This week marks a major milestone for our mountain home: we are finally getting the structure dried in. We’re diving deep into two critical systems that transform a construction site into a functional home—high-performance windows and a smart, budget-friendly HVAC solution. The "Ultimate" Window Solution We’re installing European-style tilt-and-turn windows that are a game-changer for the American market. These aren't standard vinyl frames; they feature internal steel reinforcements for incredible dimensional stability. Most importantly for a high-efficiency build, the multi-point locking system squeezes the sash against triple gaskets to create a virtually airtight seal. Smart HVAC: Performance vs. Price For heating and cooling, we opted for a 3-zone mini-split system. While central air is the standard, this installation took only 1.5 hours compared to an estimated 3-day ductwork installation. We’re also sharing how we’re keeping the bathrooms warm without the massive expense of radiant floor heating. Windows Discount!!! Building a house on a mountain comes with a specific set of problems—mostly involving gravity. In this episode, we tackle the most difficult wall of the build so far. With a steep bank and almost zero clearance for scaffolding, getting the LP SmartSide up was a logistical puzzle that really showed me the value of working with a professional crew. While the exterior is finally getting its "skin," we’re also heading inside to finish up the interior wall framing. Moving from my experience building a DIY shed to framing an actual home has been a massive reality check. I’m learning that in the world of professional construction, "perfect" is often secondary to "practical," and I’m sharing every revelation I pick up from the pros along the way. I’ve framed walls before, but they were usually for small sheds where "close enough" was good enough. This is different. This is my actual home in Bryson City, North Carolina, and every mistake I make now is a mistake I’ll have to live with (literally). In the first half of today’s episode, my dad and I take on the challenge of framing our first interior wall solo. The goal? Don't repeat the mistakes of the past. No twisted studs, no "good enough" corners—just pure, square framing. Then, the real pros arrive. I’ve got my friends from Ellis Earthworksand Custom Homes come to help me finish the rest of the interior walls. These guys are a classic Southern Mountain crew—fast, incredibly skilled, and hilarious to be around. They’ve been teaching me the trade, and in this video, we’re sharing the framing tips and tricks that make the difference between an amateur build and a professional house. Let’s get to work! This week we installed the roof trusses on our mountain home — completely by hand, no crane, no machine. I got to be right in the middle of it, climbing through the trusses as they went up and tying everything together. It was equal parts sketchy and exhilarating. Balancing, moving, and working in some pretty precarious positions gave me a whole new respect for how much coordination and focus this kind of framing takes. I learned a ton on this one. And getting to do it alongside a crew that’s not only incredibly skilled, but also hilarious and hardworking, made it one of the most fun days we’ve had on this build. Let’s get to work! This week we finish framing the second floor of our mountain home — building the final exterior walls, constructing the stairs, and sheathing everything so it’s finally ready for roof trusses. But more than just progress on the structure, this episode is about what it feels like to work alongside a crew that genuinely cares about doing great work. The pace is fast, the standards are high, and every day we’re seeing real, physical change take shape. I’m still learning. I’m still making mistakes. We wrapped the first floor, set the floor trusses, and suddenly most of the work was happening without solid ground under our feet. I didn’t realize how exposed framing feels before the flooring goes down—carrying lumber, moving tools, and trying to keep up while working over open gaps. The crew is completely at home up there. I’m… learning. This week was about adjusting to a new level of intensity, trusting the process, and getting more comfortable doing things that felt sketchy at first—because that’s what building this place is going to require. I showed up thinking I had a decent handle on how this phase of the build would go. By the end of the day, I realized how much I didn’t know—and how fast a good crew can move when they know exactly what they’re doing. This episode is mostly me trying to keep up, asking a lot of questions, and learning more in one day than I ever have about how a building actually comes together. The guys were patient, funny, and incredibly skilled, and watching the load-bearing walls of the first floor go up this fast made the project feel real in a way it hadn’t yet. This week we built the first wall of our home — but it’s going in right up against a steep bank, and that adds a layer of risk we can’t ignore. The site isn’t ideal but this structure is going to do a lot for us over the next few years, and that forced us into a compromise we’ve thought long and hard about. Working with a foundation crew, I learned how to lay block and we committed to a decision that becomes permanent the moment concrete goes in. Once this wall is filled, there’s no undo — so we need to get this right. Huge thanks to the crews who helped make this happen — links to everyone involved below. This episode follows a week where we had to slow down, face an earlier decision, and reckon with what learning on the fly really looks like when you’re doing this together. It also comes at a turning point. With our workshop build about to begin — the biggest and most important project we’ve taken on so far — this week felt like a final checkpoint before everything gets more serious. After our generator was stolen, it became clear that being remote doesn’t automatically make you safe. It just means help is a long way away if something goes wrong. So in this episode, I’m finally taking security seriously and putting systems in place to stop a future intruder before they ever get close. This isn’t about paranoia or turning our land into a fortress. It’s about being realistic, learning from a hard lesson, and protecting the tools and equipment that let us build this homestead and document the process. I walk through my security strategy in order of priority — explaining why each step matters and showing exactly what I’m installing as I go. If you live on a rural property, store tools on site, or are building far from town, this is the side of homesteading people don’t talk about enough. New to the channel? I do the research, watch the videos, and think I understand what I’m about to do… and then I actually start — and realize I’m still pretty clueless. This week, I’m finishing the LP SmartSide siding on the shed, and it’s a perfect example of that process. Nothing felt natural at first. Every step was slow, awkward, and inefficient. But as the days went on, repetition started to matter, things began to click, and by the end I finally felt comfortable with the work. That learning curve — going from uncertainty to confidence through doing — is something I’ve come to really appreciate about building this place. Along the way, we also took time to step away from the work: hiking a trail right next to our property with views into the Smoky Mountains, wandering through a festive downtown Bryson City, and visiting a local farm (including some very cool Scottish Highland cows). Those moments are part of the rhythm of this season for us — building, learning, and raising a family here in the mountains. This episode isn’t about perfection or shortcuts. It’s about showing up, sticking with it, and getting a little better — one project at a time. New to the channel? I was planning to finish insulating the shed and finally start getting the siding installed… but instead we woke up to the first big snow of the season, and my dad ended up in the hospital overnight with arm pain that could’ve been something serious. So in this episode, we’re trying to make progress wherever we can. I wrap up the roof insulation, we start installing the trim and siding for the very first time, and I quickly realize just how steep the learning curve is. We only manage to finish one wall, but it felt like a win after the week we had. We also squeeze in a little family time, take the girls fishing, cook up some fresh trout, and say goodbye to my parents as they head home. Not the week we expected… but we kept moving forward. This week winter suddenly became very real for us. I think everyone should have Strapinno ratchet straps in their vehicle! To get your hands on this amazing product click here: https://amz.cx/3Vor And check out Strapinno's website here: https://strapinno.com/ A cold spell is moving in fast, and even though we just spent our first week living on the property, it’s clear we’re not ready for freezing temperatures. So we shifted gears and focused on everything that has to be protected before the cold hit. My shed — which is both our workshop and my office — has been brutally cold in the mornings, so my dad and I installed the soffits and insulated the roof to finally make it usable. We also insulated the well and wrapped the exposed water line and filter leading into the trailer so nothing freezes when temperatures drop. And before the ground hardened, we spread the last bit of seed on areas of the land we hadn’t finished yet. My parents arrived at the start of the week, which meant a ton of help on these projects… and a lot more fun. They joined us for something we’d been looking forward to for weeks: taking Isabella on the Polar Express here in Bryson City. She was thrilled right up until Santa walked in — then she absolutely lost it. One of the funniest family memories we’ve had in a long time. New to the channel? This week we finally move onto our mountain property and start settling into life on the ridge. After spending months preparing the land — clearing trees, grading, running utilities, and shaping a flat spot — it feels good to wake up here and actually live on the place we’ve been working on for so long. We get the trailer set up, organize the odds and ends from the campground, set up the girls’ play tent, and begin figuring out our daily rhythm up here. I also take on one important project before winter: tilling and seeding the main flat so we can get grass established and avoid a muddy mess once the cold, wet weather hits. Isabella helped me spread the straw, which made the whole job feel a lot more meaningful. There’s also a fun break from the work as Desiree finishes the girls’ Halloween costumes, and we all head into town as our little “biker gang.” Life on the mountain is starting to take shape, and we’re excited to share what living here actually looks like as we continue building our homestead. Last week we broke ground — literally — starting the massive job of trenching for power and water. Now, in this episode, we’re finishing that work, backfilling, and laying down gravel for the first time. It’s a huge step forward — the property suddenly feels more livable and more real than ever before. But with that progress comes some growing pains. I’ve been pushing hard to get everything ready on my own, and I’m starting to realize I might need to bring in help if we’re going to keep the momentum going. This episode is the middle chapter in our three-part storyline about getting power, water, and septic ready so our family can finally move up the mountain and call this place home. Next week, we’ll wrap up the electrical and well hookups — the final step before we can finally live on the land full-time. New to the channel? We’re Jordan and Desiree, and we’re building our mountain homestead from scratch, documenting every success, mistake, and lesson along the way. 👉 Subscribe and follow our journey! @ProjectAtticus ➤ Love our videos?
