In this episode we actually sail right into the storm and the auto helm can't cope, we hand steering all night, we have 40-45 knots and 4 metre confused, peaking seas that pound the boat and the people in every direction, and in the middle of it, the boat starts leaking - TRULY AWFUL!!! As we step in urgently to skipper a friend's Leopard 45 from Tahiti to Fiji, we experience many barriers, Customs problems, narrow cuts through the fringing reef with breaking waves and strong currents, and undulating waves putting our crew down with sea sickness and then the big one - huge lightning storms blocking our passage and we have no alternative but to grit our teeth and go through... This was probably the worst lightning storm we have been in with at least 3 vertical strikes hitting the water close to the boat and continuous lightning all around. Watch to see how we cope and what we do to minimise the risk.... Also watch past the end for some nice coral an swimming shots where we do the the talk to camera - it is beautiful!!! We take you through that experience, how we came through it and the lessons we learnt so we hoepfully never have to do that again.... The good news coming out it though is that the systems that Portofino helped to create with Italian steering specialists are available for everyone to use and mean that Manual Emergency Tillers can be a thing of the past and never be needed again....
