proving to be filled with many highs and lows. Being adrift in the doldrums, hasn’t been easy and it’s about to get a whole lot harder. This has been our toughest leg, so crossing the equator is a huge milestone. We’re currently sailing Australia’s deep south, it’s where coast meets the Southern Ocean. We’ve just arrived at the very last island before we set off for the biggest crossing we’ll undertake in our Australian circumnavigation, that’s the Great Australian Bight, 600 odd nautical miles of just ocean. It’s a daunting thought at the moment as the season is wrong for travelling west to east. So, we’re waiting for a low-pressure system to roll through, we need a strong enough storm that the wind temporarily swings westerly for us to cross. While waiting for such a forecast, we’re making the most of our the last of our time in Western Australia. Enjoying the episodes? My Mum and I have set off double-handed on one of the world’s toughest and most prestigious yacht races, the 2024 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. This year's 628 nautical mile ocean race was met with tragedy as the fleet sailed into gale-force winds. Two sailors' lives were lost, three boats were dismasted, and another sailor washed overboard. This race proves to be the most disastrous outcome since the tragic 1998 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. This documentary follows life from the rails and aboard Fika as we sail from Sydney to Hobart. Southern Ocean Sailing is not easy, but we've found ourselves anchored behind a rock, hanging out with a seal colony while we take cover from an electrical storm aboard our sailboat. This is truly remote sailing, and if there’s one thing we’ve learnt from our circumnavigation so far, it’s that we are most inspired and filled with complete bliss when we find ourselves witnessing untouched nature and its inhabitants thriving in such a harsh environment. In our sailing lap of Australia, there’s always a huge sense of achievement coming to the end of a coastline. But with the end of one, we stare down the barrel of another huge stretch of unfamiliar coast and waters, which may be the most treacherous yet. But then again, this coast has been nothing but gruelling. This week we’re plunging into the last stretch of Australia’s western coastline and sailing to our turning point into the Southern Ocean. We’re currently aboard our sailboat in Australia’s southwest corner, an area of wine vineyards, blustering winds and great white sharks.
