► On the second-hand market for boats under 40 feet, the Lagoon 380 has become the must-have. Admittedly, this bestseller, which saw more than 900 examples built, has aged pretty well and offers remarkable comfort for its size... but for budgets just over €100,000, there are other models to consider, such as the Athena 38 by Fountaine Pajot, which offers two advantages: it is more affordable than the Lagoon and is faster under sail! ► Launched at the La Rochelle boat show in September 1994, the Athena 38 was positioned between the Tobago 35 and the Venezia 42. All the models in this second generation, designed by Joubert/Nivelt, are characterized by their blunt bows, very rounded shapes on the inside (the miracle that polyester GRP must have been for naval architects long familiar with wood, steel, aluminum, and chined bilges!) and finally the overhanging coachroof cap, which is the one feature that would be retained and still remains today. ► Lightweight and well-canvased, the Athena 38 is lively and fun to sail from the single helm station – positioned on the aft face of the coachroof, on the starboard side. Obviously, the relatively short length and skeg keels reduced do it no favors when close-hauled in bigger seas, but in all other conditions, this little catamaran will surprise more than one helmsman with its performance - which can be boosted by decent sails and the installation of folding propellers. ► The model Graham presents to us is from 2001 and is a three-cabin version - the entire starboard hull is dedicated to the owner. The nacelle offers a rounded saloon that can easily accommodate six people, a chart table/desk, and a U-shaped galley. Logically, there is only one bathroom per hull. On the starboard side, Graham has a fully equipped workshop. Admittedly, the comfort is somewhat rustic, the sill at the entrance to the nacelle is a higher than we see today, the sugarscoops are not particularly wide and the paneling is a little worn in places... but for a nearly 25-year-old multihull purchased for €115,000, the Athena 38 still has a lot to offer and, above all, can take you anywhere: An excellent base for refit! ► Technical specifications: Builder: Fountaine Pajot Architect: Joubert/Nivelt Interior design: Olivier Flahault Length: 38’ (11.6 m) Beam: 20’8” (6.3 m) Draft: 3’1” (0.95 m) Air draft: 59’ (17.85 m) Light displacement: 12,125 lbs (5.5 t) Sail area: 947 sq ft (88 m²) Motors: 2 x 20 HP Fuel: 180 l Water: 360 l Second-hand price: from €100,000 ex-tax ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! ► This new model from the fishing range only just arrived in time to make its world premiere at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, as the cargo ship transporting it from China was running two and a half weeks behind schedule... ► In the end, we were able to discover the 36 Molokai, a powercat designed primarily for fishing but offering enough comfort - with multiple seats and, above all, a cabin with a queen-size bed and bathroom - to allow for other activities such as day trips or coastal cruising. Even though the shipyard has deliberately limited itself to two powerful outboards (300 to 500 HP) rather than four, the 36 Molokai still exceeds 52 knots at top speed and ensures a cruising speed of 40 knots. ► Technical specifications: Builder: Aquila Length: 36’5” (11.1 m) Beam: 11’9” (3.59 m) Draft: 3’6” (1.07 m) with engines lowered Air draft: 9’ (2.74 m) Displacement: 12,888 lbs (5,846 kg) Engines: 2 x 300/400/500 HP outboard Fuel: 508 US gal (1,924 l) Water: 21 US gal (80 l) Berths: 2 Maximum number of persons on board: 16 Price: $ 498,000 ex-tax ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! ► This 40th edition of the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers brought the 32 multihulls we saw in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, safely to port after a beautiful 2,700-mile transatlantic crossing. We rejoin our fleet in Saint Lucia. ► To begin with, a presentation of the setting is in order! We are here in Saint Lucia, a small island in the Lesser Antilles, located between Martinique to the north and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to the south. Saint Lucia, in addition to having been a former French colony, then British, and finally an independent country since 1979, is the only state in the world to bear a woman’s name. This island, with its rugged terrain, covers an area of 620 km² and has a population of nearly 200,000 inhabitants. ► Exposed to the easterly trade winds, it is on the west coast that the best sheltered anchorages are found. Among them, one of the finest is undoubtedly Rodney Bay, at the very north of the island. This vast anchorage is further complemented by a lagoon, a true hurricane hole. It is here that a lively 253-berth marina and very comprehensive technical facilities have been established. Much earlier, the site was a small American naval air base; the current infrastructure was developed in the early 1980s, and the ARC has been calling here since 1990. ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! ► In Amsterdam, we met up with Stephen Weatherley, CEO and founder of Archipelago Yachts, and he presented the shipyard’s current direction and unveiled their current projects. His vision is based on an approach that places engineering, design, and propulsion systems at the forefront, applied to the demanding market sector of aluminum powercats. ► Based in Hampshire, on the south coast of England, Archipelago Yachts designs and builds motor catamarans from 40 to 80 feet in length, with construction on the Isle of Wight. This organization allows for strong continuity between design, engineering, and manufacturing, in an industrial environment with a long maritime tradition. ► From the outset, Weatherley was keen to emphasize the fundamental choice of aluminum: “We exclusively build aluminum catamarans. The entire range is designed around this material because it allows us to work on the structure, durability, and integration of systems right from the start.” ► He also champions the material for its structural qualities, longevity, and recyclability. The platforms are designed from a global perspective, with particular attention being paid to the architecture of the hulls, weight distribution, and systems’ installation. ►Propulsion is one of the shipyard’s major areas of development. Archipelago now offers several configurations to suit different uses. “We offer conventional diesel, diesel-electric hybrid, and we are about to launch a fully electric model,” Weatherley told us. The yard’s powercats are designed to accommodate these different types of propulsion without major modifications. The coachroof is well-sized to accommodate solar panels, capable of covering part of the energy needs on board, particularly for domestic use. ► Going up the rig to work requires stable, comfortable, and reliable support. However, conventional mast steps are often hard, slippery, noisy, or prone to aging. With the SoftStep+, manufacturer One Palma offers a much more suitable solution, which was recognized with a 2025 DAME Award in the Deck Equipment category. ► The SoftStep+ has been designed as a genuine workstation. Its curved surface naturally conforms to the arch of the foot and incorporates interchangeable soft-touch foam, designed to remain comfortable over time. Opening and closing are achieved by a magnetic system, without mechanical play, making it easy to operate, even with one hand. During our conversation at Metstrade, David, the product's engineer and designer, demonstrated how easy it is to unfold and fold the device, without any effort. ► Another unique feature of the SoftStep+ is its material: 3D-printed Ti6Al4V titanium. This choice eliminates the risk of corrosion, reduces weight (297 g/10½ oz.), and guarantees high mechanical strength. Each step can support up to 150 kg/330 lbs of working load, making it safe for extended use such as climbing the mast when short-handed. ► One Palma has also integrated MWSS, a dual-function system that allows the SoftStep+ to be used as a passive anchor point for working at height or as a 2:1 purchase for hoisting equipment from the deck. ► We already encountered BlueNav at the La Rochelle boat show, but we saw them again at Metstrade, this time with not one, but two new products designed to consolidate their electric propulsion ecosystem: the BlueNav app and the Precision+ GPS. ► The app now allows for more precise control in the 0-5 knot range, where most close-quarter maneuvers take place. Hugo, whom we met at the booth, describes a system capable of maintaining a chosen position and moving the boat in increments of about twenty centimeters (8 inches). This virtual anchoring mode opens up interesting possibilities for approaches from the bow or stern of a multihull, or in areas where lateral movement has to remain very precise. ► GPS Precision+ is the other new product. This multi-constellation GNSS receiver (Galileo, GPS, Glonass) aims to stabilize the course and position during slow maneuvers, where generic GPS devices struggle to provide a clear signal. Its compact size (16 cm / 6.3 in., approx. 600 g / 1.3 lbs) makes it easy to integrate, while improving the quality of the data sent to the control system. Using the GPS Precision+ aboard a multihull therefore immediately results in better position holding. ► Deck equipment manufacturer Wichard unveiled a new anchor swivel at Metstrade, previewing it ahead of its commercial release. ► The purpose of this device is simple: to make anchor retrieval more reliable and avoid those frequent situations where the anchor comes up misaligned and refuses to sit properly on the bow roller. For multihulls, where the height of the bows and the geometry of the bow roller can sometimes make anchor handling tricky, this type of mechanical assistance is particularly useful. ► Available in three sizes, the swivel covers chain diameters from 6 to 14 mm and fits most anchors on the market. It is made of 316L stainless steel, an alloy chosen for its corrosion resistance, which is essential in this critical location of the ground tackle. The unit is positioned between the chain and the anchor, replacing a conventional swivel without adding excessive thickness. ► Its distinctive feature is its asymmetrical design. As Eric Butreau, Wichard’s Marketing and Communications Manager, explains: “The idea is to naturally guide the rotation of the anchor. Even if it arrives poorly oriented, the swivel realigns it with the bow roller.” ► This automatic repositioning limits jolts on the windlass, avoids the need for manual intervention, and smooths out the whole sequence of weighing anchor, even in bigger seas or when the multihull gets caught by a gust. ► Installation is deliberately simple: two pins to remove, a threadlocking glue to apply, and the part is in place in a matter of minutes. It is suitable for both new boats and refits, without any modification to the bow roller or chain lead. ► It is scheduled to go on sale in the first quarter of 2026, with a recommended retail price starting at €90 including VAT for the smallest model. ► We didn’t manage to catch up with Honda at Metstrade, due to conflicting schedules, but their major new product, a new V6 engine, was unveiled at the show. We finally got to see this new outboard at the Paris Nautic Show with Thomas Delavenne, regional manager of Honda Marine France. ► The engine, available in 200, 225, and 250 horsepower versions, features a completely redesigned look. Understated, more contemporary, and now consistent with the more powerful BF350, the new V6 significantly modernizes the range. While the engine is very attractive, it’s the internal evolution that really makes an impression. Honda has reworked the injection system, which historically could have been improved in certain generations. The result is enhanced acceleration, smoother power and, according to the brand, up to 20% less fuel consumption in certain speed ranges. The exhaust has also been optimized, significantly reducing noise, a sensitive issue on family boats and outboard-powered multihulls. ► Another notable advance is full compatibility with the BF350’s rigging. Controls, wiring harnesses, and electronic logic are harmonized, simplifying original equipment installation and refining twin-engine setups. ► Honda also emphasizes accessories, a feature that Thomas is keen to highlight. The new electronic controls offer a more precise and fluid feel. The electronics now include useful features such as trim support, which automatically adjusts the trim according to speed, and auto-tilt, which raises the engine with a double click without remaining pressed. These are small improvements, but they really change life on board. ► The Honda Pro range of oils and consumables now accompanies these engines, designed to stabilize performance and facilitate maintenance.
