We take you dock-to-dock through the Wrangell harbor, sharing working boats, liveaboard life in Alaska, commercial fishing vessels, abandoned boats, and the quiet rhythm of winter settling in along the docks. Along the way, we also share a relaxed Day 18 update on our plan to head north—where things stand with our Alaska boat journey, how winter weather and short daylight are influencing the timeline, and why we’re letting the season lead instead of forcing a Gulf of Alaska crossing. We also run into our friend, a commercial fisherman, processing stripe shrimp on his fishing boat—one of those classic harbor moments that reminds us why we love Alaska harbor life and working waterfronts. The small Swahili coastal town called Lamu is UNESCO heritage listed site of cultural significance. The labyrinth of narrow laneways is crowded with people and donkeys going about their business, not for the tourists (who are few and far between) but carrying out the commerce that’s been going on here for a couple of millennia. And for a few days each November the largely Muslim community celebrates their culture and races their dhows. These craft which first appeared on this coast five centuries before Jesus recruited his first fisherman, were designed primarily as trading vessels. They have a characteristic lateen sail, which hangs off a long boom, suspended at an angle from a short forward leaning mast. They are objects of beauty, but more importantly they are highly effective sailing craft, chiselled into their current form by two and a half millennia of practical experience. In Lamu a few dhows still work under sail, delivering coral blocks, salt, sand and the occasional tourist to where they need to be. Globally, the Indian Ocean Dhow is one of only a dozen types of wind powered craft that are still used for genuine commerce or subsistence. In November each year, just as the easterly trade winds become established, the dhows are transformed to race! There solid masts and booms are replaced with lighter racing versions, new sails are sewn from Indian cotton panels, and their hulls are patched and painted with whatever is available. With minuscule budgets, they rely far more on ingenuity and generations of unwritten seafaring lore, than technology to make each boat go fast! The lateen rig is labour intensive and the crews of twenty five or more crowd aboard a 30ft boat and sing as they wrestle their way around the 20 nautical mile course. Continual bailing is needed to stop the dhows sinking while a respected afterguard perches on a small decked area above the transom, elegant in their embroidered kofia caps, nursing the tiller and scanning the water for changes in wind and tide.

In the previous episode I was taken into custody and taken to the police station. After being questioned, the contents of my bag were itemized by the police as seizure. In those contents were two small bags of weed. That was enough for the police to hold me in custody in the local jail. It wasn't until 24hrs later that I was taken in a van and to my boat with what the police had been waiting for. A search warrant. After a thorough search, nothing was found. The police took me back to the station and back in the cell. I was devastated. After an hour, back in a police van and taken to court where again I waited in a cell to be finally set free. Today we wrap up an incredible week of sailing in the British Virgin Islands! ⛵🌴 We lifted anchor at Jost Van Dyke one last time and set a course toward Tortola’s beautiful West End. Soper’s Hole is one of the most colorful spots in the BVI, so we stopped in for lunch at the iconic Pusser’s Rum Bar and enjoyed the views before the bittersweet part of the trip… returning the boat to Road Town. After an unforgettable charter aboard this beautiful catamaran, we spent one final night on board, soaking up the last bit of island life before heading out the next morning. Il NAVTEX (NAVigational TEleX) è un servizio internazionale automatico che trasmette via radio bollettini di navigazione, meteo e informazioni urgenti sulla sicurezza marittima direttamente alle navi, usando frequenze sulle onde medie (518 kHz per l'inglese, 490 kHz per la lingua locale) e onde corte (4209.5 kHz). Si usa un ricevitore dedicato (integrato o collegato a PC) che stampa automaticamente i messaggi (Avvisi ai Naviganti, Meteo, Ghiaccio, SAR, ecc.) o si può utilizzare un ricevitore dedicato bluetooth come il nasa marine bt3 mostrato nel video che permette di visualizzare gli MSI (marittime security information) direttamente sullo schermo dello smartphone o del tablet, permettendo di selezionare le aree e i tipi di avvisi da ricevere per rimanere aggiornati e garantire la sicurezza in mare. il NAVTEX ci fornisce informazioni essenziali (meteo, pericoli, avvisi ai naviganti) in modo automatico e gratuito, essendo parte integrante del sistema GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System). Frequenze: 518 kHz (internazionale, inglese), 490 kHz (nazionale/locale), 4209.5 kHz (mondiale). Tipi di Messaggi: Codificati per tipo (es. 'A' per avvisi navigazione, 'B' per meteo, 'D' per SAR/pirateria). Si imposta il ricevitore in base alla propria posizione e interesse selezionando Area (NAVAREA es. Mediterraneo).
