► From offshore racing to cruising, the world's leading manufacturer of navigation electronics is essential aboard many multihulls. Founded in 1956 in Lymington, England, B&G – short for Brookes & Gatehouse – has gradually established itself as a benchmark in sailing instrumentation. Now part of the Navico Group, a subsidiary of Brunswick Corporation, the brand leverages a global ecosystem, with technical teams located in the main sailing areas. ► This network allows B&G to support shipyards for original equipment installations as well as retrofitting multihulls already in operation. ► B&G's history is closely linked to offshore racing. Navigation tools are developed and tested there to provide reliable data and ensure continuous updates that are immediately usable on board. These technologies are then adapted for cruising and recreational boating, with simplified interfaces but without any loss of information. Certain systems, like Hercules, have left their mark on generations of sailors. ► Today, instruments, autopilot, C-MAP chartplotters, and radar are designed to work together within a single onboard network. Current solutions extend this logic. Zeus systems now form the core of the network. Nemesis displays, dedicated to providing information, allow for configurable readings of key data according to the navigation phase, from fine-tuning to standby. We will soon return to these systems in more detail, particularly the Zeus SRX. ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! ► 22 years after Jean-Luc Van Den Heede, the young Breton sailor is welcomed as a hero in Brest: aboard his large trimaran MACSF, he has just broken the record for a round-the-world voyage against the prevailing winds by 28 days. We were able to welcome him in the harbor and share his first moments ashore. ► Last summer, while Guirec Soudée's transatlantic warm-up with the famous YouTuber Inoxtag (see MW203) may have resembled a vacation, it was in fact to prepare both man and his boat for an extreme project – a solo, non-stop circumnavigation of the globe via the three great capes… but not in the usual direction. This time, the approach is to head straight for Cape Horn, followed by Cape Leeuwin and the Cape of Good Hope, which must be left to starboard. ► The Breton sailor thus left his home port of Lorient at the end of December aboard his Ultim MACSF. Two days before Christmas, the solo sailor crossed the starting line of the round-the-world race between the island of Ouessant and the Cape Lizard. Ahead of his bows lies a 22,000-nautical mile direct route against wind and currents. While Guirec is a particularly seasoned and determined sailor - he has already completed a double transatlantic row - the challenge of this round-the-world voyage is colossal. Even the greatest sailors, like Thomas Coville, fresh from his record-breaking Jules Verne Trophy, readily admits: "It's a challenge that impresses me and that I think I would never have been able to take on. It's extraordinary. I don't know if people really realize what he's doing, but it truly defies everything in terms of adventure." ► One can only imagine the intense pressure the sailor must have been under until that liberating crossing of the finish line. Well done, Guirec! ► The record for circumnavigating the world from east to west 1971 – Chay Blyth aboard British Steel (monohull) – 292 days 1994 – Mike Golding aboard Group 4 (monohull) – 161 days 2000 – Philippe Monet aboard Unnet (monohull) – 151 days 2004 – Jean-Luc Van Den Heede aboard Adrien (monohull) – 122 days 2026 – Guirec Soudée aboard MACSF (multihull) – 94 days ► Ultim MACSF: A Tried and Tested Trimaran! The Ultim MACSF was first launched in 2014 bearing the name Sodebo Ultim'... but this giant trimaran has much earlier origins, as it borrowed many elements such as the connecting arms and floats from Geronimo, a multihull launched 13 years previously. The trimaran continued its (very) long career under the names Actual Leader, Mieux, and finally Adagio before flying the colors of MACSF, a French insurance company for healthcare professionals founded in 1935. ► Technical Specifications Length: 102’ (31 m) Beam: 70’ (21.2 m) Mast height: 115’ (35 m) Maximum sail area: 7,136 sq ft (663 m²) Top speed: 43 knots ► Read our full Feature here: https://www.multihulls-world.com/articles-catamaran-trimaran/guirec-soudee-s-single-handed-non-stop-east-to-west-circumnavigation-i-practically-covered-twice-the-normal-route-but-i-got-there-in-the-end ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! ► Newcomers to sailing who have so far only experienced flashier, more expensive catamarans could well be forgiven for wondering why all winches aren’t electric. The convenience is undisputed – just wrap the sheet or halyard round the self-tailer and press the button. Surely this is just modern technology? How many of us have wind-up windows in our cars these days? ► The reasons are about space, simplicity (including having enough electricity to run them) and budget. On my boat for instance, there are half a dozen winches ranging in size up to a pair of 48s for the primaries. Apart from the fact that there simply isn’t room beneath the deck for electric winch motors, they’re in the order of four or five thousand euros each… putting them completely out of the question. ► But it’s not just about the convenience. As we get older, we’ve got to accept certain realities. Last year, my wife had surgery on her spine: a disk removed from her neck and the two vertebrae either side fused together. Winching wasn’t something on the surgeon’s list of recommended post-operative activities. As we sail mostly just the two of us, the boat has to be set up as if single-handing – especially for longer passages. ► And while I’d certainly heard of ewincher (it’s been around for a few years now), it wasn’t until meeting its creator Bruno Rabu at last year’s La Rochelle boat show that we’d really had a look at one. ► Rather than an electric winch, the ewincher is quite simply an electric winch handle. The same length as a traditional handle, it contains a battery and a brushless motor. The motor, with torque of 90 Nm and a speed of 110 rpm (for the ewincher 2 model), can be reversed with a button on the handle, meaning you can instantly switch speeds on a two-speed winch. The speed of the SE model is 83 rpm. Both models weigh 2.2 kg (less than 5 lbs) and are waterproof to IPX6. Powered by a 28V lithium-ion battery, they will last all day with intensive use before recharging: tested on a 40-footer, one charge allowed for hoisting the mainsail three times and then sheeting the genoa after tacking 40 times. Another obvious benefit is that it can be used on all the boat’s winches. ► Prices: Ewincher SE: € 1,899 Ewincher 2: € 2,399 ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! ► The first show dedicated to eco-responsible boating is taking place from March 19 to 22 in Nice, within the Old Port. No fewer than 81 exhibitors are attending this four-day event, which also features a forum with numerous conferences and round tables addressing a range of topics - regulations and environmental standards, the impact of boating on the environment, recyclable materials, innovative propulsion systems, and more. On the water, visitors can discover a day charter unit from Day One Catamarans, the Leopard 52, the FP41, the Millikan M.10, the small inflatable X-Fun from Xtramarine, as well as the Bali Catsmart, presented for the first time with hybrid propulsion. On land, key players in the “Forever Green” boating sector such as BlueNav, E-Nav Systems, Flexiteek, Integrel Solutions, Jool, Mercury Marine, Pinball Boat, and Naviwatt are showcasing their products and/or expertise. A sign that sustainable boating is also gaining ground in mainstream nautical markets, sailmakers’ stands are alongside those of insurer Pantaenius and crew marketplace specialist Vogavecmoi.com. Sea Loop Marine, led by Gilles Wagner, unveiled on the very first day of the show its upcoming Loopia - a fully electric 29-foot day boat - set to make its world premiere… at Nice Boating Tomorrow 2027! ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! ► Although the Cape Town–based shipyard Voyage Yachts has produced several models such as the 480 and 580, since 2020 its range had been reduced to the very comfortable Voyage 590, whose build quality we were able to see firsthand at the yard three years ago. ► Since last July, a more compact model, the 510, has completed the range offered by this bluewater cruising specialist. Our correspondent Jonathan was able to discover this offshore catamaran, which benefits from high freeboard and well-designed aft circulation, including dock access through a cut-out in the bulwarks and lowered side decks. ► “The 510 is first and foremost a catamaran designed to accommodate a large number of people on board in well-assumed comfort,” Jonathan reports. “At nearly 16 meters long and close to 8 meters wide, this new model offers a very pleasant living space. The cockpit is spacious, welcoming, and naturally oriented toward the outdoors. Inside, movement is fluid, the cabins are comfortable and bright, and the overall atmosphere is warm. The goal here is not to chase a ‘wow’ effect at all costs, but rather balance and coherence. Under sail, the 510 favors smooth motion with her 22 tons. She moves forward steadily, without harshness, providing a very reassuring sense of security. It’s a catamaran that puts you at ease, that supports her crew without ever being abrupt. You simply feel good on board!” ► Technical Specifications: Builder: Voyage Yachts Architect: Voyage Yachts Length: 51’10” (15.8 m) Beam: 26’11” (8.2 m) Draft: 4’11” (1.5 m) Displacement: 43,000 lbs (19.5 t) Sail area: 1,636 sq ft (152 m2) Drivetrain: 2 x 57 HP Fuel: 2 x 118 US gal (2 x 450 l) Price: $ 1,220,000 ex-tax ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! ► What a journey since the first lightweight dinghies built as early as 1976! Always led by top-level racing sailors, the Fountaine Pajot yard even ventured into windsurfing (competitive windsurfing, of course) before turning its attention to cruising catamarans. ► It was 1983 when the Louisiane was launched - an iconic model that marked the beginning of the brand’s success in this sector. Since then, the boats have steadily gained in comfort while maintaining an elegant style, first shaped by Joubert-Nivelt and then, from 1991 onward with the Marquises, by Berret-Racoupeau Yacht Design. ► Fountaine Pajot is also the first major sailing yacht builder to commit in a lasting way to electric propulsion - a step taken four years ago with the Aura 51. ► The builder will of course be present at Nice Boating Tomorrow, the international show dedicated to sustainable boating - and we will be there as well! - to present the FP41 in its ODSea version (see our full test). ► We will soon publish a full article on the story of this shipyard, which has already produced 5,000 cruising catamarans. ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! ► For the first presentation of the Aventura brand in the United States, the manufacturer chose to showcase the 38 Fly, one of the four models in the 38 family. The power catamaran, launched just over a year ago in its Sport Cruiser version, is also offered in three other versions; the Multihulls Mag community is well acquainted with the Sedan version, which graced the cover of our latest Special Motorboat Issue. The fourth model in the family will be the Sport, featuring a completely open living area. ► Let's return to the 38 Fly, which had its world premiere at the IMS: the deck layout retains the main features of the SC version – except that the galley is positioned on the exterior side – while the interior layout is very similar to the Sedan version, with a saloon to port and a galley to starboard. Access to the flybridge is via a (somewhat steep) staircase from the aft cockpit. Upstairs, there's room for 10 people; you can (still!) enjoy an outdoor kitchen and, of course, a helm station. As expected, the double-stepped hull and powerful engines promise excellent performance - close to 45 knots at top speed and 35 knots at cruising speed. At anchor, the emphasis is on modular living. The cockpit becomes impressively large thanks to fold-down bulwarks and a central sugarscoop, while the outdoor saloon can be transformed at will into an XXL sofa facing a screen that retracts into the transverse galley unit. Four bucket seats face the ultra-connected helm station, with full integration of Android and iOS systems. The builder has also fitted a cozy double cabin along with a fully equipped head. ► Full boat test coming soon in an upcoming issue of Multihulls World. ► Technical Specifications: Builder: Aquila Boats Length: 46’6” (14.17 m) Beam: 15’ (4.57 m) Beam with bulwarks open: 19’4” (5.88 m) Draft: 2’ (0.6 m) Air draft: 9’11” (3.02 m) Displacement: 21,970 lbs (9.96 t) Powertrain: 2 x 600 HP V12 Mercury Verado Max speed: 40 to 45 knots Fuel: 400 US gal (1,514 l) Water: 50 US gal (189 l) CE Certification: B10/C20/D29 ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! ► The Bordeaux-based shipyard took advantage of its annual “Lagoon Exclusive Days” event to unveil a world preview of its new flagship motor yacht, set to replace the Seventy 8. ► While the newcomer borrows a few elements such as the forward and central sections of the hulls, that’s pretty much it: the hulls have a much higher freeboard, the deck is completely new, as is the interior. The yard’s aim is to take the high-end approach even further with more volume, even better ease of moving around on board, special attention paid to the crew quarters, and above all, the possibility of maximum customization for each unit. Like the Lagoon Eighty 2, this boat’s sailing version twin that we’re testing in our next issue, the Lagoon Eighty 3 remains a production multiyacht, but the yard is clearly moving closer to the idea of pure customization. ► The new model obviously retains the fold-down platform in the owner’s suite on the starboard side, a veritable private terrace just over the water. On board, we were surprised by the unprecedented width of the side-decks that are very secure thanks to raised bulwarks and stainless-steel handrails. Hull #1 reveals a tasteful superyacht touch with its metallic turquoise coachroof and black hardtop. Inside this 4-cabin + 2-crew version, there are also dark marble tops and glass panels - showing the codes of luxury multipowers. ► Technical Specifications: Builder: Lagoon Architect: VPLP Length overall: 80’1” (24.4 m) Hull length: 78’5” (23.91 m) Maximum beam: 36’1” (11 m) Draft: 4’2” (1.27 m) Displacement: 68.5 t Motors: 2 x 580 HP Fuel: 2,245 US gal (8,500 l) Water: 420 US gal Cabins: 4 to 6 Berths: 8 to 16 CE Category: A14/B18/C24/D40 Price: Approx. € 8,500,000 ex-tax ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! ► Simpson Bay, Saint Martin, Thursday, January 29th: as the United States shivered and even Miami was threatened by frost, temperatures were nearing 86°F (30°C) in the heart of the Caribbean, and the sun was ever-present – barely obscured by a few cumulus clouds. Dream conditions for all the participants in the 8th edition of the CMC.
