An August Bank Holiday is more than just a trip to the seaside; it’s a snapshot of Britishness: ice cream and chips, wind and rain, chaos and myths, and above all, a shared sense of tradition. Bank holidays are now such a familiar part of British life that we’ve forgotten where they came from, or why they are called “Bank” holidays at all. Here we share some black and white photographs from a classic British seaside resort. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkl0_R0LT6deoJjS4bNanmw?sub_confirmation=1 Ever looked at the canal and wondered if you could actually drink it? In this video, we're tackling that exact question by planning and designing the ultimate water purification system to turn murky canal water into safe, crystal-clear drinking water right on my narrowboat. We break down the science behind a complete filtration and sterilisation process. We're going way beyond a simple camping filter to design a robust system that can handle everything from silt and algae to invisible chemical contaminants, bacteria, and viruses. This is the complete blueprint for true water independence on the cut. Whether you're a fellow boater, living the van life, or just curious about off-grid living, this is the deep dive you've been looking for. Ever sped past a quiet town like Thorne on the motorway, oblivious to the incredible secrets it holds? We uncover layers of forgotten history, from a crucial boat-building legacy just yards from our Staniland Marina mooring, to the remains of a medieval motte and bailey castle and a 900-year-old church. This isn't just canal history; it's a hidden slice of England's past. Thorne's allure continues with a venture into the stunning Thorne Community Woods, a sprawling 79-acre haven of trees and meadows beside the canal. It's perfect for a dog walk, but we're taking it a step further with our first foraging adventure. What did we find, and more importantly, what did it taste like? One of the last places you'll find genuine freedom in the UK is off-grid mooring on the canals and rivers. And if you choose a secluded spot like the winding hole on the Keadby and Stainforth canal, you can escape the rat-race and slow down to immerse yourself in nature. With huge thanks to Vanessa of the @themindfulnarrowboat who we met the other day and who encouraged us to enjoy the waterways here and to keep learning about nature. We lost control of our widebeam canal boat in a gale in England. Who said strong winds were the preserve of sailors? It turns out that the "wrong" wind can affect canal boats as much as sailing boats. It was Marley-the-dog's first trip, so how did he do? Fortunately, we were joined by Jamie's brother Tim and his daughter Annie, who have much experience with dogs. Tim was the perfect crew. Our passage took us along the New Junction Canal and onto the Aire and Calder Navigation, a first for us. The two canals are distinctly different, with one tree-lined and the other completely exposed; the latter had us stuck at Pollington Lock for the night. This week's episode features some precious boat-life days spent with our family along England's beautiful canals. But while we enjoy England's beautiful waterways, we discover our widebeam boat life is at risk... And we've included some great photography of the atmospheric sunrises. The Fund Britain's Waterways campaign, which highlights the potential demise of the great British canal system, stayed opposite us which gave as an opportunity to find out more. If you want to help please sign the petition that ask "... that the Prime Minister acknowledges the many social, economic and environmental benefits that Britain’s inland waterways provide and gives assurance that the government will intervene, where necessary, to ensure our rivers and canals remain fully open, navigable, safe and accessible for all". Our first solo trip, and if you want a taste of canal life on a perfect spring weekend in England, look no further! If you like this video please do give it a like and share, it really helps us. We take a few days to head towards the village of Barnby Dun, one day walking and the next day by boat. The weather is just perfect. Liz talks us through the little engineering marvel of the Don Aqueduct, which spans the river Don.
