We've been working on an off-grid foundation repair after removing a couple of trees from the roof of this treasured Alaskan gen. In this episode we crawled under this house expecting problems… just not this. One of the main load-bearing posts? Sitting on dirt. No footing. No anchor. Just years of “good enough” holding on through storms, tides, and time. So we got to work. Phase 3 of this off-grid foundation repair meant digging under the house, bracing everything in the dark, and figuring out how to turn something sketchy into something solid… without overbuilding or pretending we’ve got unlimited time and money. We also haul hundreds of pounds of concrete from Wooden Wheel Cove where the Alaskan Gypsy is tied to the state float, to the project site by skiff, on a sunny, beautiful day. This is real life in remote Alaska. You work with what you’ve got. You make it better than it was. And you respect the fact that somehow… it’s been standing this long. Congratulations are in order for Canadian boat builder Tideline Welded Aluminum Boats, who just won the Baird Maritime 2025 Work Boat World Award for Best Multi-Purpose Fishing Boat with their latest build for the 46 South Fishing Company. Collaborating with the Australian naval architecture firm Southerly Designs and Toura Boats, the Sunshine Coast based builder has set a new standard for building a rugged and versatile commercial fishing vessel. Powered by a single MAN D2868 V8 1000HP diesel, FV Kaitiaki was designed as a blend of a commercial and recreational vessel, built to be comfortable for extended trips for both family time and the owner's various fishing seasons. The MAN engine drives a Veem propller through a gearbox fitted with smart controls providing both high performance and low-speed control, allowing the vessel to work at speeds as low as 1.8 knots, ideal for the prawn and longline fishing seasons in the Pacific Northwest. With a focus on comfort, the boat features a full-beam captain's quarters beneath the raised pilot house and an additional v-berth with twin bunks for crew. With a 16' beam, the aft deck is an efficient work space and the port side head being aft on the deck doubles as a dry room for wet gear, keeping the cabin area clean for crew comfort. After exploring the outer islands of the Seychelles, we returned to Mahé with a growing list of things that needed attention onboard. From a fridge that wasn’t staying cold to Starlink dropping out and a few other boat jobs piling up, it was time to regroup and find some solutions. But living this life in remote places doesn’t always make things easy… so we made the call to send Dad on a whirlwind trip across the world — collecting a passport, sourcing spare parts, and catching up with family along the way. That meant the rest of us stayed behind to keep things running… with Bella stepping up and taking the helm for the week. While Dad raced between flights, we slowed things down a little — exploring more of Mahé, visiting a beautiful spice garden with friends, and continuing life aboard as a family. Eventually, with everyone reunited and a few key problems solved, we were ready to move forward once again. Alors après de nombreuses pannes et rachat de pièces d'occasion Raymarine pour notre pilote automatique, on jette l'éponge et nous passons sur projet Open source. C'est le Pypilot, version assemblée par Navitop. On va donc enlever le calculateur, l'écran et le compas fluxgate de Raymarine, on ne garde que le vérin et le capteur d'angle de barre. Et on met le calculateur pypilot et le contrôleur pypilot à la place. On va bien s'amuser 🙂 Voici la première partie de l'installation. on y voit en particulier l'intégration dans le réseau informatique de @VoilierMartineke et la communication avec Opencpn 👍 on y parle wifi, NMEA 0183, Routeur Nmea4wifi, barre franche, contrôle via web et contrôle via Opencpn et son plugin Pypilot.
