Checkers is our beautiful boat and the heart of our channel. When we bought her in Tahiti, we believed her sails were in decent condition. But once we got underway, it became painfully clear: they’re not just tired—they’re rotten. Torn, soft, and barely holding shape. We’ve done everything we can to nurse them along, but they’re beyond saving. This fundraiser is about giving Checkers the sails she deserves. We’ve already poured a huge amount into getting her seaworthy—gear, repairs, and the kind of hands-on fixes that only happen when you live aboard full-time. But this next step is bigger than us. We’ve shared the full story in our GoFundMe video on our channel, The Sailing Brothers. And to make this sail a true community effort, we’ll be writing the names of every donor who gives £10 or more directly onto the new sail. Your name will fly with us—visible, permanent, and part of the journey. If our videos have ever made you laugh, taught you something, or helped you feel part of the adventure—this is your chance to help keep it going. Thank you for being part of the crew. — Luke & Adam, The Sailing Brothers Go fund me link below https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-us-raise-a-new-suit-of-sails-for-checkers/cl/o?utm_campaign=fp_sharesheet&utm_medium=customer&utm_source=copy_link&lang=en_US

Weather Update: Wednesday 15th October, Vela Garška, Hvar
► Nova was ready to set sail on a beautiful summer's day. Early in the morning, Valérie and Jean-Noël headed out from the harbor at Golfe-Juan, hoping to encounter some of the Mediterranean's most majestic inhabitants: dolphins, sperm whales, loggerhead turtles, and other marine mammals. The couple had no idea what was in store for them that day! ► “After sailing several miles and enjoying our first encounter with dolphins playing in front of the bows of the boat, my husband noticed an unusual gathering off in the distance. We immediately slowed the engines, without approaching, scrupulously following the recommendations of the “Conservatoire Maritime”: Do not disturb these animals, observe them from a distance. In the middle of the group, one of them began to slap the surface with its powerful tail. Was it a signal to its fellow creatures? A call? We will never know. And suddenly, to our great surprise, the mammals changed direction and began heading straight towards us. We cut the engines, turned off the sounder, and waited. What followed was a moment of pure magic. A group of pilot whales slowly approached until they were surrounding the boat, just feet away from the hull. They watched us, curious, peaceful, almost playful - as if inviting us to dive in and share their world. With our phones in hand, we tried our best to capture the scene: we had to bring back proof, because no one would have believed us otherwise! For nearly an hour, the pilot whales remained, barely inches away from us, gently circling the boat. There was no sign of aggression – simply curiosity and surprising kindness. Mother nature in all her splendor. Our attention was drawn to one individual that was hanging back a little. Larger, more massive - doubtless the dominant male. Suddenly, he lunged toward us at full speed. But the pilot whale simply positioned himself between his group and the boat, as if to signal that that was enough and it was time to leave. Then, in a perfectly synchronized ballet, the pilot whales gathered together and swam away, gradually disappearing into the big blue. We remained there, silent, overwhelmed, aware that we had experienced something unique. Fortunately, our photos and videos bear witness to this moment suspended in time, which we relive with emotion every time we share them with our friends. A moment of grace, a gift from the sea.” ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests!

Sooo yeah… things got sketchy sailing Brazil’s north coast. After thirteen days at sea crossing the Atlantic, we were all just stoked to be back near land — ready for beaches, calm seas, and a little bit of paradise. But, of course, that would just be flat out boring..right? What was supposed to be an easy cruise quickly turned into a battle against nonstop storms, a busted anchor, and a few surprises we definitely didn’t sign up for. Welcome to Brazil’s wild north coast. ------------------------------------------ EXCLUSIVE CONTENT!!: https://www.patreon.com/sailingrippleeffect ------------------------------------------ Watch Season 10: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1CA-bu-rW0&list=PLEz8PmTM4lWBzU9d-_qLVRnQsaDb5D-ft Watch Season 9: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReB90uELXV8&list=PLEz8PmTM4lWA-ObNyQan-3_XqLKsgJFmW Watch Season 8: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIVCzMdoWBA&list=PLEz8PmTM4lWDtf6jfHdIgHPL7oGtAWMt3 Watch Season 7: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afaTfAmnuMs&list=PLEz8PmTM4lWDK2c2YW8rr55wjvf74934g Watch Season 6: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-1Jkl4rCMY&list=PLEz8PmTM4lWDu_xLN0JFnx-YX5lSgzXq3&index=1&t=57s Watch Season 4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7IrEwJVnHI&list=PLEz8PmTM4lWDG7tstlqR3O1M2fkQQT8-A Watch Season 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nsvIT8jNl8&t=131s Watch Season 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yt7prknxHOA Watch Season 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Z1OuEPXG-w ------------------------------------------ Follow Mara: https://www.instagram.com/mararipple/ Follow Doc: https://www.instagram.com/docgastone/ Follow Jorge: https://www.instagram.com/jorge_andres_valdivieso/ Follow Nicole: https://www.instagram.com/nicolexgoetz/ Follow Xenia: https://www.instagram.com/xenia_lieb/ #brazil #sailing #sailingadventure

We’re back in the boatyard and it’s full steam ahead (well… almost). This week we’re prepping the engine bay, cleaning, sanding, and getting it ready for paint. But not everything’s gone to plan — an unexpected injury has thrown a spanner in the works and slowed progress way down. Boat projects have a way of testing your patience, and this one’s no different. We’re learning to roll with the setbacks, take things one job at a time, and keep the dream moving forward — even when it feels like everything’s come to a halt. If you’ve ever spent time in a boatyard, you’ll know how it goes… there’s always another layer of work waiting underneath the first one! ⛵ Subscribe to follow along as we tackle the final stages of our refit and get one step closer to launch day.

A rainy day in the Wrangell, Alaska shipyard with our 80-foot steel schooner Alaskan Gypsy. With welding repairs underway on the hull, it’s time to tear out the old bathroom (head) to reach badly rusted steel and thin plating beneath. In this 22-minute slow-TV edit, you’ll see real-time refit work and hear the thinking behind it - deciding how much to remove, uncovering years of damage from leaks and corrosion, and re-imagining how the space could someday be rebuilt. What’s inside: • first rainy-day welding under the new shelter • demoing the vanity, cupboards, and tile • discovering corrosion and thin hull plate • talk about head redesign ideas and liveaboard practicality • reflections on slow progress, storage, and future rebuild plans This is pure shipyard reality - no hype, just the rhythm of the work. Day one in Maui, and of course, I was drawn straight to the harbor. After nearly 24 hours of travel (including a mid-flight emergency where my old nursing skills kicked back in!), I landed at Maʻalaea Harbor — the second windiest harbor in the world. For me, this walk is more than just a look at boats. It's a connection to my roots. It's a grounding feeling of home, thousands of miles away from gypsy and my soul mate. It’s a reflection on why the ocean keeps calling me back — from growing up in Valdez, Alaska and Prince William Sound, to now living and creating aboard with Scott as we take on the unfolding journey of refitting our 80’ triple-masted Thomas Colvin schooner, The Alaskan Gypsy. It's about gratitude for the entire experience! Whether in the raw stillness of Alaska or the trade winds of Hawaii, the sea has always been my grounding place. Thanks for joining me in keeping Gypsy Life connected across oceans. Life in a small Alaskan shipyard is full of surprises - but today we got one we never expected. The harbormaster called to say someone left us an anonymous gift at the IGA grocery store in Wrangell. In this episode of The Alaskan Gypsy Life, join us as we: • Wonder what the mysterious call means (complaint or kindness?) • Share the ups and downs of working on our steel motorsailer in the shipyard • Talk about community connections, Reiki sessions, and settling into Wrangell • Walk into the IGA to discover an incredible anonymous act of generosity — a $100 gift card • Reflect on gratitude, sensitivity, and the beauty of connection on this Alaskan journey Whether it’s welding on the boat, grounding with Reiki, or receiving kindness from strangers, this moment reminded us why we’re documenting our gypsy life: to share the raw, real, and heart-opening experiences of life in coastal Alaska. If you’ve ever had a stranger’s kindness touch your life, drop a comment below - we’d love to hear your story. 🌊 Subscribe to follow our Alaskan Gypsy journey: repairs, wilderness sailing, and the wild ride of living aboard.
Created a hole under the shower, buried under a tank, backed with foam, and nearly impossible to reach. Careful welding, tiny rods, and a lot of patience to patch it without fire or fumes. Life in the shipyard isn’t boring!

Back in the Wrangell shipyard with our 80’ steel schooner S/V Alaskan Gypsy. This time, we’re tackling electrolysis damage caused by years in a marina with stray current and neglected zincs. In this 16-minute update, you’ll see: • welding into pits and divots left by electrolysis in the hull plating below the waterline • how galvanic corrosion differs from electrolysis (with a reading from Scott Fratcher’s excellent resource here: http://yachtwork.com/report-corrosion.htm ) • how some weld seams had literally dissolved away • practical repair strategies discussed before sandblasting and epoxy primer • thoughts on long-term steel boat restoration This is part shipyard log, part technical dive into marine corrosion. If you’re into steel boat refits, welding, and real-world lessons about electrolysis, you’ll find plenty here. In this episode, we tackle boat osmosis head-on as we uncover hidden water damage throughout our fiberglass hull. After weeks of sanding and grinding, we start the process of repairing the osmosis blisters, applying primer, and prepping the hull for the next stage of the bottom job. If you see a solution to this problem, please tell us about it in the comments.
