With strong winds and big seas on the way, we set sail from Porto Pollo bound for Ajaccio — the capital of Corsica and birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte. As we approach, the wind builds to over 30 knots, giving us a wild welcome before we find shelter in the port that will be our home for the week. While waiting out the weather, we explore the city, visit the local chandleries, tackle some much-needed maintenance including restoring our teak decks, and treat ourselves to a brand-new drone to capture future adventures from above.

Sometimes sailing teaches patience — and in this episode, we return to Sardinia to wait out the strong Mistral winds. Italy seems determined to keep us anchored a little longer. When we lift anchor, we discover we’ve snagged a cable on the seabed and are stuck fast. With some careful teamwork and a trusty hook, we free ourselves and return to one of our favourite bays to relax, recharge, and wait for calmer conditions. Sailing isn’t always about moving forward — sometimes it’s about going with the flow, enjoying where you are, and trusting the sea to set the pace. 🌊 ⛵ About Us We’re Richard & Jude, a couple living full-time aboard our yacht Helios and documenting our adventures across the Mediterranean. We set sail from the stunning island of Cavallo bound for the must-see town of Bonifacio, perched dramatically on the cliffs of southern Corsica. Our plan to moor in a quiet cove near the harbour proves more complicated than expected, and with no easy solution, we drop anchor nearby to await a potential marina berth. But Corsica has other plans. As a strong storm builds overnight and the marina stays full, we’re forced to pivot—making a dash ahead of the weather to take shelter in the beautiful Golfe de Sant'Amanza. Join us as we navigate tight anchorages, shifting plans, and Corsica’s wild coastline. We set out to explore two of La Maddalena National Park’s most iconic bays. The first is postcard-perfect but packed—Cala Corsica's crystal-clear turquoise waters are stunning, yet the shallow anchorage is shoulder‑to‑shoulder in high season. After squeezing in and sensing the chaos, we decide to lift anchor and leave. A short hop brings us to a neighbouring bay that’s just as beautiful. Here the sand and granite cliffs frame a “saltwater swimming pool”, and we finally get to paddle ashore, swim, and unwind. As the day winds down, we cross back to Sardinia’s mainland. We tuck into a quieter anchorage near Palau to pick up groceries, tackle some chores, and prepare for the expected Mistral wind. It’s a reminder that even in paradise, finding space to breathe makes all the difference. Join us for a day of contrasts—crowded coves, tranquil swims, and the simple joy of relaxed days back on the Sardinian coast. In this episode, we wrap up a few long-overdue boat projects while waiting to sail into the Maddalena National Park. First up is finally mounting our Gen3 Starlink dish—a job that’s been on hold since we bought it almost a year ago in Greece. After sitting on the coachroof all this time, it’s time to give it a proper home on our solar arch. That means cutting the cable, feeding it through the arch and conduits, and joining it back together—fingers crossed it still works! Meanwhile, Jude brings out her trusty sewing machine to tackle a few smaller jobs, including a Velcro retaining strap for our swim platform ladder. Just another week of life aboard Helios, making sure everything is ready for the adventures ahead. As we make our way up the east coast of Sardinia, strong winds force us to pause for a few days at anchor. But downtime doesn't mean idle time aboard Helios. We dive into our to-do list: Jude completes the cones for our Jordan Series Drogue, Richard finishes the watermaker installation, and tackles a much-needed repair on the anchor windlass motor. We even manage to squeeze in a resupply run to shore. Sometimes the best progress happens when the wind says stop. With a two-week wind forecast pointing east, we take the opportunity to set sail in that direction — a move that not only suits the weather but also brings us closer to the beautiful Maddalena Archipelago. After the long passage from Sicily, it’s time to give Helios a bit of the love and care she deserves. We spend some time cleaning, polishing stainless steel, and taking care of the little things that keep her running smoothly. Not everything goes to plan though — Richard is called into action for some emergency windlass maintenance. Luckily, there are far worse places in the world to turn a wrench. This episode captures the rhythm of sailing life: balancing the magic of the journey with the work it takes to keep it all afloat. In this episode, we visit the beautiful beachside town of San Vito Lo Capo, a favourite stop on Sicily’s western coast, and set out on our overnight passage to Sardinia. After a day and night in a rolling sea, we arrive and drop anchor at Spiaggia del Riso, near Villasimius — a quiet and welcome landfall. The next day brings a lovely sail across the Gulf as we make our way westward to a popular anchorage just east of Cagliari, Sardinia’s vibrant capital. We have never been to Sardinia, so we are looking forward to exploring this sailing paradise together. In this episode, we slow things down and take care of a few essentials before the next big sail. We explore the streets of Termini Imerese, a practical but charming stop for full-time cruisers, then hop on a train to Palermo for a quick visit — and to collect a much-anticipated Amazon parcel (always a bit of a mission while living aboard!). From there, we sail west to San Vito Lo Capo, a stunning coastal town where we top up on diesel and water in preparation for our upcoming crossing to Sardinia. It’s one of those episodes that captures the quieter, behind-the-scenes side of the sailing life — the moments between the adventures that make them possible.
