We did a quick dingy trip across the harbour yesterday for an impressive dive. The dingy was brilliant with about double the floor space of a RIB, it made having gear aboard a breeze. We also found it much easier to get in an out of than a RIB. The Airbuddy was also fantastic. So good for this type of diving. Easy and light with more than enough dive time. Now I just need to plug it in to charge the battery up again. Love it.

JM collects eggs again and has to face off with Peewee the rooster. After being given treats and locked outside, Peewee charges the barrier and attacks JM. The rooster is returned outside while JM freshens up the nest boxes with new straw. After a rather down day yesterday, today was all about just getting things done. I made a list this morning of everything I wanted to achieve, and then I just started ticking things off one by one. Nothing fancy, just moving through the list and doing the next thing that needed to be done. And it worked. We’ve also been sailing fast today. It actually looks like we might set a new speed record for the trip, which feels pretty great. The boat is moving well and everything just feels… efficient. And the big milestone today: I passed 3,000 nautical miles on this journey. Which means there are only about 1,000 nautical miles left. That’s kind of crazy to think about. One week from now I should be there. It suddenly feels very real that this crossing is coming to an end. Apart from that I’ve just been moving through the normal things. I did my sextant work, cooked some food, and spent some time trying to figure out the V radio. Slowly getting more comfortable with that as well. All of it happening while the boat just keeps cruising west. After yesterday’s slower day, today felt like a good reset. Past Bab el-Mandeb, the wind finally arrived. After days of preparation in Djibouti — cleaning the boat, servicing the engines, and loading 900 liters of fuel in jerry cans — we set off toward one of the most notorious passages in the world: the Gulf of Aden. The moment we cleared the harbor, the conditions changed. Thirty knots of wind filled in on a beam reach and suddenly we were sailing fast, pushing northwest to stay clear of Somali waters before joining the Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC) used by commercial ships crossing between the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. With the Bab el-Mandeb finally behind us, we’re making miles under sail — but we’re still on high alert as we pass between the coasts of Yemen and Somalia. Cargo ships share the corridor, naval patrols monitor the region, and the Indian Ocean is beginning to build as we approach the end of the lane. The strait may be behind us… but this passage isn’t over yet.
