Heureusement, jamais à court de ressources, notre crazy Kiwi n’avait pas baissé les bras et s’était construit un gréement de fortune qui lui avait permis de terminer, 10 jours plus tard, son premier tour du monde. Il devenait ainsi le premier marin à franchir la ligne d’arrivée du Vendée Globe… sans mât ! 🇳🇿🇺🇸 // Halfway between the Azores and Portugal, it was with great emotion that Conrad returned to the place where he dismasted in 2016, with just 3% of the way to the finish line: ‘I was devastated…’ Fortunately, never short of resources, our crazy Kiwi didn't give up and built himself a makeshift rig that enabled him to complete his first circumnavigation 10 days later. He thus became the first sailor to cross the finish line of the Vendée Globe... without a mast! On y va de bon coeur, en plaçant les deux ou trois termes techniques que nous connaissons tels que : le fait d’empanner, abattre sa voile, appréhender la dépression à venir, passer le front, naviguer à bâbord amure, puis à tribord, une bastaque, un safran, … Oui, vous l’aurez compris, le vocabulaire du nautisme est riche et parfois, une démonstration est (plus que) bienvenue pour devenir un véritable expert ! 🤓 Heureusement pour nous, nous avons Conrad, qui se fait un plaisir de nous expliquer étape par étape ce que signifie « prendre un ris » 🙏🏼 🇳🇿🇺🇸 // Over the past 80 days, in the course of many conversations, our ears have become familiar with the jargon of the sailor. Avec un vent plus qu’instable et une mer toujours aussi formée et courte, Conrad jongle entre son ballast situé sous le vent à vider (près d’une tonne et demie d’eau) et le réglage permanent de ses voiles en fonction de l’intensité du vent 🤯 Vous l’aurez compris, la vie à bord n’est pas une partie de plaisir en cette 77e journée de course. Si seulement le Néo-Zélandais pouvait se reposer, mais il faudra attendre des conditions plus clémentes pour réparer la fixation de son siège (qui s’est cassée dans le choc des vagues) avant de s’octroyer une bonne sieste (bien) méritée. L’anticyclone vers lequel se dirige notre crazy Kiwi pourrait bien être salutaire. Affaire à suivre donc dès demain. D’ici là, on ne lâche rien Coco 💪🏼 🇳🇿🇺🇸 // In far from idyllic conditions, the watchword aboard MS Amlin is compromise. With the wind more than unstable and the seas as rough and short as ever, Conrad is juggling between emptying his leeward ballast tank (nearly a tonne and a half of water) and constantly adjusting his sails according to the strength of the wind. As you can see, life aboard is no picnic on this 77th day of racing. If only the New Zealander could get some rest, but he'll have to wait for milder conditions to repair his seat attachment (which broke in the waves) before taking a well-deserved nap. The high-pressure system towards which our crazy Kiwi is heading could well prove beneficial. We'll be keeping an eye on that tomorrow. 🇫🇷 // Après 74 jours de course, Conrad est de retour dans l’hémisphère nord 🥳 « Jusqu'à présent, tout se passe bien pour le passage du Pot-au-Noir ! J’attends que le vent tourne du sud-est vers l’est et je saurai ainsi que je suis entré dans la zone de convergence intertropicale. » Un passage clé, que le marin espère « sans trop de perturbations ». Et quelle meilleure manière de fêter l’équateur qu’en se préparant un bon café ? Attention, il ne s’agit pas de n’importe quel café ! Celui de Café d'Oriant élu par notre crazy Kiwi comme le « meilleur café torréfié de Lorient, de Bretagne, et probablement même de France ! » ☕️😋 🇳🇿🇺🇸 // After 74 days of racing, Conrad is back in the northern hemisphere 😀 ‘So far, so good for the passage through the Doldrums!
