⛵ Welcome aboard Sailing with Scott, where the thrill of racing meets the joy of simply being on the water. Based in beautiful Dana Point, California, my channel dives into the heart of local sailing culture, from the adrenaline of regattas to the casual camaraderie of the DPYC Beer Can Races. ⛵This segment of the race video zeroes in on the Dana Point Harbor Channel, where every sailor faces a dramatic final challenge—the notorious zigzagging finish. By late afternoon, the winds are often at their strongest, funneled straight down the channel by the towering Dana Point Headlands. Boats are forced into a relentless rhythm of tacking every 15 to 30 seconds, with no room for error. One miscalculation, and it’s either into the jetty or hard up against the rocky channel edge. It’s a test of precision, nerves, and seamanship—exactly the kind of finish that makes the DPYC Beer Can Race so thrilling to watch and unforgettable to sail. ⛵ For those new to the term, “Beer Can Race” is a sailing tradition celebrated by yacht clubs around the world. At the Dana Point Yacht Club (DPYC), these fun, informal, weekly races bring sailors together on weeknights for short, spirited competitions. Unlike the high-pressure weekend regattas, Beer Can Races are all about enjoying the breeze, sharpening sailing skills, and sharing good times on the water with fellow sailors. ⛵On this channel, you’ll find race-day highlights, behind-the-scenes looks at boat crews and yacht club life, and stories of seamanship that blend competition with community. Whether you’re a seasoned racer, a cruising sailor, or simply love the beauty and challenge of life under sail, Sailing with Scott gives you a front-row seat to the action, adventure, and friendships that make sailing unforgettable. ⚓ Subscribe to Sailing with Scott and join me for every tack, gybe, and finish line—because any day on the water is always a better day! ⛵Watch my entire YouTube RACING PLAYLIST here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9f9m0yiL-8&list=PLYIomD48x-gcA8tJTc111e1wN3ZztVdH5 ❤️ FOLLOW US ON SOCIALS ✅ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/sailingwithscott/ ✅ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/bloomvideo/ ✅ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/sailingwithscott/ ✅ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/bvpaz/ ✅ TicTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@sailingwithscott #sail #sailing #sailboatracing #yachting #sailinglife

Welcome aboard Raptor II, a J/112E built for performance and grace on the water. Today, we’re taking part in the Long Beach Senior Salty Sailors Pursuit Race — a local tradition held every Tuesday throughout the year. With its long waterline and low vertical center of gravity, Raptor II delivers a smooth ride that rivals much larger 40-footers. It’s a prime example of what makes a racing sailboat both fast and fun. Skippered by Heinz Butner and crewed by a talented team of seven, we’re racing inside the Port of Long Beach, California — one of the busiest and most iconic container ports in the world. Spanning 3,200 acres with 10 piers and 80 berths, it serves as a major gateway for U.S.–Asia trade. In today’s race, Raptor II holds the lowest PHRF rating among a fleet of 10 boats — and all the action takes place right inside the harbor. 👉 Subscribe for more sailing races, cruising adventures, and boat life stories. 📍 Location: Port of Long Beach, CA ⛵ Boat: J/112E “Raptor II” ⚓ Race: Senior Salty Sailors Pursuit Race 🎬 New sailing videos often on Sailing with Scott Check out Raptor II in a sailboat race during the Los Angeles Firestorm of 2025: https://youtu.be/Ak6sbiYjzxI?si=HSHEHpFO6c0vQzH1 ❤️ FOLLOW US ON SOCIALS ✅ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/sailingwithscott/ ✅ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/bloomvideo/ ✅ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/sailingwithscott/ ✅ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/bvpaz/ ✅ TicTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@sailingwithscott #sail #sailing #sailboatracing #yachting #sailinglife #jboats
The Volvo Ocean 60 (VO60) is a legendary class of offshore racing sailboat that played a crucial role in the evolution of the world’s most prestigious around-the-world yacht race - originally known as the Whitbread Round the World Race, later rebranded as the Volvo Ocean Race, and now known as The Ocean Race. In this episode, we sail aboard Wolfhound, a 1997 Volvo Ocean 60 based in The Port of Long Beach, Wilmington, California. Designed by Bruce Farr, Wolfhound was originally "Merit Cup", built by Martin Marine. She finished in 2nd place competing in the Whitbread 1997/1998 and skippered by Grant Dalton. In 19 knots of wind the vessel easily cruises at 14.3 knots and everyone aboard this social sail is having an extraordinary day. The Volvo Ocean 60 bridged the gap between the traditional heavy maxis and the more modern, faster VO70s. Many VO60s were sold post-race into private hands and are still racing or cruising. Capable of sustained speeds over 25 knots in the right conditions, the Volvo Ocean 60 was designed for extreme conditions in the Southern Ocean. All winches and sail controls are powered entirely by human effort and can withstand some of the most punishing legs in offshore racing. The Volvo Ocean 60 hull material is composite, made of carbon fiber and kevlar. The LOA is 64 feet and has a beam of 17' 2". The draft is 12'3" and has a carbon fiber mast that is 90 feet tall with 4 spreaders and a sail area of 1,937 sq ft upwind and 3,550 sq ft downwind. Let's go FAST!
