Sailing offshore in the winter months looking for Northern Gannets and North Atlantic Right Whales. The females and calves use the shallow and warm continental shelf to have their young after an 18 month gestation period. The calves grow at an amazing 50 lbs per, HOUR! Yep, they have to put on a thick layer of blubber to survive the colder northeastern coast during the summer months when their food source is rich and plentiful. What an amazing ocean creature experience. We stayed super far away to give them room to do what Whales do. Have you ever heard a 🐋 whale? It is April and still very cold in The Netherlands, but I cannot wait to make my miles on my new boat. The day starts at 5:30 AM, with plans and preparations for a solo tour around North Holland which means that I solosail at sea for the first time. As the wind builds beyond force 5, I choose backup and set sail together with my husband Mark. Fresh bread, strong winds, and an early departure set the tone. What follows is an 11-hour upwind sail toward Enkhuizen—locks, freighters, reefs in the mainsail, and winds up to 27 knots.
