We stopped at the Queen’s Bath and Glass Window Bridge in Eleuthera during high tide with 15–25 knots of northeast wind, and the Atlantic side was absolutely exploding over the rocks while the Caribbean side was calm — an incredible place to see the power of the ocean. The wind was forecast to build throughout the day and the Glass Window Bridge was eventually closed, but for us the bigger concern was timing our departure to make it through Current Cut at the right time with wind and current lining up. In October 2020, I bought my Grinde — but the story began when I was eighteen, sailing this Danish 27-footer across the IJsselmeer. Designed in 1976 by Peter Bruun, the Grinde is wide for her length, solidly built, and carries deep ballast. She isn’t sleek or fashionable. She’s built like a whale — full, steady, powerful. When the dream of sailing around the world began to take shape, one question kept returning: Can I really do this in a 27-foot boat? Instead of figuring it out alone, I organized a Grinde weekend in Enkhuizen. Owners sailed in from across the Netherlands. We compared boats, shared modifications, talked about heavy weather, ballast, rigging, and offshore experience. What started as a small gathering is now a growing annual meetup — a place where knowledge and stories are exchanged openly. Standing there, surrounded by these boats, I realized something important: The real limit is rarely the boat. It’s what we believe about the boat. Here in Solo Sailor Atlantic Circuit Part 4, Mark and his modified Cape Dory 36 Swan continue their circle cruise of the Atlantic, sailing in November 2025 from Agadir, Morocco to Mindelo, Cape Verde. The next leg will be his return trans-Atlantic passage to the West Indies. A unique aspect of his voyage is that for auxiliary propulsion he is using a tilt-up 6kw electric outboard in a custom built well in the lazarette locker. Since it has very limited range he mainly uses it only to depart and enter harbor. On this passage he had persistent trade winds behind him and only a few hours of light winds so he did not need to motor at all once he cleared the harbor.
