In this episode I need to move my boat to a marina to haul out. As always I am under a lot of time pressure. The big problem is that with these conditions, it is dangerous to leave my mooring ball - but it might be even more dangerous to stay. _________________________ ⚓ Life on the Showgirl is my journey toward one of the toughest solo sailing races on the planet: the Golden Globe Race — sailed solo, non-stop, and without modern technology. If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ve seen the setbacks, the delays, and everything it took to get to this crossing. What I didn’t share as much… was how scary it actually felt right before leaving. I wasn’t sure I was ready. But I took the leap anyway (with a little push I probably needed 😅) And it turned into one of the best experiences of my life. This wasn’t just a crossing. It was realizing that I was ready all along. And the best part is… you got to be part of it. 🌊 ⚓ Life on the Showgirl is my journey toward one of the toughest solo sailing races on the planet: the Golden Globe Race — sailed solo, non-stop, and without modern technology. Love that — we keep the depth, just add a little wink 😄 🎬 Written Hook The bag I hope I never need. ✍🏼 Caption (funny + real) This is my grab bag. Also known as: “something has gone very wrong.” It’s not about packing everything… it’s about packing what actually matters. First aid (nothing fancy, just enough to not panic). Ways to communicate. Ways to be found. Water, food, something warm… and apparently a toothbrush, because priorities. PLB, EPIRB, radios, tracker… basically all the “please come find me” devices. And then the random things that somehow make sense in this context. A bucket. A leatherman. High calorie snacks like I’m about to run a marathon. Putting this together is a bit surreal. Because you’re preparing for a situation you really don’t want to be in… but also making sure that if it happens, you’re not completely useless. Out here, you don’t rely on luck. You pack a bag… just in case 😅 ⚓ Life on the Showgirl is my journey toward one of the toughest solo sailing races on the planet: the Golden Globe Race — sailed solo, non-stop, and without modern technology. Showering on a sailboat is… a process. You start with a plan. A system. A strategy. Fresh water to wet the hair (very important, my hair needs to get hydrated before the long showering process). Then the real work begins… salt water + shampoo. Again. And again. And again. Somewhere in between you remember you also have a body to wash. Then conditioner. Maybe twice. Then back to fresh water like it’s luxury spa treatment. All of this, in a moving bathroom, with a bucket, trying not to fall over. Water temperature? Depends on the ocean’s mood that day. It’s not glamorous… but it works. And honestly, when you’re done, it feels like the best shower in the world. ⚓ Life on the Showgirl is my journey toward one of the toughest solo sailing races on the planet: the Golden Globe Race — sailed solo, non-stop, and without modern technology. Day 32. Today started rough. Really rough. Last night was gusty with squalls coming through constantly. I didn’t sleep at all. I was just up and down the whole night in full rain gear, reefing and unreefing. I wanted to go fast, so I kept trying to use the wind between the gusts, pushing when I could, then reefing again when the squalls hit. It worked… but it was exhausting. By the time morning came, I was completely drained. I had planned to have a productive morning, but that didn’t happen. I was just too tired. I ended up sleeping and resting instead, which honestly was what I needed. Later on, I started my little cleanup mission. Of course, I waited until it got properly hot, which didn’t help. At some point I genuinely felt like I might faint, so I had to take it slow and not push too much. So not the most efficient day… but still, things got moving a little. And the big thing is this: there are only 300 nautical miles left. Which is kind of crazy to even say. After everything, all the days, all the routines, all the ups and downs… it’s right there now. And I honestly could not be more excited. 🌊 ⚓ Life on the Showgirl is my journey toward one of the toughest solo sailing races on the planet: the Golden Globe Race — sailed solo, non-stop, and without modern technology. Part 2: Finding the exact moment the sun is at its highest ☀️ This is where it gets a bit more precise. It’s not enough to see the sun at the top. It looks like it stays there for a few minutes… but that’s not accurate enough. We need the exact second. So instead of trying to catch that moment directly, I work around it. I take a measurement about an hour before the sun reaches its highest point and lock that angle in the sextant. Then I wait. About an hour after the sun has passed its peak, I measure again without changing the sextant… and wait until the sun comes back to that exact same angle. Now I have two moments in time where the sun was at the same height. The highest point is exactly in the middle of those two times. That’s the moment I need. From there, it’s calculation time… and this is where knowing if I’m east or west really matters. I break that down in the video. ⚓ Life on the Showgirl is my journey toward one of the toughest solo sailing races on the planet: the Golden Globe Race — sailed solo, non-stop, and without modern technology. Today was one of those days where I had a plan… and did absolutely none of it. It’s been insanely warm. Around 32 degrees, the warmest it’s been so far. And at first, there was basically no wind at all. Just heat sitting on top of everything. No movement, no airflow, nothing to cool it down. We were barely moving. At some point I changed the sails and adjusted course to more of a beam reach just to get some wind in and create a bit of speed. It pushed me a little too far north, but honestly, I needed it. Even just feeling some wind again made a huge difference. But yeah… the heat completely drained me today. I tried to get going, tried to do things, but at some point I basically just gave up and lay down. It honestly felt like I passed out for a while just because it was too much. So not a very productive day. Tomorrow the plan is simple: wake up earlier, get things done before the heat kicks in, and then survive the rest of the day if needed. It should also be a bit windier, which will help both with speed and just feeling human again. The only downside is that with how slow today was, we’re now a bit behind schedule. It’s starting to look like I might not make it in before Tuesday. Not ideal, but also… that’s sailing. Some days you push forward, some days you just get through. ⚓ Life on the Showgirl is my journey toward one of the toughest solo sailing races on the planet: the Golden Globe Race — sailed solo, non-stop, and without modern technology. Part 1: Finding where I am using only the sun ☀️ No GPS, no screens, just timing and angles. The goal here is simple: catch the sun at its highest point. First, I check the Nautical Almanac for the meridian passage… but that’s for Greenwich. I’m not there, so I adjust. The sun moves 15° per hour. I’m roughly 30° west → that’s about 2 hours difference. So now I know when to start paying attention. As that time gets closer, I grab the sextant and start measuring the sun’s height. Over and over again. At some point, it stops climbing. That’s the moment. It hangs there for a few minutes, just long enough to get a clean reading… and that’s where the real calculations begin. That’s how I start figuring out where I am, in the middle of the ocean, using nothing but the sun. Part 2 coming next 🌊 ⚓ Life on the Showgirl is my journey toward one of the toughest solo sailing races on the planet: the Golden Globe Race — sailed solo, non-stop, and without modern technology. Today started a bit anxious. After what happened with the spinnaker pole last night, I woke up with that feeling of needing to double-check everything. I went through it again this morning, inspected it more carefully, and that helped calm me down a bit. But at the same time, it definitely switched something on in my head. A reminder to stay sharp. Last night I also heard something fall onto the boat, which didn’t help. In the dark it always feels worse. This morning I found a U-bolt and immediately thought, “where is this coming from?” Luckily, it turned out to be from the spinnaker halyard. It had just come loose and dropped. No real issue, but in the moment it felt like it could have been something more serious. And I think that’s the point. Out here, you can’t get too comfortable. Even if I’m starting to feel more at ease, more in rhythm, it doesn’t mean things won’t happen. The boat still needs attention. Constantly. So today felt like a good reminder. Stay alert. Stay on top of things. Don’t assume everything is fine just because it has been. Yes, the spinnaker pole is broken, and that’s going to cost me a bit. But at the same time, this is exactly why I’m out here. To test the boat. To find the weak points. To learn what works and what doesn’t. To break things, and then understand how to fix them. Every problem is a lesson. And today was one of those days where that became very clear again. 🌊 coordinates: 13 52.588N 55 40.343W log: 3477,9 nm distance to go: 522,1 nm ⚓ Life on the Showgirl is my journey toward one of the toughest solo sailing races on the planet: the Golden Globe Race — sailed solo, non-stop, and without modern technology. Taking down the spinnaker solo… something that felt way bigger in my head than it actually is. Turns out it’s just: Turn slightly downwind so the main blankets it Let the sheet go and let it flap Hoist the staysail to take some pressure off Open the hatch Stuff everything down and deal with it later Done. I don’t know why I was so scared of this one… but I guess that’s the thing with sailing alone, you build it up until you just have to go and do it. Another squally day. They’ve been coming through nonstop, one after the other. Dark clouds rolling in, wind picking up, then easing again… all day. It makes everything feel a bit hectic, like you’re constantly one step away from needing to adjust something. So I decided to play it safe early. Two reefs in the main, two in the genoa. Just settled the boat down and took the pressure off. After that, everything felt a lot more manageable, and I didn’t have to keep second-guessing every gust or cloud passing by. Today ended up being more of an office day than anything else. Spent most of it working on sponsors. Reaching out, pitching, following up, trying to get conversations going. It’s one of those things that doesn’t feel very “Atlantic crossing” when you’re doing it, but it’s such a big part of making this whole project possible. And honestly… it matters. A lot. I still squeezed in a bit of a workout and some singing, as usual. Those small routines keep the day balanced. But yeah, overall, today was a work day. And tomorrow might be a big one. If everything goes as planned, by sunset I’ll be turning north. Which feels a bit crazy to even say. 🌊 ⚓ Life on the Showgirl is my journey toward one of the toughest solo sailing races on the planet: the Golden Globe Race — sailed solo, non-stop, and without modern technology. Long before weather apps and satellites, sailors had to read the ocean and the sky. And the truth is… those signs are still there. Changes in the clouds, the pressure in the air, the way the wind behaves, even the color of the sky can all hint that something bigger is on its way. Out here, you learn to pay attention. Technology is incredibly helpful, but nature usually gives you the first warning if you know where to look. ⚓ Life on the Showgirl is my journey toward one of the toughest solo sailing races on the planet: the Golden Globe Race — sailed solo, non-stop, and without modern technology. After a rather down day yesterday, today was all about just getting things done. I made a list this morning of everything I wanted to achieve, and then I just started ticking things off one by one. Nothing fancy, just moving through the list and doing the next thing that needed to be done. And it worked. We’ve also been sailing fast today. It actually looks like we might set a new speed record for the trip, which feels pretty great. The boat is moving well and everything just feels… efficient. And the big milestone today: I passed 3,000 nautical miles on this journey. Which means there are only about 1,000 nautical miles left. That’s kind of crazy to think about. One week from now I should be there. It suddenly feels very real that this crossing is coming to an end. Apart from that I’ve just been moving through the normal things. I did my sextant work, cooked some food, and spent some time trying to figure out the V radio. Slowly getting more comfortable with that as well. All of it happening while the boat just keeps cruising west. After yesterday’s slower day, today felt like a good reset. Simple, productive, and moving forward. 🌊⛵️ coordinates: 12 53.150N 48 43.915W log: 3057,5 nm distance to go: 942,5 nm ⚓ Life on the Showgirl is my journey toward one of the toughest solo sailing races on the planet: the Golden Globe Race — sailed solo, non-stop, and without modern technology. When you’re sailing alone, falling overboard isn’t really a situation you “solve”. You prevent it. Being clipped in. Wearing a life vest. And carrying a PLB so someone can find you if things go wrong. Mine never leaves me. It’s from Jotron and it’s one of those pieces of gear you hope you never need… but you definitely want to have. There are other options, but personally, I’m not convinced that’s a realistic option. Out here, the real safety system is simple: Stay attached to the boat. ⚓ Life on the Showgirl is my journey toward one of the toughest solo sailing races on the planet: the Golden Globe Race — sailed solo, non-stop, and without modern technology.
