In this week’s episode, we set off on an 18-hour overnight crossing back to the mainland that could have ended in disaster. From abandoning our first attempt to sailing through total darkness, our final passage from Corsica to Italy was pretty eventful. Our biggest regrets (and the regrets we thought we’d have!) since buying our catamaran! We’ve been living full-time aboard our Excess 11 catamaran for just over 6 months now, and while it’s been the most incredible adventure of our lives… we’ve definitely made some mistakes along the way! Everyone told us: “Don’t buy a catamaran, they can’t sail upwind.” Well, in today’s video, we’re putting that theory to the test as we line up Rúna, our Excess 11 catamaran, against a monohull to see who’s really faster going upwind - and we see how close we can take Rúna into the wind. Our Corsican adventure also continues as we sail from the lively citadel of Bonifacio down to the breathtaking Lavezzi Islands. Just as the sun goes down, water starts flooding into the boat whilst we’re mid-passage, 50 miles offshore… In this week’s episode, we leave mainland France behind and set off on a 20-hour overnight passage to Corsica — but things don’t go smoothly. After our “5 Annoying Things” video last week, some people in the comments thought we didn’t do any research… that we don’t know how to spec a boat correctly… or that we simply bought the wrong one. From learning to fish on an 18-hour passage to backflips in remote anchorages, exploring centuries-old island forts, and facing 50-knot winds at anchor, this episode captures a real week on our liveaboard catamaran pretty well! Our destination? Port-Cannet-en-Roussillon for critical warranty work on our catamaran. What we didn’t expect… was one of the slowest, most challenging passages we’ve had to date and one of the scariest nights we've ever had at sea 😅 With less than 7 knots of wind (despite a 15+ knots forecast), our average boat speed dropped to a painful 3.5 knots. We were falling drastically behind schedule, but just as we began to make up some ground, the weather turned. Fast. What began as a slow and quiet sail turned into a full-on Mediterranean thunderstorm - our first onboard Rúna. No moon, no stars, just pitch-black skies, towering squalls, strong winds, and lightning all around us. And we were still miles from land.
