Hey! We’re Ruth and Andrew 👋🏼 Earlier this year, after years of dreaming, we left our family, friends and lives in Edinburgh, Scotland, behind as we set off to chase our shared dream of sailing the world. In April, we bought our 11m catamaran, Rúna, which we now call home as we live, work, sail and adventure full-time. Join us as we explore the Mediterranean and get to grips with life at sea 🏝️ In this week’s episode, we’re trying to give you a real glimpse into what life looks like living on a catamaran in the Med! From island anchorages and secret underwater adventures, to running from storms and tackling boat maintenance, it’s all part of the reality of sailing full-time in the Mediterranean ⛵️✨ We leave mainland France behind and head for island life, exploring the stunning Îles d'Hyères, swimming in crystal clear waters, hiking rugged landscapes, and even anchoring in a nudist resort by accident (yes… that was unexpected 😅). We try out some new filming gear to take you along as we sail Rúna in strong winds! And we discover Europe’s very first marine national park at Port-Cros, where we search for a hidden underwater trail. And when the thunderstorm rolls in, Ruth gets very wet as she sails us back to the mainland to ride it out in a protected bay. This is a typical week living on a sailing boat in the Mediterranean! In this week’s episode, we’re sailing along the stunning French Riviera, and it might just be home to some of the most beautiful anchorages and coastlines we’ve seen since starting our sailing adventure on Rúna! 😍 Joined by our friends Beth & Guy, we hop from anchorage to anchorage, exploring rugged cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and picture-perfect bays, giving them the ultimate taste of life aboard our liveaboard catamaran. From water toys to sailing in strong winds, lazy swims to SUP surfing, it was the perfect couple of days. But the highlight came as we finally arrived at what felt like the most perfect island paradise in the Mediterranean! Wide-open anchorages, turquoise waters and incredible landscapes, this really felt like nature at its best and true sailing heaven. Hey! After our “5 Annoying Things” video last week, some people in the comments thought we didn’t do any research… that we don’t know how to spec a boat correctly… or that we simply bought the wrong one. The truth? Unless money is no object, there’s no such thing as a truly perfect boat – buying a yacht is all about compromise, especially in the entry-level cruising category. In this video, we’re lifting the lid on our decision-making process, looking at the top cats under 40 feet and how we concluded that the Excess 11 was the best liveaboard catamaran for us. We’ll talk about: ⛵ The yachts we considered and the ones we quickly ruled out ⚖ The compromises we knew we’d have to make 🏆 The top 5 reasons we chose the Excess 11 😍 Our dream boat if money were no object So… did we make the right decision? Let’s find out. #SailingLife #CatamaranLiving #problem #sailingyacht #LifeOnBoard #LiveaboardAdventure #Excess11 #SailingCouple #MediterraneanSailing #SailingMallorca #BoatLife #LiveaboardCatamaran #sailing #sailingdisaster Find daily content on our socials: 📸 Instagram: http://instagram.com/lifestylegibbon 📸 Instagram: https://instagram.com/therunalife 🎥 TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@therunalife 🎬 Huge thanks to @SAILTAHITI for sharing footage for our intro!

After 4 months of living full-time on our Excess 11 catamaran, we’ve discovered a few problems that our yacht broker didn't tell us when we bought our boat! In this video, we’re sharing the 5 most annoying things about our catamaran (and yes, we know we're probably top of the list too 😂) — those little frustrations and design quirks that only become obvious once you’re actually living aboard. From everyday inconveniences to features that just don’t work the way you’d hope, we’re breaking down the stuff the sales broker definitely didn’t mention. If you’re thinking about buying a catamaran (whether it’s an Excess 11 or any other sailing yacht), we hope this helps highlight some of the smaller things worth looking out for! Watch to see what made the list! 00:00 - 0:37 Introduction 0:37 - 2:02 Saloon bed 2:02 - 3:24 Dual helm stations 3:24 - 4:27 Geona sheets 4:27 - 5:25 Winch 5:25 - 6:10 Starboard helm station 6:10 - 7:00 The most annoying thing! #SailingLife #CatamaranLiving #problem #sailingyacht #LifeOnBoard #LiveaboardAdventure #Excess11 #SailingCouple #MediterraneanSailing #SailingMallorca #BoatLife #LiveaboardCatamaran #sailing #sailingdisaster Find daily content on our socials: 📸 Instagram: http://instagram.com/lifestylegibbon 📸 Instagram: https://instagram.com/therunalife 🎥 TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@therunalife 🎬 Huge thanks to @SAILTAHITI for sharing footage for our intro!

From learning to fish on an 18-hour passage to backflips in remote anchorages, exploring centuries-old island forts, and facing 50-knot winds at anchor, this episode captures a real week on our liveaboard catamaran pretty well! If you have any suggestions to help improve our fishing skills, we’d love to hear them in the comments! After surviving a stormy arrival into France in our last episode, we continue our journey east along the Mediterranean coast, joined by Ruth’s brother Jack. With calm seas and steady wind, we set off on an 18-hour passage towards Marseille, hoping to dodge yet another weather system. With calm seas and steady wind, we got our fishing rods out and fished off the back of Runa for the first time, with high hopes of catching our dinner... We eventually anchored just off Marseille in the stunning Frioul Islands, one of the most beautiful spots we’ve stayed yet. But paradise didn’t last long… the weather caught up with us, and we had to prepare Rúna for nearly 50 knots of wind that was sweeping across the whole of the French coastline. Hey! In April, we bought our 11m catamaran, Rúna, which we now call home as we live, work, sail and adventure full-time. Join us as we explore the Mediterranean and get to grips with life at sea 🏝️ In this episode, after weeks of sailing through the stunning Balearic Islands, we leave Menorca behind and begin our 140-nautical-mile passage to mainland France. Our destination? Port-Cannet-en-Roussillon for critical warranty work on our catamaran. What we didn’t expect… was one of the slowest, most challenging passages we’ve had to date and one of the scariest nights we've ever had at sea 😅 With less than 7 knots of wind (despite a 15+ knots forecast), our average boat speed dropped to a painful 3.5 knots. We were falling drastically behind schedule, but just as we began to make up some ground, the weather turned. Fast. What began as a slow and quiet sail turned into a full-on Mediterranean thunderstorm - our first onboard Rúna. No moon, no stars, just pitch-black skies, towering squalls, strong winds, and lightning all around us. And we were still miles from land. In this video, we take you hour-by-hour through our journey: from flying the code zero and peaceful night sailing, to battling heavy seas and navigating through the thunderstorm, desperately trying to reach shelter. Join us aboard Rúna as we learn the hard way that weather can turn on you very quickly, and living on a yacht isn't always sunshine and calm seas. Join us aboard our 38ft liveaboard catamaran Rúna as we sail from the southern coast of Mallorca to the rugged shores of Menorca — with a week full of epic sailing, coastal exploring, and a few unexpected challenges! We kick off our 4-day passage around Mallorca with strong headwinds and a not-so-serious yacht race before discovering Cala d’Or, the perfect anchorage for sunset swims and diving competitions (spoiler: Ruth needs to work on her form!). From there, we continue towards Pollença, chasing the wind while balancing life on board and remote work. But this video isn’t just about sailing — it’s about discovering the beautiful towns of the Balearics! We cycle the famous mountain roads of Pollenca, explore the historic walled town of Alcudia, discover charming Port de Sóller, and finally sail to Menorca, where we find the most beautiful marina we’ve ever seen in Ciutadella. Of course, boat life isn’t complete without a bit of chaos. A strong weather system rolls in and a monohull breaks its windlass in 30 knots. We finish our journey in Port Addaia, one of Menorca’s most picturesque hidden gems — and the perfect place to wrap up a wild week. Sailing Ibiza & Formentera on our live-aboard Catamaran, Rúna. If you're enjoying watching this video, please like and subscribe to our channel. It means the world to us and helps us continue to improve the content we make! 💙⛵️ What started as an exciting passage from Denia to Ibiza, quickly turned into every sailor’s worst nightmare… In this episode, we set sail from mainland Spain to explore Ibiza and Formentera — two islands that have been at the top of our bucket list since buying our catamaran. With friends joining us and perfect weather on the horizon, we were ready for an unforgettable weekend. From stunning anchorages and crystal-clear water to an iconic stop at Blue Marlin Ibiza, the trip started perfectly. But things quickly took a dramatic turn in Formentera when a mooring buoy failed — and a neighbouring yacht began drifting towards the rocks. With no one aboard and the boat rapidly approaching the coastline, we jumped into our dinghy to attempt a rescue. It was tense, chaotic, and a powerful reminder of just how fast things can go wrong when you’re living at sea. We issued a PAN PAN to the coast guard and neighbouring boats for help and watched on as emergency crews tried to prevent the yacht from being wrecked. As regular mooring buoy users, this experience has changed the way we think about tying up and leaving our yacht on a buoy. If you're planning to cruise in Formentera, the Balearics, or anywhere in the Med, this is a must-watch. 🏝️ Island Escapes, Floating Cocktails & Spanish Festivals - Sailing Spain on Our Liveaboard Catamaran This week aboard Rúna has been all about exploring with friends and discovering hidden gems along the Spanish coast, away from the big, built-up cities. With two friends joining us onboard, we left the busy, built-up shores of La Manga and sailed in search of beautiful anchorages and a little more of the authentic Spain. If you have any recommendations for beautiful anchorages in the Med, we'd love to hear about them in the comments! Our first stop in this week's video was a tiny island with a population of just 50 people! Surrounded by crystal-clear waters, this little paradise was the perfect spot for swimming, exploring and relaxing, exactly what we were looking for! From there, we made a return to the populated Spanish coastline as we headed for Alicante, where we were swept up in a vibrant local festival before heading to the charming coastal town of Moraira. We wrapped up this incredible stretch of sailing in Dénia, where we were forced to dock up as our sails had to come off the boat. With a friend joining us on our journey along the Spanish coast, we faced one of our most unusual navigations yet — entering the Mar Menor in La Manga. We also coordinated our first-ever rescue at sea, saving a stranded sailor who had lost control of his boat and couldn't get back to shore! And of course, what’s a week on a brand-new yacht without more surprise boat issues? From ongoing teething problems to a mysterious creature in our toilet?! This week, our Mediterranean sailing adventure continues as we explore the stunning Spanish coastline! We kick things off with a trip inland to the magical city of Granada — one of our favourite cities EVER! Then it’s back to boat life, as we sail along the coast and discover some of the most epic anchorages we’ve seen yet! Cala de San Pedro is definitely up there as one of our favourite places — a secluded bay home to an off-grid community living far away from any cities (but they have an epic bar). But it’s not all dreamy sailing… This week also brought some warranty problems on our brand-new catamaran, including a torn sail and large amounts of water in our engine bays. Our First Passage Ends in Disaster – France to Gibraltar Gone Wrong ⛵ After months of anticipation, our dream was finally becoming reality: we set sail from the west coast of France on a 10-day passage to Gibraltar, ready to begin our new life sailing the Med on our liveaboard catamaran. Our Skipper and First Mate joined us, the boat was prepped, and we were ready to take on the Bay of Biscay and Orca Alley — but what followed was far from what we expected. From brutal weather delays to painfully slow progress, seasickness, and unexpected setbacks, this journey pushed us harder than anything we’ve faced so far. And just as we thought we were finding our rhythm… disaster struck. This episode follows us as we cross the Bay of Biscay and looks at the reality of sailing long passages — the highs, the lows, and the moments that test how much you really want the dream. We’d love for you to support us on our journey, so please like and subscribe to the channel, it really does mean the world to us 💙 Instgram: www.instagram.com/lifestylegibbon Instgram: www.instagram.com/therunalife TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@therunalife Episode 3, Chapter One. We were quoted over €20,000 to install solar onto our new yacht! 😱 We thought this was a crazy price, so we did it ourselves (with a little bit of help)! After months of planning, researching, and wrestling with logistics, we’ve finally done it — our solar power system is officially installed on the boat! 🌞⚓ This has been one of the biggest challenges we've faced in transitioning to life aboard and ensuring we can live sustainably and independently off-grid. In this video, we take you through the steps of the installation and show how it all came together. Whether you're planning your own solar installation or just curious about how it works on a boat, we hope our experience helps and inspires you. We love sharing our journey with you, so if you'd like to keep up to date with what comes next when we take Runa across the Bay of Biscay and through Orca Alley, please like and subscribe... It's free and helps us out! We also love to chat in the comments, so if you have any advice about crossing Biscay or completing long passages, let us know! 🚐 Goodbye Scotland, hello yacht life! We've offically moved aboard our brand new catamaran ⛵ After years of dreaming and months of planning, it’s finally happening! In this video, we pack up our entire life in Edinburgh, load up the van, and make the big road trip south to France to move aboard our brand new catamaran! 😍 We had just one week to get ourselves organised before our official handover, so it was a whirlwind of shopping sprees for boat essentials (think IKEA meets chandlery chaos) and stocking up on safety gear and supplies to make the boat feel like home. Our handover day with Sea Ventures included a full walk-through of every system on our yacht, aswell as the perfect day for Runa's first sail ⛵️ This is a huge milestone in our sailing journey, and the beginning of our new life at sea. From land life to boat life in just a few days—we’re bringing you along for every moment. Don’t forget to like and subscribe to follow our adventure as we install our own custom solar arch and gear up to sail 1000nm across the Bay of Biscay! 😅 Episode one, chapter one. 00:00 - 1:33 Moving to France 1:33 - 3:16 The boat and our plan 3:18 - 4:36 Boat shopping 4:38 - 5:25 - Dealer handover 5:26 - 6:41 - Moving aboard and round up #boatlife #liveaboard #catamarans #sailinglife #movingday #offgridlife #tinyhome #travelvlog #sailingcouple

When we set out to buy our dream catamaran, we knew we wanted to be completely self-sufficient with no reliance on marinas, no noisy generators, just clean, renewable energy from the sun. But when we got professional quotes to install a solar and battery setup, we were shocked—over €20,000 just to install solar panels and batteries! 😱 And at that price, we felt like we were getting ripped off! So, instead of giving up, we decided to take matters into our own hands. In this video, we dive into one of the biggest and most expensive challenges we’ve faced on our journey to living aboard, but we’re determined to make it happen! 💪 If you’re planning to install solar on your boat (or just want to follow our crazy journey), make sure to like, subscribe, and drop us a comment below! After years of dreaming, we finally did it — we bought our very own boat! Six months ago, we decided on the yacht, chose our spec and placed the order, and now, the big moment is here: we're seeing our yacht for the very first time as the team at Excess Catamrans invite us for an exclusive tour of their factory in France! What started as an exciting Excess factory tour quickly turned into unexpected chaos when we headed to the marina where our yacht will be launched in the coming weeks. Let's just say… things didn’t go exactly as planned! 😅 We saw Violette Dorange finish the Vendee Globe 2025! And our adventure is just beginning! Next month, we embark on our first major passage — 10 days across the Bay of Biscay and through Orca Alley - as we prepare to live aboard and sail across the Mediterranean this season 🌊⛵ 🔔 Subscribe & follow our journey! #Sailing #YachtLife #BoatTour #factorytour Instgram: www.instagram.com/lifestylegibbon TikTok: Lifestylegibbon Thanks to @EXCESSCatamarans for hosting us in the factory and sharing promo footage ®Excess Library – Videomaker Arnaud Scius
