It’s time to lift anchor and say goodbye as we leave friends behind and continue sailing south along the coast of Spain. The wind is light, but the sea is kind — making for a relaxed and enjoyable day motor sailing along the shoreline. After spending the night in Blanes, we wake to calm seas and perfect conditions for learning. With very little pressure from wind or waves, Jude takes the opportunity to work on her sailing skills and gain more confidence at the helm. Sometimes it’s not about big winds or dramatic passages — just gentle days, steady progress, and learning as you go. Sailing Spain, anchoring problems and real cruising life aboard our sailboat Helios. In this episode, an anchor buoy mishap turns into a lesson while moving down the Spanish coast to Palamós in changing weather. In this episode, things don’t go quite to plan with our new anchor buoy, Grippy. After spending a peaceful 24 hours at anchor, the weather begins to change and we decide to move further down the coast in search of better shelter at Palamós. While setting the anchor, the buoy line is pulled through the propeller, snapping free from Grippy and causing damage to the buoy itself — but thankfully without immobilising the engine. It’s a good reminder of how quickly simple manoeuvres can turn into lessons when cruising. Once everything is under control, we head ashore to explore the beautiful seaside town of Palamós and catch up with our friends Di and Stu from The Campbell Gamble. By the end of the day, all is well aboard Helios — although Grippy doesn’t come away unscathed. Another day of real-life cruising, problem-solving, and learning as we continue sailing Spain. In this episode of Sailing Helios, we explore the town of Roses, our very first stop after sailing into Spain. Roses has a relaxed holiday feel, but arriving in autumn means the crowds have thinned and the town feels calm and welcoming. After taking care of the essentials — new SIM cards and a supermarket restock — we spend time wandering through town, soaking up the atmosphere, and visiting the local church. Unsettled weather keeps us in Roses longer than planned, and we end up spending six quiet days anchored in the bay waiting for the right conditions to move on. When the forecast finally improves, we set sail again, following the rugged Costa Brava coastline south to a beautiful bay called Sa Riera, where we drop anchor for the night. A gentle episode of autumn sailing, small routines, and enjoying Spain at a slower pace. In this episode, we finally replace our Spade anchor with a brand-new setup, visiting the excellent chandleries in Canet-en-Roussillon to get Helios ready for the next stage of our journey. Being back in Canet is surprisingly emotional. This is where we first laid eyes on Helios and where our sailing adventure began. Three years later, after more than 6,000 nautical miles sailing around the Mediterranean, it’s a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come and the incredible friends we’ve made along the way. Along with the new anchor, we also picked up a Grippy Anchor Buoy to improve visibility when we’re at anchor — something we’ve been meaning to do for a long time. With bad weather forecast, we decided to wait one more day before heading south into Spain. When the window opens, we enjoy a beautiful sail to Roses, where we finally put our new anchor and buoy to the test. A practical upgrade, a bit of nostalgia, and another memorable sail aboard Helios. In this episode, we enjoy some well-earned downtime while staying at Cap d'Agde Marina. It’s a vast marina surrounded by excellent chandleries, shops, cafés, and restaurants — and just a short distance from the famous Cap d’Agde nudist beaches. Unsurprisingly, there are a few interesting and unusual shops around town that make this stop a memorable one. After stocking up and enjoying marina life, it’s time to set sail once more. We depart Cap d’Agde and head west along the French Mediterranean coast to Canet-en-Roussillon, returning to where our sailing journey first began two and a half years ago. As is typical for this coastline, strong offshore winds provide an exciting and fast sail before we dock back in Canet — closing the loop on an incredible chapter of our sailing adventure. With a break in the weather, it’s finally time to cast off from La Ciotat and continue our voyage west along the French coast. It’s a very early start for us—alarms ringing before 4am—before settling in for a 14-hour passage toward a small marina in Carnon. It may not be classic Instagram territory, but Carnon turns out to be a hidden gem: a calm, protected berth, friendly locals, and cafés and ice creams just steps from Helios. Exactly what tired sailors need after a long day at sea. The next morning, we head out for a celebratory breakfast for Richard’s birthday before pointing Helios toward the famous Cap d’Agde—known worldwide for its huge nudist village and sprawling beach. For us, though, it’s another fantastic marina stopover with all the chandleries we’ve been hoping for. And perhaps… a little visit to the village? That’s for next week. Join us for long passages, quiet discoveries, sailor comforts, and another chapter in our journey west aboard Helios. We make an early escape from the Giens Peninsula to stay ahead of strong winds forecast for later in the day. The headland near Toulon is notorious for accelerating the breeze, and once in open water, the waves can quickly build—so timing is everything. With a smooth passage behind us, we drop anchor off Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer and wait for the wind to turn before crossing the bay to La Ciotat. This charming French town welcomes us with a large harbour, winding old streets, and plenty of cafés, restaurants, and small shops to explore. La Ciotat is a stop well worth making as we look for our next weather window to continue west along the Mediterranean coast. In this episode, we sail into the world-famous town of Saint-Tropez to finally see what all the fuss is about. The streets are buzzing with tourists in the late-August heat, the boutiques are filled with iconic designer labels, and the harbour is packed with superyachts. We enjoy wandering the charming lanes and soaking in the atmosphere—though the luxury price tags are definitely out of our league! The next day, we hoist the spinnaker and leave Saint-Tropez behind, bound for the Giens Peninsula. What follows is one of our best sails of the entire season. Helios comes alive in the breeze, powering up to 9.5 knots as we scream past Porquerolles. It’s exhilarating… and when we suddenly hear sirens blaring over the VHF, we can’t help but wonder: are we going too fast? After more than two weeks in beautiful Villefranche-sur-Mer, it’s finally time to lift anchor and continue our journey along the French Riviera. Our first stop: the famous and unbelievably busy anchorage at Îles de Lérins. With nearly 300 boats filling the bay during the day, there’s constant action, people-watching, and everything from superyachts to paddleboarders drifting by. After soaking in the atmosphere for a day, we set off again—this time bound for iconic Saint-Tropez. With perfect conditions, we hoist our spinnaker for the first time this season and enjoy a stunning sail along the coast. We wrap up the day anchored just offshore from Saint-Tropez, ready to take you ashore to explore the town in next week’s episode. Helios is finally back together—new anchor chain, spare anchor, and a brand-new windlass motor—ready to venture once again into the Mediterranean. But the timing couldn’t be worse. With stormy weather forecast, we head back into the bay of Villefranche-sur-Mer… just in time to face not one, but two powerful storms. These systems bring less wind than our last nightmare in Villefranche, but they make up for it with hail, heavy rain, rolling thunder, and wild conditions that challenge every new piece of gear we’ve just installed. Will Helios’ upgraded ground tackle hold? Will the new windlass motor survive its first real test? And will we make it safely through this latest round of Mediterranean chaos? Menton turns out to be the perfect refuge — a warm welcome at the marina, new anchor chain sorted, and a chance to breathe again. Sometimes sailing teaches patience — and in this episode, we return to Sardinia to wait out the strong Mistral winds. Italy seems determined to keep us anchored a little longer. When we lift anchor, we discover we’ve snagged a cable on the seabed and are stuck fast. With some careful teamwork and a trusty hook, we free ourselves and return to one of our favourite bays to relax, recharge, and wait for calmer conditions.
