The massive, fire-masted barque was a marvel of engineering and shipbuilding, one of the finest ships afloat at the time. After a final, routine message, she vanished without a trace. First lit on January 21, 1881, the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse is one of the most isolated lighthouses in the United States. Built on a desolate rock a mile off the Northern Oregon coast, Terrible Tilly endured the worst that the rugged Pacific could throw at it. Through it all, the light remained for 77 years. On the night of November 4th, 1875 the paddle steamer SS Pacific, launched September 24, 1850, collided with the schooner Orpheus southwest of Cape Flattery, Washington. The RMS Empress of Britain, launched June 11, 1930, was the largest, fastest, and most luxurious ocean liner to service the Europe to Canada route. She was also one of the first liners designed to serve as a cruise ship in the winter. While she wasn't a major commercial success during her short career, she earned a small but loyal following who loved her spaciousness and beauty. But World War 2 brought the great liner a premature end, making her the largest ship ever sunk by a German u-boat.
