Today was a simple day. I cooked, I sailed, and I watched dolphins. I decided to try making pain au chocolat in my Omnia oven, and I may have just discovered a game changer for the Golden Globe Race. They definitely don’t look bakery-perfect, and there’s room for improvement, but they were absolutely delicious. Honestly, being able to bake fresh pastries in the middle of the ocean feels a little ridiculous. And then came the dolphins. So many dolphins. Jumping, surfing the bow wave, swimming alongside the boat as if they had somewhere important to be. One of those moments that instantly puts a smile on your face and makes you stop whatever you’re doing. It wasn’t an exciting day. It wasn’t a challenging day. It was just a really good day. After years of waiting, delays, setbacks, and one very long journey to get here, my new yacht is finally mine! I signed the paperwork the day before, and now it is time to take her out for our first real sail and shakedown cruise. I was definitely a little nervous pulling out of the slip and leaving the marina, but once we raised the sails, the nerves faded and the dream finally started to feel real. We sailed over to Koh Larn, popped a bottle of champagne, poured a little out for Neptune, and dropped anchor in a busy bay full of tour boats and jet skis. By evening, things calmed down, so we lowered the new Highfield dinghy, took the dogs ashore for a beach walk, Olivia went for a swim, and we had dinner on the beach… until a rainstorm forced us to take shelter. When Sailing Barking Cat left Australia aboard their cruising catamaran La Vita, the plan was simple: sail offshore toward Fiji, cross the Pacific with their crew and dogs, and begin the next chapter of the cruising dream. But a dream passage can turn into a Mayday shockingly fast. After delaying for weather, sea-trialing the boat, preparing grab bags, checking systems, provisioning carefully, and doing so much right, Dusty and Helena still found themselves hundreds of miles offshore with both engines down, water coming aboard, rough weather building, and their catamaran eventually dismasted in the Pacific. We are very impressed by this diverse and interesting island. The Piton de la Fournaise volcano is active, and we're looking at the solidified lava on the blocked road. We're visiting the three cirques of Salazie, Mafate, and Cilaos, driving along the Road of 500 Curves, and stopping in Saint-Gilles, Saint-Pierre, and Hell-Bourg. We took the Smart Cat S280 out on the water with the owner for a full performance test, putting both the engines and the sails through their paces. Under power, the S280 ran beautifully with twin Yamaha 50HP High Thrust outboards, smooth, responsive, and plenty of confidence-inspiring thrust for maneuvering and cruising. Under sail, the performance was equally impressive. This boat is rigged with a Genoa that's 50% larger than the standard jib, and the difference shows noticeably better drive and speed, especially in lighter air.
