BACK ON DREAM! But Where's Jenny? | D-Log 313 I'm finally back aboard Dream in Crete, Greece, after several weeks away in the UK. But this time, I'm here on my own. So where's Jenny, and why hasn't she come back with me? Our original plan was to return to Greece together for a couple of weeks to enjoy some sunshine and get Dream ready for the winter. Unfortunately, family circumstances have changed, and we've had to make some difficult decisions. In this week's D-Log, I'll explain what's happening, why I'm back aboard Dream alone, and what the next few weeks have in store. Thankfully, Dream has behaved herself while we've been away, but there's still plenty to do before I can leave her safely tucked up in the marina for the winter. From sorting out the onboard CCTV security system and taking down the genoa to preparing the cockpit, fitting the winter tent and organising a long-awaited repair, my job list is growing by the day! And it's not just the boat that needs attention. My scooter also needs its MOT and preparing for the winter months. On the plus side, it's wonderful to be back in Crete, with beautiful blue skies and temperatures still approaching 30°C in October! Following on from last week’s D-Log, where I asked “Are We Still Liveaboards?”, there’s another fairly obvious question that needs answering… So… what happens to the boat now? Dream is still sitting in Crete while our lives have temporarily shifted back to the UK. With everything that’s happened with Jenny’s family, and now my own mum being very poorly and back in hospital, our plans have had to become much more flexible. As things stand, we’re due to fly back to Crete on 9th October for 10 days. The plan is to get Dream properly prepared for winter and make a few important changes so that I can keep a closer eye on her while we’re back in the UK. That includes improving the CCTV and security, setting up remote access to the battery charger and getting the onboard router configured for remote monitoring. Meanwhile, life in the UK is beginning to get busy. My handyman business is starting to take off again with some substantial jobs alongside the smaller handyman work. I’m also continuing with estate agent viewings on my quieter days and have now been approved to work as a professional property photographer. So are we slowly leaving the sailing lifestyle behind? Absolutely not. Dream isn't going anywhere, and neither is our love of sailing. Life has simply changed direction for a while. As I say in the video: the wind has changed, so we're adjusting the sails. Are we still liveaboards if we're not actually living on our boat? A few months ago, life was very different. Jenny and I were living aboard our sailing yacht in Greece, travelling between the Greek islands and calling the boat our home. Now we're back in the UK, living in our caravan, and I've even started working again. But we haven't given up the boat, we haven't given up sailing, and we'll soon be heading back to Crete to spend some time aboard and get her ready for the winter. So where does that leave us? In D-Log 311, I explore what being a "liveaboard" actually means. Do you have to live aboard 365 days a year? Can you spend several months away from your boat and still consider yourself a liveaboard? Or is it less about where you're sleeping tonight and more about the lifestyle you've chosen? I also talk about how quickly we've slipped back into everyday life in the UK, living in the caravan, doing some work again, and how our idea of what constitutes "home" has changed after years of travelling and living aboard. Perhaps we're still liveaboards. Perhaps we're now part-time liveaboards. Or maybe we're just caravan dwellers who happen to own a yacht in Greece! I'd love to hear what you think. In D-Log 310, I tackle two problems with our caravan: a Dometic RM1270 fridge that had stopped working and an external fresh-water pump that appears to have been damaged after running dry. The Dometic caravan fridge had developed a couple of faults. When switched to 230V electric, it would trip the shore-power supply at the house, and when I tried running it on LPG gas, it wouldn't light. After ringing around caravan repair companies, the cheapest quote I received was around £240. So before booking it in, I did some research and decided to carry out some fault finding myself. In the video I explain how I diagnosed the electrical problem, including resistance checks with a multimeter, before removing the Dometic RM1270 fridge from the caravan and replacing the 230V heating element. While the fridge was out, I also cleaned the gas burner and burner area, which sorted the gas problem. The result? The fridge is now working again on both 230V electric and gas. ⚡ IMPORTANT: Caravan mains electricity and LPG gas can be dangerous. This video shows what I did to my own caravan and isn't a substitute for professional advice. If you're not competent and confident working with 230V electrical systems or LPG appliances, use a suitably qualified technician. Always isolate electrical supplies before carrying out resistance tests. There was also another caravan problem to sort out – no fresh water. The external water pump appears to have been allowed to run dry and damaged internally. As a temporary fix, I removed the working water pump from our camper van/motorhome and fitted it to the caravan, getting the water system working again. So that's two caravan repairs in one day – a Dometic fridge repair and a caravan fresh-water pump replacement. If you're having problems with a Dometic RM1270 caravan fridge, your caravan fridge is tripping the electric, it works on neither electric nor gas, or your caravan water pump has stopped working, hopefully my experience gives you some useful pointers for diagnosing the problem. Life doesn’t always follow the plans you make. Following the sad passing of Jen’s dad, we’ve returned to the UK to be with family and, most importantly, to help and support Jen’s mum. That means our plans have changed and, for the next few months at least, life is going to look rather different. But this definitely isn’t the end of our sailing life. The boat is still in Greece, we’ll still be returning to her, and sailing will continue to be a big part of our lives and this channel. For now, though, we’re going to be spending considerably more time in the UK. Fortunately, we have another couple of ways of living that might feel surprisingly familiar to anyone who has followed our life aboard — our caravan and motorhome. So in this D-Log I talk about what happens next, how our videos are going to change, and why you might start seeing a little more caravan life, motorhome travel and UK adventures alongside the sailing. In many ways, boat life, caravan life and motorhome life have a lot in common: living in a relatively small space, managing water and power, making the most of what you've got and having the freedom to explore. Perhaps this isn't really a change of direction at all. Can a simple rubber snubber really make a difference when anchoring a yacht? In J-Log 190, Jenny looks at the benefits of adding a rubber mooring compensator to our anchor snubber and why such a small piece of equipment can make life at anchor noticeably more comfortable. When a yacht is anchored in stronger winds or a choppy sea, the movement of the boat can create sudden shock loads through the anchor snubber and chain. Adding a rubber snubber provides extra elasticity, helping absorb some of those loads before they are transferred to the boat and anchoring system. Jenny explains why we use one aboard our yacht and how it can help reduce snatching, noise and sudden loads on the anchor gear. This week’s D-Log might be one of the most important (and overlooked) topics we’ve covered in a while… Jubilee clips. Not the most exciting bit of kit onboard… but absolutely critical. 🔧 Why This Matters If you think about it, jubilee clips are everywhere on a boat: Engine cooling systems Fuel lines Freshwater systems Bilge pumps Exhaust hoses Anywhere you’ve got a hose… you’ve probably got a clip holding it in place. And if that clip fails—especially below the waterline—you’re not just dealing with a leak… 👉 You could be dealing with a sinking boat. ⚠️ What We Cover in This Video In this D-Log, I break down everything you need to know, including: Why jubilee clips fail (corrosion, vibration, poor quality, overtightening) The difference between cut-out and grooved thread clips Why cheaper clips can actually damage your hoses The key differences between 304 and 316 stainless steel Why 316 (especially 316L) is the only real choice for marine use Why anything below the waterline should ALWAYS be double clipped 🛠️ Simple Checks That Could Save Your Boat This is one of those jobs that takes minutes… but could prevent a disaster. ✔ Check for corrosion or rust ✔ Look for pitting or sharp edges ✔ Make sure clips are tight (but not overtightened) ✔ Upgrade to 316 stainless grooved clips where needed ✔ Double clip all below-waterline hoses 💡 Final Thought It’s easy to ignore the small stuff onboard… But often, it’s the smallest components that cause the biggest problems. Instead of dismantling filters every time you want to inspect your fuel, this simple addition gives you a quick visual check that can help identify problems before they become expensive.
