This is the riskiest thing we’ve ever done. We have a four-day ocean passage ahead of us from Gibraltar to Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. But first we have to take on the Strait of Gibraltar — known for its busy shipping lanes, strong currents, wild seas, and orcas that love to eat rudders for lunch. We’ve prepared and planned for this passage for some time and we’re looking forward to taking on the challenge. It’s going to be good practice for our Atlantic crossing in a few weeks’ time. Winds are expected around 15–20 knots with seas up to 4 metres once we’re clear of the Strait. Gibraltar is our last stop in the Mediterranean and the jump-off point for the passage south to the Canaries. We sail in and anchor in the bay off La Línea, which gives us a great view of the Rock — even when morning fog rolls in and most of it disappears. Then the engine refuses to start. We suspect the starter battery has finally given up, and we’re lucky we can just drop into Gibraltar for a replacement. We take Helios into Queensway Marina to reset the VAT clock and get ready for the passage south, then join a guided tour up the Rock. The tunnels from the Great Siege and WWII are genuinely impressive, and once you’re inside them it’s easy to see why this piece of rock has been such a major military asset for centuries. We take a break from sailing and head inland from our marina in Motril to explore the historic city of Granada. Almost fried the engine minutes out of Cartagena. After finishing the service, we left the seacocks closed — and only caught it once we were already underway. This is the slow leg sailing southwest along the Spanish coast toward Motril Marina. Light air, glassy nights in open bays, and a passage that is more about reading the weather and picking shelter than making miles. After the engine scare, the rest of the trip settles into calm water, barely any wind, and sunsets that made the slow progress feel worth it. We stop overnight at anchor in open bays that go flat, then push on when we can. Motril is the next pause for a few days before we keep working down the coast. We say goodbye to Canet-en-Roussillon and set off on a mission: reach Cartagena in just 6 days. That means a few overnight passages down the coast of Spain, and a forecast that just says "variable." So the plan is to make the best of whatever wind we get, and motor when it gives us nothing. We found an electric sailing catamaran built from volcanic rock and recycled plastic bottles. First, we tour the factory, then the boat, then we take her sailing. This episode starts at the Windelo yard to see how they build a durable, lightweight performance catamaran at a competitive price — with no extra cost for the reduced ecological impact. The hulls use basalt fibre from volcanic rock and PET foam from recycled plastic bottles, a composite sandwich the yard says cuts construction emissions by nearly 50% compared with traditional GRP. From there we come aboard for a full tour of the interior living spaces and the exterior, then we go for a sail to feel what life is like on this vessel under passage and see first-hand how she performs in light airs. Silent electric propulsion, solar, hydrogeneration, and an easily driven hull are the other half of the story. We didn’t plan to come back to Canet-en-Roussillon. A few weeks ago the plan was to return west through the Balearic Islands. Then a chance encounter with some fellow Aussies changed everything — and we found ourselves heading back to Canet, the marina where we first laid eyes on Helios in May 2023. It’s only a day sail from Cap d’Agde, but this stop is different. Canet is where the whole adventure began. Our visitors have gone and it’s time to get going. This is as far east as we sail this season. From here we turn around and start heading west — west all the way to the Caribbean. First, though, we have a date in Canet in mid-August. With a break in the westerlies, we need to make haste and get moving as fast as we can. Ahead of us is about four days of sailing, including a few overnight passages. This is real-life Med sailing and motorsailing: progress that can feel slower than a person on a bike, and a reminder that the Mediterranean isn’t the “big ocean” — until you’re trying to cross it against the clock. After a short hop along the Maddalenas, we tuck into a secluded anchorage and slow right down — a few days away from the hectic world, with nothing but calm water, warm sand, and no schedule. We wake up to a calm, idyllic morning at Isola Piana on the northwest tip of Sardinia. After refuelling and filling up with water in Soller, we discover there’s no space to anchor. Time to keep sailing along Mallorca’s dramatic, rugged coastline in search of the perfect overnight spot.
