Living remotely aboard our sailboat in Alaska means finding creative ways to build, repair, and repurpose what the coast gives back. In this episode, we explore an old wilderness ship graveyard and salvage weathered hardwood from a forgotten shipwreck to use inside the Gypsy. What looks like driftwood and debris at first glance turns out to be beautiful old-growth lumber filled with history, character, and saltwater stories. From paddle boarding heavy timber back to the boat to imagining future cabinetry and interior projects aboard our steel schooner, this became one of those unexpected Alaska days that felt equal parts work, treasure hunt, and reflection. Everyone talks about catamaran comfort, stability, and space… but almost nobody talks about the hidden advantage monohulls have for beginner sailors. In this video, I break down the one thing that completely changed how I view the catamaran vs monohull debate, and why I’m personally planning to buy a monohull in 2027 instead of a catamaran. This isn’t about “real sailors” or tradition. It’s about how boats teach you, how beginners actually learn, and why feedback at sea might matter more than comfort when you’re starting out. If you’ve been debating catamaran vs monohull, especially as a beginner cruiser, this perspective might completely change how you think about the decision. ⚓ Topics Covered: • Catamaran vs monohull for beginners • Why monohulls feel different underway • Heel feedback and seamanship • Self-righting design explained simply • The psychology behind boat choice • Why comfort isn’t always the most important thing #Sailing #Monohull #Catamaran #Liveaboard #Sailboat #Cruising #BeginnerSailing #BoatLife
In this last episode of team interviews of the 2026 season, meet two teams that bring a lot of love-energy to the table - much more than is required when grinding to Alaska.

The RMYC Quest Dinghy Regatta delivered some of the most interesting racing of the season — and with so many father and child teams on the water, there was plenty more than just silverware at stake. Taking the win were father and son Brian and Danny Flahive, proving that the best crew you can have is family. Congratulations to all who took part! 🏆

A video about selling my sailboat after 4 years. More than a boat, it was a chapter of life.
In the previous episode, Mark sailed his Cape Dory 36, Swan, solo from Morocco down to Mindelo in Cape Verde. Now on the return leg of his Atlantic circuit he faces the big one - the 2,200-mile trade-wind passage across the Atlantic to Dominica Island in the West Indies. There is no diesel engine. Only a small 6kw electric outboard motor in a custom lazarette well used mainly to enter and depart port. This is the ULTIMATE day boat/fishing machine for the boater who's very clear on his or her mission. If you have had the bigger boats with multiple cabins but now your lifestyle leans more towards days aboard the boat instead of nights. Or if you just want a platform that's super flexible on the number of guests you can accommodate the the sea state you can still go out in while keeping your guests dry and protected then the Grady White Freedom 415 is that boat. While underway she absolutely behaves like a big yacht when crossing swells and parting waves. But from an operational perspective she's still a vessel that a solo operator could manage no worries. This I believe is the secret of these new Dual Console designs. You could be doing a Friday night Corporate Cruise with your work buddies, with your wife and kids having a picnic on Saturday and heading offshore at 5am on Sunday with 6 of your fishing buddies to catch Marlin. In each of these scenarios this Grady will keep everyone dry, comfortable and safe while also enjoying the ride in a wide variety of sea states that this hull will clearly eat up and leave in her wake. On Monday in Lorient, Charles Caudrelier and the members of the Gitana Team cast off at dawn, heading out to sea in search of the breeze that would allow this 32-metre, 19-tonne giant to take to the air and make its first flights as the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild. The latest addition to the Gitana fleet had received its first hydrofoil – the starboard one – last week. Since then, the whole team had been hard at work finalising its installation and testing this revolutionary appendage, with a total wingspan of over 10 metres, as quickly as possible. A few hours later, it was off the coast of Belle-Île that Gitana 18 took to the air. Day 13 & 14 of our offshore passage from the USA to Colombia… After days at sea, the weather forecast suddenly shifts for the worse. What was meant to be manageable conditions turns into a long-lasting storm stretching across the entire Caribbean Sea — leaving us with nowhere to run and no way around it. With 50 knot gusts, massive swell, waves breaking over the boat, and almost no chance to properly rest, the boys take turns steering through the chaos before collapsing into the cockpit completely soaked between watches. This is the raw reality of offshore sailing when the ocean decides otherwise. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ⛵ Support / GoFundMe (HeadSail replacement): After our headsail failed during this passage, a lot of you asked how you could help. We’ve set up a fundraiser to go directly toward replacing the sail and getting Escapade safely moving again. https://gofund.me/73555833f Thank you so much to everyone who has already supported us, shared kind messages, or donated — including through PayPal. What does it take to prep for extended passagemaking and the liveaboard lifestyle? A lot of hard work, that’s what! And plenty of time spent sourcing all the parts we either broke or need to upgrade. In this episode we focus on electrical system repairs and upgrades, installation of a new Gen3 Starlink system, and dinghy service. The idea, and one that has worked for many years, is to do every single last task on an extensive list before we even launch. This allows us to mostly relax and enjoy the season without nagging failures to deal with. I mentioned during the episode that viewers could get a discounted price on the fuel/water filter-separator, and you can use the link below to claim that. There is something seriously wrong with the weather. We just had a 3 day holiday weekend - yet it was hot, a light breeze blowing and not a cloud in the sky! So Jetti and I decided to take a gentle cruise in our 30ft Sagitta catamaran to Hope Cove, about 15 miles east of or mooring in Plymouth. We just drifted along, together with a whole variety of different boats. No drama or excitement, so this video just shows the deck layout and some of the interior of our boat. Hope Cove was crowded when we got there so, unusually, we had to anchor in 30ft of water - normally we try for under 10 ft. And very glad we were not on a monohull, they were all rolling rhythmically in the SW swell. Next day we sailed back to Plymouth, a bit more wind so touched 6+ knots at times. Apart from the lack of roll, the other big advantage of a multihull is that we have all round vision when sitting inside (we go "inside" not "down below" on catamarans) Sunday night was spent at one of our favourite anchorages, up the Lynher river, with obligatory BBQ. Then home again on Monday. If only all sailing was like that! As always, no audio on this short video. The Manly Ferries were choreographing a slow and weaving dance with a pod of whales that were rolling around in Manly Cove late this afternoon - with the whales seeming totally unfazed by the movement around them. No need to head offshore at the weekend to whale watch these days; get two for the price of one on your weekday travels to and from work!

No Electricity, No Problem: The Secret to Baking with Hot Stones 🥥🔥 In the remote villages of the Solomon Islands, "low and slow" isn't just a cooking style—it’s a way of life. In this episode, we step into the kitchen of Kerry and his wife to learn the labor-intensive art of making Traditional Cassava Pudding. This isn't your average recipe; it involves hand-grating fresh tapioca, extracting rich cream from coconuts, and a layering process inside flame-seared banana leaves. The real magic, however, lies in the oven. Forget gas or electricity; here, they use recycled 20L fuel drums and intensely heated stones to create a natural convection oven that rivals any modern appliance. We watch as the locals bake fresh bread and slow-cook our pudding for over 12 hours under a mound of rocks and leaves. While the fire does its work, we discover a surprising food: Mangrove Seeds. We learn the meticulous process required to make these bitter seeds edible—a true testament to the resourcefulness of the Solomon people. After spending a week anchored at beautiful Lanyard Cay in the Bahamas, I finally got a short weather window to sail north toward Green Turtle Cay in the Abacos - solo aboard Mirage. The highlight of this episode is definitely the Lanyard Cay cut. With a strong easterly wind and some breaking waves at the entrance, I had one very honest question in my mind: Am I doing something really f@(#!ng stupid? :) Solo sailing makes every decision feel bigger. There’s no crew to double-check the plan, no one else at the helm, and no one to blame if things go wrong. But Mirage handled it beautifully, pushed through the cut, and once outside we had a fantastic sail in 25–28 knots of wind across the stunning blue waters of the Bahamas. Later, I passed the famous - and sometimes very dangerous - Whale Cut, but this time it was unbelievably gentle. No waves, no drama, just smooth water. I ended the day anchored near Green Turtle Cay, where Mirage finally got a chance for a much-needed bottom cleaning. Beautiful sailing, strong wind, blue water, a little fear, and a lot of respect for the sea. The incredible students from King's College — and it just keeps getting better. From competitive beach games to warm water swims, and epic sailing adventures, this trip had it all. With plenty of time on the water, the students developed their sailing skills through hands-on learning, teamwork, tacking drills, sail handling, and building confidence onboard in all conditions. Watching everyone grow in skill and confidence across the voyage was incredible. Big thanks to the students and staff who brought the energy, enthusiasm, and unforgettable memories to every moment of the journey. ⚓ Teamwork 🌊 Adventure ⛵ Sailing & tacking skills 💙 Memories for life #KingsCollege #SchoolTrip #YouthDevelopment #SailingAdventure #NZSailingTrust #BeachGames #WinterSwim #OutdoorEducation #Teamwork #StudentLife #BonfireNights #AucklandHarbour #LearnByDoing #SailingLife
