The 2025 Giltinan Trophy world champion Yandoo 18ft skiff team of Tom Needham, Fang Warren and Lewis Brake are set to add another trophy to their names when they line up next Sunday on Sydney Harbour for the final two races of the NSW Championship. With four consecutive wins for Yandoo going into next Sunday’s racing, the task looks particularly difficult for the major challengers as the early weather predictions indicate bread-and-butter wind strength and direction for the champion Yandoo crew and boat. The only challenger with a slim opportunity of becoming the 2025 NSW 18ft skiff champion is the Balmain team (Henry Larkings, Tom Grimes and Lachlan Prior), which will need close to a miracle. Looking mathematically at the current total point scores, and making allowance for each team discarding its worst race result to achieve its best seven-race score for a final points score, Yandoo will only need to record a 3rd or 4th place in one of the two races on Sunday to become champion. Yandoo’s present score, including ALL SIX RACES sailed so far, is 11 points and so with even a 4th place finish in one race would finish with a total of 14 points. Balmain’s present BEST FIVE RACES sailed so far is 12 (and includes a throwaway 13th as its other result). Balmain needs two more winning results on Sunday to give it a best possible seven-race score of 14 points. Finishing level with Yandoo on points is no better for Balmain as Yandoo would take the title on count-back with four race wins against what would be AT BEST three wins for Balmain. Regardless of what seems to be an easy overall victory for Yandoo, if the expected conditions do arrive at race time, they will provide on-water spectators and SailMedia livestream video watchers with plenty of action and good fleet racing for the podium placings. Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles Andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. 2021 war es dann endlich soweit, mit zwei komplett überholten Motoren und einem neuen Geräteträger starteten wir Anfang Juli Richtung Südfrankreich.Leider hatten wir für die gesamte Reise nur zwei Monate Zeit, deswegen hieß es die meiste Zeit Strecke machen. Doch manchmal nahmen wir uns die Zeit zu verweilen, uns Orte näher anzuschauen. Seitdem lag Squib in der Wiener Kuchelau, und der Refit hatte begonnen. Am 17 August 2025 ist es wieder so weit. Obwohl Squib noch nicht ganz fertig ist, werfen wir die Leinen los und starten unsere erste Etappe donauabwärts. Dreieinhalb Wochen später erreichen wir das Donaudelta, der Mast wird gestellt, ein passendes Wetterfenster abgewartet, in zwei Sclägen überqueren wir das Schwarze Meer bis zum Bosporus. Ohne Einzuklarieren mit gehisster Q Flagge durchqueren wir die Türkei und erreichen 5 Tage später die Ägäis. Über Limnos und die nördlichen Sporaden segeln wir bis in den Großraum Athen, von wo aus Sabina nach Hause fliegt, weil ihr Urlaub zu Ende ist. Une pratique magnifique, mais qui comporte des risques — et qui nous rappelle à quel point la faire à plusieurs est plus sécuritaire… et surtout plus agréable. Puis, la météo nous offre un spectacle aussi fascinant qu’impressionnant : quatre trombes marines passent tout près de notre ancrage. Un phénomène rare, puissant, qui te remet vite à ta place. Entre ces moments intenses, il y a aussi la vie de famille à bord, les petits instants simples qui font tout le sel de cette aventure. Le lendemain matin, une annexe vient nous chercher en urgence : 👉 un voilier voisin a touché un récif et est littéralement en train de couler. On se mobilise pour aider, et cet événement nous pousse à réfléchir sérieusement à nos propres moyens d’urgence pour évacuer l’eau de mer si un jour, ça nous arrivait. Et puis… la mer sait aussi offrir des cadeaux. La rencontre avec Anabelle et Anibal. Des gens avec qui tout est devenu naturel, simple, honnête. Une soirée pizza chez Ibin, puis quelques jours plus tard un feu sur Morrodub — BBQ Island, des guimauves, des rires, de la joie pure. Il y a de rares fois où, sans trop savoir pourquoi, tu rencontres des gens et tout est fluide. Le plus difficile, c’est de savoir que le sablier coule, que ces rencontres sont éphémères, et que tôt ou tard viendra le moment de dire un vrai adieu — celui qu’on ne prononce qu’une seule fois. C’est comme ça sur l’eau. En attendant, on profite. On vit ces moments à fond. Et ils nous sortent, un peu, de la solitude que la mer impose parfois.

The Chilean fjords is a region about 2000 NM that extends from Puerto Montt to Cape Horn. A region similar to Alaska in the Southern Hemisphere it is equally beautiful but much more desolate. As you sail South you hardly see boats nor human settlements while enjoying a uniquely beautiful environment with challenging hikes and mountaineering opportunities. If you have sailed Alaska be ready for stronger winds and a lower temperatures for a given season.

My resilience was being severely tested here in Tarrafal do Santiago. It was Mother Nature's turn to come down hard on the town and me. Intense rain fell non-stop for hours. I took it as a good sign. This week in Linton Bay Panama we explored the mangroves in search of wildlife, hiked to a lighthouse with boat friends and visited a sweet lone monkey. But, during a storm one night, tradegy struck. Someone cut through our dinghy and stole it while we slept. We are so fortunate to have great friends on SV Wilma that lent us their dinghy for a few days and oldest daughter as a translator. Just when we thought things were going to quiet down a barge let loose in the anchorage and began drifting towards nearby anchored boats. The sailing community really came together to save the day!
