On December 7th, 1909, the train ferry SS Marquette and Bessemer No. 2 left Conneaut, Ohio for her daily 5-hour voyage to Port Stanley, Ontario. She departed as a storm descended over Lake Erie. Despite numerous contradictory sightings throughout the night, come morning the ship and her crew were never seen again. To this day, her wreck remains undiscovered, making her one of the greatest mysteries of the Great Lakes. The SS Nieuw Amsterdam, launched in 1937 by the Holland America Line, quickly became one of the most beloved ocean liners to ever sail the Atlantic. She was beautifully designed, often called the Darling of the Dutch, and designated a ship of peace. But when the Netherlands fell to German occupation in World War 2, she was converted into a troopship for the allied war effort. After the war, she returned to regular passenger service. On September 14th, 1914, RMS Carmania, recently converted into an armed merchant cruiser made a strange discovery in the South Atlantic-- another armed merchant cruiser disguised to look exactly like her. The daring raid was one of the most dramatic U-Boat victories of World War II. U-47 and commander Günther Prien were catapulted to fame but their success wouldn't last long. Just over a year later, U-47 and her screw would vanish without a trace. The Queen Elizabeth 2 (fondly known as the QE2) was launched in 1967 was the last Cunard Queen built in the United Kingdom. Despite coming into service at the worst possible time for an ocean liner, The QE2 was a crowd favorite, earning an adoring fanbase that loves her to this day.
