BACK TO BOAT LIFE for ONE of us.... Sometimes love demands more of us than we expect. www.sailingnandji.com Honestly, Our lives have been all over the place of late. One moment we’re stranded in the Namibian desert… A new motor and two thousand kilometres later, we are back in South Africa, only to be told we must fly home with in 7 days. Nandji is packed up, Landji is in storage, and suddenly we’re in Australia and straight into completing our first round of IVF. From the month injections and doctor visits we created One precious embryo… one fragile hope. To give that little chance everything we had, we slowed down.We stepped away from the noise, and tried to just be healthy and happy. Skatepark runs, workouts, beach hangs, and early-morning surfs to quiet the mind. But calm never lasts long in the lives of Nandji. One morning in the surf, tore my MCL clean off the bone. Eight weeks in a brace, another hurdle we never saw coming. But with time slipping away, we made a choice we never thought we would face: Bonita will stay in Australia to complete the embryo transfer, and I’ll return to South Africa and the boat alone to get her ready for the Atlantic Oceana and the miles ahead. We didn’t plan to walk this road apart… But sometimes, to keep the dream alive, we have to divide to conquer. Life is NOT EASY, how many more challenges can we have? www.sailingnandji.com We had dreamt for years about sailing to Africa, so when we finally arrived, we were determined to make the most of the opportunity and explore the African continent properly. We bought ourselves a Land Rover Defender and set off inland on our very own safari adventure. But what was meant to be a dream side-trip, quickly became the beginning of a chain of events that would test us more than we ever expected. Events that continually plague our journey It first begun with constant car troubles… and ended with a complete engine failure in the middle of the desert. One tow-truck ride, a weekend sleeping in a shed, and two long weeks waiting for a replacement engine later, we were finally back on the road driving 2,000 kilometres toward the life we know best: Sailing, and our floating home, Nandji 2. We have always sailed with our dog but Travelling with animals adds a layer of complexity, therefore our hound dog Marley has been living it up at a doggy resort while we’ve been away. We couldn’t wait to get back to him. But as we reached the border into South Africa, we were hit with another curveball. Even though we had been out of the country for months, immigration granted us only seven days and advised we must fly home. Suddenly everything changes again… Get Early access to our videos here - https://www.patreon.com/Nandji #boatlife #sailing #sailingaroundtheworld #sailor #sailingfamily #ivfjourney #ivf Support Sailing Nandji here ❤️ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Nandji Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/Sailingnandji For a once off pledge, check out the Paypal link above Merch: https://sailingnandji-shop.com I recommend the coffee mug 👌 Socials and all the other places you will find us🤘 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sailingnandji Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sailing_nandji Website: https://www.sailingnandji.com SUBSCRIBE to our Newsletter on our website for updates on our adventures! Well that was all over before it begun... www.sailingnandji.com Six weeks ago, we rolled out of South Africa with one goal: to explore Southern Africa in our trusty Defender, Landji. But as it turns out… Landji had a completely different adventure in mind. Somewhere in the heart of the Namibian desert, casually bouncing along a lonely dirt road, everything changed. In an instant where Landji suffered catastrophic engine failure. A trip ending kind of problem By midnight, Landji was being winched onto the back of a tow truck, and we bounced along in the darkness back to a town while we tried to figure out what on earth just happened. Subsequently the weekend was spent sleeping in a shed, then two long weeks waiting in the desert, waiting for a new rebuilt engine to bring Landji back to life. And now—here we are. Stuck in the middle of nowhere. slightly delirious… and absolutely losing our minds. Skeleton Bay and SURFING the WORLDS BEST WAVE! If ONLY we weren't BROKEN DOWN... www.sailingnandji.com We have just spent the last month on the adventure of a lifetime, over landing through the vast African desert in a Land Rover Defender. It’s been wild, rugged, sometimes frustrating and dusty… But honestly, even though we have been miles away from our sailboat and the ocean, we still can’t wipe the smiles off our faces! And I know what you’ve been thinking as you’ve watched us bouncing around down inland dirt tracks: why on earth are there surfboards in the car? Well, there was no way I was coming all this way to the country home to what many call the best wave on the planet, without trying to catch a few myself. After weeks of desert roads, starry nights, and bush camps… we’ve finally made it to the coast. And not far down the road is a place every surfer dreams about… Skeleton Bay. Sailing around the world for us, isn’t just about hopping from one port to another, it’s about chasing experiences and visiting places on earth that are intriguing and beyond the shoreline www.sailingnandji.com Right now, we’re thousands of miles from the ocean, surrounded not by waves, but endless dunes of sand… and somehow, we are still happy! We took a massive leap of faith on this trip, setting off on the adventure of a lifetime across Southern Africa and now here we are, deep in the Namibian desert, bouncing along in Landji our Defender. The landscape is dry, rugged, and unforgiving… yet, it’s alive in ways we never expected. This striking contrast — the beauty hidden in the barren land is exactly what we came looking for. Africa is unlike anywhere else on Earth. And sure, our car has tested our patience more than once… but that’s how memories are made and what makes the journey unforgettable. Before leaving Africa, we wanted to see as much of this incredible continent as possible. What better way to do it than the African way, Overlanding in a Land Rover Defender www.sailingnandji.com Now here we are, hundreds of miles from the coast, surrounded by endless sand, deep in the Namibian desert. But things haven’t exactly been going smoothly. From day one, our Defender’s been giving us headaches, it’s chewing coolant and overheating. We feared the worst: a cracked head gasket and engine rebuild. On advice, we headed to the remote desert town of Keetmanshoop, where we could find a Land Rover mechanic. To our surprise it was not a head gasket, but a cracked radiator. A quick replacement later, and we’re back in business. We had prepared ourselves to be stuck here for days, maybe even weeks… but now, with a brand-new radiator and fresh energy, it’s time to pack up, hit the open road, and keep this African adventure rolling. This could possibly be the most impressive thing we have ever seen! www.sailingnandji.com It has been 9 years since we begun sailing around the world and whilst we love boat life and sailing, we love travelling and enjoy an adventure of any kind. Arriving to the shores of South Africa, we thought what better way to experience this continent than in the most iconic way possible, a Land Rover defender. Sure you haters out there only think of the air conditioning and reliability of a Toyota, but we are all about the adventure. Memories are not made from the comfort of a Hilux. Therefore we introduce you too Landji. Our Land Rover Defender, currently full of problems… Whilst we made it across the border in time, we now have a challenging 800 miles of Namibian desert to cross to reach the mechanic we have been advised that can help. However what lies between us and the mechanic and us is the harsh barren Namibian desert, sand dunes, rocks and dirt roads but also, a trip of life time and a journey we won’t forget anytime soon. Be sure to check out all of their catalogue, for both yourself or a gift for a loved one! After the most stressful border crossing of our entire lives, we have found ourselves a couple hundred miles inland and in the country of Namibia! The feeling is surreal. We are used to being surrounded by ocean and now, we are in the desert. The contrast couldn’t be more extreme. This trip was always a gamble, but before leaving Africa, We wanted the full, iconic African experience, just us, the open road, and our Land Rover Defender. But ole "Landji" has other plans. It’s losing coolant with no visible leaks, clean oil, and that dreaded EMS alarm won’t stop and with my seriously lack of car knowledge showing through, We’re starting to suspect a cracked head gasket… and potentially a full engine rebuild, both, we can’t do in this town. Whilst we crossed the border in time, the hard part isn’t behind us... it’s still ahead. After a few days of downtime to regroup and plan our next move, we are off to the Land Rover guy in Windhoek, 800 kilometres away. Through the desert. In Africa. What could possibly go wrong? We have spent the last six months enjoying the raw beauty of South Africa… but before we were prepare to set sail across the Atlantic to the Caribbean, we realized — we weren’t quite ready to say goodbye to Africa. We spent years dreaming of sailing here to then leave after such a short time didn’t feel right. With winter in full swing and our time in the country running out, we made a bold decision: to squeeze in one final adventure — the most African adventure we could dream up. So we emptied our bank account and invested in a once in a life time opportunity Meet the newest member of our family. Landji. A 2010 Land Rover Defender Nandji 2 is now safe and sound in the marina, the Landji is packed, and finally we are on the road heading north to Namibia. But we had no idea this border crossing would be one of the most stressful experiences of our entire 10 year journey thus far… Get Early access to our videos here - https://www.patreon.com/Nandji #boatlife #sailing #sailingaroundtheworld #sailor #sailingfamily #africa #sailingafrica #southafrica #capetown Support Sailing Nandji here ❤️ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Nandji Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/Sailingnandji For a once off pledge, check out the Paypal link above Merch: https://sailingnandji-shop.com I recommend the coffee mug 👌 Socials and all the other places you will find us🤘 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sailingnandji Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sailing_nandji Website: https://www.sailingnandji.com SUBSCRIBE to our Newsletter on our website for updates on our adventures! We bought a Land Rover Defender... Let the troubles begin!!! https://www.sailingnandji.com For years, we dreamed of sailing across the Indian Ocean to reach Africa. And last year, that dream became reality. Now after sailing the entire coastline of South Africa and before departing for the Caribbean, we want to experience and explore Africa further. There is so much more to Africa than just wild seas and marina docks. It is such a unique and untamed place, filled with stories waiting to be discovered. And What better way to do it than the African way, Overlanding. Whilst our boat stays tucked safely away for winter, we're heading out on a new kind of adventure: a wild, off-grid safari across the southern countries of Africa. There’s a twist. We’ve got under 2 weeks before we need to leave the country of South Africa, and a mountain of things to sort before we can begin to live out of this car. We don't want to leave Africa but is the DUMBEST thing we could have done? https://www.sailingnandji.com There are places that feel like they belong to another world and hidden between the towering tableland mountians and the blue of the Atlantic Ocean, this place feels like one of those. We continually are told by the locals - "South Africa is not for Pussies!" and we couldn't agree more! https://www.sailingnandji.com Welcome to Hout bay and the windy city of Capetown. We have preached it enough in our videos to underdstand that South Africa is raw, rugged, beautiful and WILD! and Arriving into Hout bay and the city of Capetown is no exception! The huge mountains that surround the bay, the tales told from our friendly welcoming guide of the "rough areas" and witnessing stabbings, muggings etc.. then the natural landscape towering above the beautiful beach, the low pressure systems that blow in with torrential rain and gusts of 50 knots. The Cape of STORMS aka the Cape of Good Hope. We Rounded one of the 3 great capes! https://www.sailingnandji.com After rounding the most southern tip of Africa with the spinnaker flying, Nandji 2 then motored her way into the breathtaking False bay in the early morning light — Arriving into the small town of Simons town, The false bay yacht club itself is an awesome club and is the first marina I can remember where the water is that clear you can see the sea floor under your keel. However, Currently for international cruisers there is only limited space and therefore we had to give up our berth after a week. But for that week, we made the most of exploring this unique corner of Capetown and wow — what a place. The abundance of wild life this close to the city was amazing. From the thousands of seals in the bay, to the penguin colony at boulders beach, the abundance of shark cage diving vessels suggesting what else lies beneath the surface and then lets not forget the baboons patrolling the streets. Simons town was a great example of why we love South Africa, wild and totally unforgettable But, as all good things must come to an end, it was time to give up our berth and head back to sea — continuing our journey along the South African coastline, and inching closer to the iconic city of Cape Town and rounding the infamous Cape of Storms!! Use the codeword: sailingnandji at the checkout, put the blades in your cart and get 100 for free! 👉https://hensonshaving.com/sailingnandji After months of calling the breathtaking town of Knysna home, we finally exited through the legendary and notoriously treacherous — Knysna Heads. We hoisted our sails and set out to sea on a passage that would take us around the wild most southern tip of Africa, where two mighty oceans collide. Instead of the roaring seas and furious weather this area is known for, we were met with an eerie calm. Thick fog wrapped around us like a ghostly veil, and the ocean lay calm beneath our hull. We then rounded the infamous Cape Aghalus with our asymmetrical spinnaker flying high! I am sure That’s not something many sailors would have in their log books. This moment marked a massive milestone for our circumnavigation: we’ve officially crossed into our third ocean — the Atlantic — leaving behind and saying goodbye to the wild energy of the Indian Ocean. We made landfall in False Bay under the most magical conditions, and now, a whole new adventure awaits — new places, new faces, and the city of Capetown to explore Sure enough, we didn’t have to go far to run into a baboon. We were told after the fact, that most afternoons the baboons hike down the mountain into town looking for a quick and easy feed. Now, Baboons are proper scary, they are as big as Great Dane, smart and have zero fear. Departing through the Knysna heads and then sailing around the MOST SOUTHERN TIP OF AFRICA! It was always on our radar as a must see destination, but we never expected it to steal our hearts as much as it has. The stunning landscape combined with a picturesque safe all weather lagoon and a tight-knit community full of character and whilst the scenery is breathtaking, it has been the people who have made it unforgettable. We laughed, played, sailed and connected and felt something rare when travelling: the feeling of home. Living on a boat is an emotional rollercoaster. Why is it every time we haul out things don't go as planned... www.sailingnandji.com We have had an amazing last 15 months, sailing over 10,000 nautical miles, crossing the vast Indian Ocean, exploring some seriously remote places, traversing the Mozambique Channel and flying down the wild coast of south Africa. Through every storm and every swell, our beloved Tayana, Nandji 2, has been our steadfast and sturdy home. But life on a boat comes with one constant: maintenance. So we’ve hauled her out here in the breathtaking town of Knysna to tackle some much-needed out-of-water projects and get her ready for our next big challenge: sailing around the most southern tip of Africa, the infamous Cape of Storms and then into the mighty Atlantic Ocean. We chose to do the haul-out here with our good mate Dave, partly to delay our farewell of this incredible place. Knysna has truly captured our hearts, and saying goodbye won’t be easy. But the sea is calling, and before we set sail once again… it’s time to get to work. Take your personal data back with Incogni! Use code SAILINGNANDJI at the link below and get 60% off an annual plan: https://incogni.com/sailingnandji The Indian ocean is no joke. It is rough and windy and the 8000+ miles we sailed. last year has taken its toll on Nandji 2. But for the past couple of months, we have been soaking in the stillness, enjoying life with the boat not moving and settling into the charm of a small coastal gem, here in South Africa The town of Knysna Most international cruisers making their way around South Africa tend to rush through this notoriously challenging coast line, eager to reach the calmer Atlantic waters and the city of Capetown Because of that, many sailors skip past Knysna all together, put off by its tricky entrance But, not us We made the decision early on to take our time and sail this coast line slowly and treat each stop as a destination in its own right. We had spent years planning to sail to Africa, so what’s the rush! Though no place has captured our hearts quite like Knysna From the welcoming locals to having the opportunity to tour the Vision catamaran factory and then test sail freshly launched catamarans multiple times, it has us wondering, Do we want to be South African? And Are we catamaran people now? (NO) Although as winter starts to settle in and the chill sets through the hull, it is time to turn our attention back to Nandji 2 and get her ready for the next big adventure Get Early access to our videos here - https://www.patreon.com/Nandji #boatlife #sailing #sailingaroundtheworld #sailor #sailingfamily #africa #sailingafrica #boatrepairs #boatwork Support Sailing Nandji here ❤️ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Nandji Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/Sailingnandji For a once off pledge, check out the Paypal link above Merch: https://sailingnandji-shop.com I recommend the coffee mug 👌 Socials and all the other places you will find us🤘 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sailingnandji Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sailing_nandji Website: https://www.sailingnandji.com SUBSCRIBE to our Newsletter on our website for updates on our adventures!
