Lost track of time, lost track of Lisa, and found far more than expected. Big Farmers Cay pulled us in, then pulled us right back into boat work reality. In this episode of Sailing Dark Angel, I paddle off to explore the shoreline of Big Farmers Cay and get completely distracted by caves, beaches, gorgeous limestone and crystal clear water. While Captain Dave searches the mangroves wondering where I went, I eventually find my way back to turtles, rays, and beautiful sharks. Then it’s back to reality as I tackle emergency repairs on our badly torn trampoline. ⚠️ The lightning strike changed everything on Dark Angel, and we’re still rebuilding piece by piece. Epic Navigator Control Line Maneuver Explained – A Core Skill Every Advanced Skipper Must Master Welcome to Epic Navigator In this video, we break down one of the most critical boat-handling skills for advanced skippers: the correct use of the Control Line. The control line is the line we usually send ashore first, most commonly from the stern and on the windward side, allowing us to balance the yacht against the wind and fully control its movement. This technique enables precise positioning of the boat , giving us maximum control even in challenging conditions. What you’ll learn in this video: -How and when to deploy the control line -Proper preparation of the line before throwing it ashore -The **lasso technique** for accurate and safe line handling -How to approach a quay using the control line -How to pivot and rotate the yacht around a fixed point (cleat/bit ashore) - Understanding and using the **pivot point** to control the boat’s movement This maneuver is a foundational skill for skippers who want to operate at a high technical level, whether on monohulls or catamarans. Boat building is generally old hat and all been done before. As boat builder I’m bored and I’m choosing fresh ideas to spice up my own build. With a goal to take electric sailing as far as I can I’m searching every inch of our industry for ideas that will help me on this journey. This week I’m exploring alternatives to traditional sails, anchoring solutions all the way from ropes, to anchors and a 48v windlass from leading manufacturer Lewmar. Ditching the chart plotter in search of a more future friendly solution? Yes, it can be done… is it a good idea? After surviving a devastating shipwreck and robbery, our new crew was hoping for a safe passage north from the Amazon Delta to French Guiana. However, without warning, a fast moving boat appeared from nowhere and began following us. What started as concern quickly turned to fear as the pursuit continued for over 40 minutes. In this episode, we share an unsettling moment in our sailing life, navigating a suspect pirate encounter in one of the least patrolled stretches of ocean in South America. From careful route planning to dodging humpback whales in Hervey Bay, this passage demanded patience, preparation, and constant awareness. In this video, we share how we chose our route south from Bundaberg, why depth matters so much through the Straits, and how tools like Queensland’s Beacon to Beacon Guide helped us navigate safely. It’s a fascinating stretch of water — beautiful, challenging, and unlike anywhere else we’ve sailed. After wrapping up this final passage aboard Te Tāiko, we return to New Zealand for a while — still travelling, still exploring, and still sharing our life by land and sea. From there, Meegan was promoted to Port Captain for the University of Washington where she managed the global research vessel Thomas G Thompson and the R/V Rachel Carson. In that position, Meegan traveled to 13 countries and collected some harrowing experiences. As wide multi-hull sailors, we don't have many boatyards to choose from when time to haul out. When we contacted the Wik in Sorong, Raja Ampat, we decided to give it a go. We thought it would be a quick haul-out but it turned out quite differently as you will discover. Filmed in 2024. Look on www.TropicalSailingLife.com for more about our boat and voyage.

The SS Leviathan, formerly the German SS Vaterland, was launched on April 3rd, 1913 by the Hamburg America Line and was requisitioned by the United States during World War 1. She was the largest American ocean liner yet and promised to help establish the newly founded United States Lines. Unfortunately, despite her popularity, she never lived up to her potential.

Day 38, Solo NonStop Circumnavigation: Today was quiet, cinematic, and lazy. It’s August 31st; 2025. We’re mid Atlantic, finally south of the ITCZ, heading towards the equator. 2,055 miles from the start (Grenada). 0 engine hours have been used since setting sail. WILL ANSWER ALL COMMENTS WHEN I HAVE SERVICE! ❤️ My name is Captain Kimmer. After tri-outs: sailing across the Atlantic without any navigation equipment, just my eyes and the stars, we’re on mission 1 of 3. A Solo NonStop Circumnavigation with a twist! I hope you enjoy the show. 🐶 ♋️ The Bravest Dog in the World Is About to Change It. Help Us Get There. I’m Captain Kimmer, Kimmer O’Reilly — sailor, survivor, and founder of a mission that shouldn’t be possible. Two-time blood cancer nearly took my life. When I survived, I expected joy. What came instead was an identity crisis. I didn’t know who I was anymore — just that the old me was gone. Then came Casper — my service dog, my best friend, my reason to fight forward. Now, Casper and I are doing something no one believes can be done: a nonstop solo circumnavigation of the globe… starting from the wrong side. We’re sailing east, into the wind and current, through the Southern Ocean and past the Cape of Good Hope — proving that after cancer, life isn’t over. It can be better than it ever was. But we’re not just breaking records. We’re launching a nonprofit to help cancer survivors rediscover purpose, identity, and joy. This GoFundMe isn’t just to keep our sails full. It’s to build something that lasts long after we return. Donate today — not just to help Casper and me sail around the world, but to help thousands of survivors believe they can start again. Let’s show the world what’s possible. 👉 https://bit.ly/BravestDogInTheWorld 🎼 🎵 MUSIC: 🎵 🎼 INTRO: Song: Chime & Nytrix - RunawayMusic provided by NoCopyrightSoundsFree Download/Stream: http://ncs.io/CN_Runaway OUTRO: Song: Coopex, KHEMIS - If Looks Can Kill [NCS Release] Music provided by NoCopyrightSounds Free Download/Stream: http://ncs.io/IfLooksCanKill Watch: http://NCS.lnk.to/IfLooksCanKillAT/youtube

Making Sense of Marine Chain Standards: https://www.practical-sailor.com/sails-rigging-deckgear/anchoring-mooring/making-sense-of-marine-chain-standards Are you relying on anchoring advice that could put your boat on the beach? In today’s video we’re diving deep into the dangerous anchoring myths that continue to circulate in the cruising world — myths that have literally caused boats to drift ashore, drag in squalls, and end up smashed on reefs. Whether you're a new cruiser or a seasoned liveaboard, there are anchoring “rules of thumb” that sound helpful… but are completely wrong. Today we’re breaking down: – Why you actually need chain, and how much is REALLY enough – The myths about catenary, scope, and “just throw out more rode” – Caribbean anchoring realities (100–300 feet of chain is normal!) – Why mixed rode isn’t always safer – The hidden dangers of old or mismatched chain – Windlass mistakes that cause groundings – The anchor-alarm misconceptions that let boats drift into shore We’ll also reference real anchoring research, expert articles, and real-world cruising experience to help you anchor more safely and avoid becoming the next boat washed up on the beach. If you anchor, cruise, or live aboard — this is a “must watch” before you trust your ground tackle again. In this episode, we moved up to the northwest corner of Taha’a to stage for our sail to Huahine the next day. What followed was anything but ordinary — from a rough encounter with a local, to a joyful reunion with friends, and even a priest’s blessing for Blown Away! Don’t miss this episode. #raiatea #priest #taha’a #huahine #friends #sailing NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. After our generator was stolen, it became clear that being remote doesn’t automatically make you safe. It just means help is a long way away if something goes wrong. So in this episode, I’m finally taking security seriously and putting systems in place to stop a future intruder before they ever get close. This isn’t about paranoia or turning our land into a fortress. It’s about being realistic, learning from a hard lesson, and protecting the tools and equipment that let us build this homestead and document the process. I walk through my security strategy in order of priority — explaining why each step matters and showing exactly what I’m installing as I go. LIKE, SUBSCRIBE and COMMENT - VOTE Yes if you think the Transom doors are safe and NO if you think they are NOT!!! WATCH - https://youtu.be/_wK55agpLYk Are transom doors on Portofino catamarans a brilliant innovation… or a serious offshore risk? 🌊⚠️ In this episode, we take a deep dive into one of the most debated design features of the Portofino 52 catamaran — the aft transom doors that give incredible sea access, but also sit directly in the firing line of following seas and breaking waves. We ask the hard questions every offshore sailor should ask: • Can transom doors leak in heavy seas? • Could they fail catastrophically in extreme conditions? • Are storm boards really necessary — or outdated? • How strong is 15mm acrylic (Perspex) when it’s wave-slammed? • What happens to acrylic after years of sun exposure? To get real answers, we go straight to the source — Rafael, the designer — and break down the engineering, materials, certifications, drainage systems, gaskets, aluminum frames, and wave-impact design behind these doors. This isn’t theory. This is real-world boatbuilding, explained in detail. You’ll also learn: ✔️ Why these doors are RINA-certified watertight ✔️ How pressure from waves actually seals the door tighter ✔️ Why the dive room acts as a coffer dam for safety and buoyancy ✔️ The hidden long-term danger of UV-damaged Perspex ✔️ Why older boats fail — and modern ones don’t We finish by putting the decision back to you. 👉 Would you trust these transom doors offshore? 👉 Storm boards: Yes or No? Drop your vote in the comments and join the debate. If you love sailing, catamarans, yacht design, boat safety, offshore cruising, and behind-the-scenes boatbuilding, make sure to like, subscribe, and hit the notification bell — because the Portofino 52 launch is coming, and you won’t want to miss what happens next. In this episode dive into the history of these boats and the interesting story about the stolen design. We also dive into the front lockers and find a lot of useful and useless stuff. #boatlifeisbest -------------------------------------------- Welcome to Boatlife is best. We bought a cheap and neglected 49ft Performance catamaran for just $52.500. It is an Ocean Cat 49 built in 2000, and we are in the process of refitting it and getting it sailing again so we can continue our voyage around the world. Hop along for the ride while we try and give this incredible boat a second chance at life and finally crossing some oceans. Fixing stuff along the way and creating an incredible floating home.
