Welcome to Bermuda, the land of historic turquoise waters, white sand beaches, cathedrals, caves, underwater caverns, and the Bermuda Triangle platter at “Wahoos” restaurant. We rented a car (if you can call it that), and went to explore Spanish Point, Admiralty House Park and Tunnels And Crystal Caves The grand finale? A boat dragging anchor. Spanish Point was evidently named after the Spanish ship that first explored the reefs. Admiralty House Tunnels were dug by a captain that reach from the cove to the house. The large circular room was just for fun at parties. Crystal Caves were discovered In 1907 by Carl Gibbon and Edgar Hollis while playing cricket.  When the ball disappeared into a hole the boys went to retrieve it. But the hole kept getting deeper and deeper. They had discovered was the entrance to the natural wonder of these underground caverns. Owned by Wilkonson family since 1884, they set up a research trip to find out how deep it went. A 14 year old was lowered into the hole by his father using a strong rope tied to a tree 140 feet down. With just a bicycle lamp, he witnessed the magnificent splendor of the crystal formations around a lake 55 ft deep. Even Mark Twain visited - twice - and described the shining stalactites, thousands and thousands of them as white as sugar, and thousands and thousands brown and pink and other tints. The caves were also used in the film Neptune’s Daughter. Meanwhile in St. George's Harbor, we got to wait out a 24-hour 45-knot wind storm in the anchorage that had everyone on alert, while we watched a boat drag anchor and hit another boat. Evidently the captain had gone ashore to check in. We have a rule - we don’t leave the boat in bad weather. No exceptions. We’re officially halfway across the ocean, with about ten days behind us and ten still to go. Today brought large seas, repeated squalls, and our first time heaving-to in these conditions. We slowed the boat down, gave everyone (and the dogs) a moment to reset, dealt with gear issues, fixed a water pressure problem, cooked, baked, and rode out multiple squalls—some intentionally dodged, one unavoidable. ► This 40th edition of the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers brought the 32 multihulls we saw in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, safely to port after a beautiful 2,700-mile transatlantic crossing. We rejoin our fleet in Saint Lucia. ► To begin with, a presentation of the setting is in order! We are here in Saint Lucia, a small island in the Lesser Antilles, located between Martinique to the north and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to the south. Saint Lucia, in addition to having been a former French colony, then British, and finally an independent country since 1979, is the only state in the world to bear a woman’s name. This island, with its rugged terrain, covers an area of 620 km² and has a population of nearly 200,000 inhabitants. ► Exposed to the easterly trade winds, it is on the west coast that the best sheltered anchorages are found. Among them, one of the finest is undoubtedly Rodney Bay, at the very north of the island. This vast anchorage is further complemented by a lagoon, a true hurricane hole. It is here that a lively 253-berth marina and very comprehensive technical facilities have been established. We’re finally sailing together again - this time from Puerto Real, Puerto Rico to Samaná, Dominican Republic. But the Caribbean had other plans for us… With only two weeks for this trip and a small craft advisory in effect, we had no choice but to sail through less-than-ideal conditions. What followed was a fast, intense 140 nm downwind passage with 4-meter waves and 25–35 knots of wind nearly the entire way. The day started beautifully - sunshine, calm seas, and Ella relaxing under the sun. But once we left the wind shadow of Puerto Rico, the waves built quickly… and so did the seasickness. Before long, it was just me at the helm, steering Mirage all the way to Samaná through squalls, spray, and the raw power of the Atlantic. This video is all about rough-weather sailing, staying calm when nature tests you, and the reality behind the romantic idea of life at sea. Will Ella sail with me again after this adventure? I enjoy the solitude of sailing solo, but as they say, "No man is an island." That's why I always enjoy when a friend drops by. This is my mate, John in his OzGoose, 'Tadpole'—a very capable boat that I always enjoy sailing alongside. On a recent trip camping on the shore of the stunning Lake Glenbawn in the Hunter Valley, I took my little fibreglass clinker, 'Sparkle'—a 10 foot lug rigged dinghy I can pretty much drag anywhere—when who should slip into my quiet harbour! So here's to sailing with mates, and quiet cups of tea on solitary shores!
