It has been a year long dream of ours to complete our Pacific Ocean crossing and sail to New Zealand and here we are, starting the final leg as we set sail from Tonga. But before we sail all the way to North Island, we have one more stop to make along the way - a sunken island in the middle of the ocean! We picked up our crew in Tonga so there will be three of us onboard for this passage - a journey that is renowned among sailors for being a tough route, with scary weather and difficult conditions to battle. But with an extra pair of hands we are up for the challenge so join us as we set sail and face up to whatever the ocean has in store for us. It has been an incredible journey across the Pacific Ocean so far and we can't wait to see what other surprises await us. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ππ» Support us ππ» PATREON: www.patreon.com/redseas TIPJAR: www.tpjr.us/redseas NEW MERCH STORE: www.red-seas.com/shop For more information about Zora, check out www.iNav4U.com Or see it in action here: https://youtu.be/SHxncGqlpng π¬ Follow us on social media π¬ FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/realredseas INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/realredseas β° Time Stamps β° 00:00 Sailing across the entire Pacific Ocean 01:35 Setting sail to New Zealand 05:56 Sailing with a new crewmember 08:40 Huge waves on our offshore passage 12:41 Racing our sailboat across the Pacific Ocean 13:41 Behind the scenes on our ocean crossing 15:29 Land ho! 17:05 Sailing to a sunken island π΅ Music π΅ All tracks can be found at Epidemic Sound. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - π Our Story π We're Iain and Brioni [The Reds] a couple of redheaded Scots who sold everything we own and moved halfway round the world to buy a boat that we could call home. We've always just sailed our catamaran with only the two of us onboard but this stretch of ocean has its own risks and so we are bringing on a third crew member to help us reach New Zealand safely. We have truly loved our time in Ha'apai, Tonga, and so we make one more stop as we head South to the capital where our new crewmember is flying into, and the whales make one more appearance as we sail between shallow reefs and tiny desert islands in a beautiful part of the world. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ππ» Support us ππ» PATREON: www.patreon.com/redseas TIPJAR: www.tpjr.us/redseas NEW MERCH STORE: www.red-seas.com/shop For more information about Zora, check out www.iNav4U.com See a full tour of the system: https://youtu.be/SHxncGqlpng π¬ Follow us on social media π¬ FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/realredseas INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/realredseas β° Time Stamps β° 00:00 Coming up 00:53 Sailing to pick up our new crew 06:40 Whales chasing our sailboat 09:21 Best surf spot in Tonga 12:32 Our last island stop in Tonga 16:59 Catching a huge fish on our handline 19:57 Is it better to sail downwind with a spinnaker or full sails? As we sail around the world on our boat, we recognise that there is a certain amount of risk that we need to accept alongside the rewards that this lifestyle offers us. And usually it pays off - we get to swim with whales, dive with sharks and live on uninhabited remote islands with long sandy beaches. But there is always a seed of doubt or concern in the back of our minds that we are only one bad decision away from total disaster. A sailor's worst nightmare is seeing the conditions change, outside of their control, and losing everything as a result. And in the remote islands of Tonga, help is usually extremely far away. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ππ» Support us ππ» PATREON: www.patreon.com/redseas TIPJAR: www.tpjr.us/redseas NEW MERCH STORE: www.red-seas.com/shop For more information about Zora, check out www.iNav4U.com Watch our full tour of the system here: https://youtu.be/SHxncGqlpng?si=sxEocTp5wldGatZ1 π¬ Follow us on social media π¬ FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/realredseas INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/realredseas β° Time Stamps β° 00:00 Risk vs reward when you're sailing 01:02 Sailing the outer reefs in Ha'apai, Tonga 03:50 Sailing the same route as Captain Bligh's mutiny 08:43 The real reason we sailed here - shipwreck! 10:38 Nimbus Orbit chair from Coast New Zealand 12:18 Diving a shipwreck 17:22 Looking for more clues 19:58 Sailing with wild humpback whales (super close up!) 22:48 Rescued from a sinking boat π΅ Music π΅ All tracks can be found at Epidemic Sound. Watch our Zora video: https://youtu.be/SHxncGqlpng Pre-order Zora now: www.red-seas.com/zora We sail through the dangerous middle, the ocean that runs between Tonga's islands, along a volcanic ridge from north to south. As we sail from Vava'u to Ha'apai, we cross uncharted shallows, coral reefs and even some humpback whales. It's a fast run in great conditions and our sailboat just won't slow down. When we reach our new destination just before sunset, we are amazed at the beauty of these islands. We have to complete some paperwork to officially register our boat in this part of the country and then we're rushing to make the most of the time that we have here and trying to see as many new islands as we can. Don't forget, we're going to the Metstrade Boat Show in Amsterdam next week so let us know if you're going to be there - we'd love to see you! Support our BIG REFIT and help us keep our boat afloat: www.red-seas.com/refit We were surrounded by humpback whales as we sailed south through the islands of Tonga, from Niuatoputapu to Vava'u. We lifted anchor and set sail for a couple of days to reach our destination but as soon as we left the pass, we were surrounded by whales in every direction! These beautiful creatures were swimming alongside us, and breaching everywhere we looked. What an incredible experience! When we arrive in Vava'u, we get straight to work with an upgrade and repair to our watermaker - we've been struggling with issues for months as we sail between some of the most remote islands in the South Pacific....have we finally fixed it?? We're just trying to keep Indioko floating until we arrive in New Zealand later this year, where we have a massive refit planned. ποΈ Sailing to the Real Treasure Island | First Impressions of Samoa [Ep193] If you grew up reading stories of floating islands, daring escapes, and hidden treasures, this episode will feel like stepping straight into a childhood storybook. π Our journey brings us to Samoa β a place some even call the real Treasure Island. After zig-zagging our way across the Pacific, we finally reach these volcanic islands that feel worlds apart from the remote atolls weβve been visiting. Bigger, more built-up, and rich in culture, Samoa offers a very different kind of adventure. From bustling local life to quiet anchorages, this place surprised us at every turn. In this episode, we share our first impressions of Samoa: the warm welcome, the challenges of arriving by sailboat in a less-traveled corner of the Pacific, and why this island chain feels like the living heart of adventure. We have struggled with the electric tilt on this outboard for almost a year now, sometimes finding ourselves stranded in remote places without being able to beach our dinghy or take it to shore or through shallow waters. We were amazed at the service from Junior here in Apia, not just because he got things fixed nice and quickly but because our courtesy car in his sports fishing boat was just crazy fun! Should we switch out our inflatable for a metal tender?? We celebrate reaching the future and missing a day, then hold on as the sea state picks up but we finally see land and enjoy a much calmer arrival into Apia with a downwind spinnaker run along the north coast of Upolu. When we finally make it into port, it's time to tackle some boat jobs. We get to grips with replacing our lazy jack lines and in a bonus episode we also fix our outboard motor for our dinghy. One 47ft catamaran. 350 miles of empty Pacific Ocean. π This passage takes us from the remote cliffs of Niue to the volcanic shores of Western Samoa β and along the way, we face everything from heavy weather to sleepless nights at sea. People always ask: βHow can just two of you possibly cross oceans alone?β The answer is here β in the storms weβve fought, the mistakes weβve made, and the resilience weβve built. What once felt impossible now feels like the start of something bigger. In this episode, youβll experience the reality of ocean passagemaking: unpredictable winds, long night watches, gear failures, and the thrill of finally sighting land after days offshore. More than just sailing β this is what it means to chase freedom across the worldβs most remote waters. If youβre drawn to sailing life, bluewater cruising, and exploring islands far off the beaten path, this is your front-row seat. βΈ» β± Timestamps 0:00 Can two sailors really cross oceans alone? 01:05 Dolphins in the anchorage 2:42 Lessons from storms & mistakes 03:48 Sailing plans, setting course for Samoa 06:26 Watch pattern for shorthanded sailing 08:06 Our priorities when we're sailing offshore 10:35 How we sail at night 13:20 How we sleep in the middle of the ocean 16:56 Sail changes offshore in rough conditions 19:49 How we sail alone across oceans 21:05 Sailing with your partner βΈ» β Subscribe for more Pacific adventures π¬ Would YOU cross 350 miles of open ocean with just two people? π Like the video if you love true adventure stories #SailingPacific #BluewaterCruising #Niue #Samoa #adventuretravel - - - - - - - - - - - - - ππ» Support us ππ» PATREON: www.patreon.com/redseas TIPJAR: www.tpjr.us/redseas π¬ Follow us on social media π¬ FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/realredseas INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/realredseas π΅ Music π΅ All tracks can be found at Epidemic Sound. After leaving the wild breakers of Beveridge Reef, we set sail across open water, battling unpredictable winds, zero visibility, and an arrival deadline we cannot miss. Our destination? A place so controversial that some countries deny it even exists. With towering cliffs, hidden caves, no safe anchorages, and a one-of-a-kind system for hauling dinghies out of the ocean, this remote island feels like another world. π΄ Along the way, we share the challenges of passagemaking in rough seas, the generosity of locals, and the incredible βcruiser mailβ network that connects sailors across oceans. We have a damaged line lifting our main sail and if we don't replace it now, we might find ourselves with bigger problems the next time we're out sailing offshore in big winds and that could be a disaster. So even though it is not ideal conditions, we have to try and make this repair before we can set sail for the next island.
