Today was a simple day. I cooked, I sailed, and I watched dolphins. I decided to try making pain au chocolat in my Omnia oven, and I may have just discovered a game changer for the Golden Globe Race. They definitely don’t look bakery-perfect, and there’s room for improvement, but they were absolutely delicious. Honestly, being able to bake fresh pastries in the middle of the ocean feels a little ridiculous. And then came the dolphins. So many dolphins. Jumping, surfing the bow wave, swimming alongside the boat as if they had somewhere important to be. One of those moments that instantly puts a smile on your face and makes you stop whatever you’re doing. It wasn’t an exciting day. It wasn’t a challenging day. It was just a really good day. After years of waiting, delays, setbacks, and one very long journey to get here, my new yacht is finally mine! I signed the paperwork the day before, and now it is time to take her out for our first real sail and shakedown cruise. I was definitely a little nervous pulling out of the slip and leaving the marina, but once we raised the sails, the nerves faded and the dream finally started to feel real. We sailed over to Koh Larn, popped a bottle of champagne, poured a little out for Neptune, and dropped anchor in a busy bay full of tour boats and jet skis. By evening, things calmed down, so we lowered the new Highfield dinghy, took the dogs ashore for a beach walk, Olivia went for a swim, and we had dinner on the beach… until a rainstorm forced us to take shelter. When Sailing Barking Cat left Australia aboard their cruising catamaran La Vita, the plan was simple: sail offshore toward Fiji, cross the Pacific with their crew and dogs, and begin the next chapter of the cruising dream. But a dream passage can turn into a Mayday shockingly fast. After delaying for weather, sea-trialing the boat, preparing grab bags, checking systems, provisioning carefully, and doing so much right, Dusty and Helena still found themselves hundreds of miles offshore with both engines down, water coming aboard, rough weather building, and their catamaran eventually dismasted in the Pacific. We are very impressed by this diverse and interesting island. The Piton de la Fournaise volcano is active, and we're looking at the solidified lava on the blocked road. We're visiting the three cirques of Salazie, Mafate, and Cilaos, driving along the Road of 500 Curves, and stopping in Saint-Gilles, Saint-Pierre, and Hell-Bourg. At the Bubble Hotel, we can see the stars from our beds at night. The island is definitely worth seeing, and you shouldn't miss it. Enjoy the video! We took the Smart Cat S280 out on the water with the owner for a full performance test, putting both the engines and the sails through their paces. Under power, the S280 ran beautifully with twin Yamaha 50HP High Thrust outboards, smooth, responsive, and plenty of confidence-inspiring thrust for maneuvering and cruising. A large population of juvenile green sea turtles is thriving at Quicksilver’s Agincourt Reef (AG3) platform, with ongoing research revealing the site is an important habitat for young turtles. For a little chill time, check out the video of some of the cool resident turtles to be found at Quicksilver's Great Barrier Reef activity platform. Marine biologist Heather Platt, Quicksilver’s Reef Biosearch Manager, said they have been conducting research into the resident turtle population for over 12 months using photo identification techniques. 38 individual immature green turtles have now been identified with over 390 sightings recorded through a combination of targeted surveys and citizen science contributions. The findings highlight the ecological importance of the AG3 area for feeding, residence and transit of juvenile turtles. “All of our documented turtles are immature, which tells us Agincourt Reef provides an ideal environment for their juvenile years,” said Ms Platt.“ As the study continues, we’re hoping to better understand how long these turtles remain here before moving on to other parts of the reef.” Among the growing catalogue of turtles, Jasper has emerged as the most frequently sighted individual, followed by Little Foot. Others, like T-Bone, appear to be more transient - disappearing from the survey area for months at a time before returning to the platform. Long-term monitoring has also provided insights into a young turtle’s healing journey. “The ‘OG’ of our turtle survey, Charli, (first identified in 2023) appears to be doing very well after being sighted with a significant carapace injury in July 2024. We’ve been able to document his/her healing journey throughout the months that followed. Sighted in recent weeks, you'd almost never know the injury had occurred.” Guests spending the day with Quicksilver are encouraged to submit their turtle photos to assist the Reef Biosearch team in monitoring the population. Each turtle is identified by their unique pattern of facial scales, which remain consistent throughout their lifetime. During in-water snorkel surveys, both images and video are captured to accurately distinguish individuals, assigning each turtle an alphanumeric ID alongside any nicknames. The data collected in the turtle survey is contributing to broader conservation efforts, with records shared with the Sea Turtle Observatory to support population tracking along the Queensland coast. This collaboration increases the likelihood of identifying these turtles again at future feeding or breeding sites across the Great Barrier Reef. The research forms part of Quicksilver’s ongoing site stewardship which focuses on monitoring reef health and protecting the rich marine biodiversity of this globally significant ecosystem.
