It’s not just a list of what I bought, but what each piece is for, why I chose it, and how much I paid. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are building a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life. We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams. It was nearly time to leave the Anambas Islands. After one last look at the remote stilt villages and the quiet rhythm of life out here, we cleared out and prepared for our next passage — sailing toward Johor Bahru, Malaysia. But this wasn’t going to be a straightforward trip. With the northeast monsoon setting in, we were met with grey skies, steady rain, and unsettled conditions. Salut les loulous ⚓⛵ Je largue les amarres avec l’excitation d’un nouveau départ. Direction Boa Vista. L’ancre remonte lentement, les voiles se hissent… mais le vent, lui, se fait attendre. La mer est calme, presque trop. Je décide alors d’aider un peu le destin en lançant le moteur. Le bateau glisse, docile, sur une eau d’huile. En chemin, une rencontre inattendue vient briser la monotonie : un dauphin surgit, élégant et libre, fendant les flots à mes côtés. Fasciné, je me précipite à l’avant pour immortaliser l’instant. Dans mon élan, j’oublie l’essentiel : mon gilet de sauvetage. Une erreur. Une vraie. La mer, même calme, ne pardonne jamais l’imprudence. Le voyage se poursuit sans encombre, et bientôt les côtes de Boa Vista se dessinent à l’horizon. À l’arrivée, je mets pied à terre, encore imprégné de cette traversée. Je pars explorer les environs. Sal Rei m’accueille avec ses maisons aux couleurs vives, éclatantes sous le soleil. Les ruelles respirent la simplicité et la douceur de vivre. Je flâne, sans but précis, porté par l’atmosphère tranquille du lieu. Puis vient la plage : vaste, lumineuse, presque irréelle. Le sable fin et la mer turquoise offrent un contraste apaisant après l’immensité de l’océan. Je prends un moment pour m’arrêter, regarder autour de moi, et savourer l’instant. Ici, à Boa Vista, quelque chose s’apaise. Dimenticate per un attimo le spiagge bianche e i tramonti tropicali, oggi vi portiamo nel cuore pulsante della manutenzione nautica: il cantiere navale di Scarborough. La nostra povera Y2K aveva decisamente bisogno di amore, così ci siamo rimboccati le maniche. Tra la rimozione dei vecchi adesivi a caldo e la tanto odiata carteggiatura, fortunatamente Alex (il nostro mago del refit) ci ha dato una grossa mano, portando lo scafo a specchio senza fare un filo di polvere! Nessuna traccia di osmosi grave, solo un paio di bollicine sistemate con resina epossidica. Siamo stati davvero fortunati a incrociare lui e la sua azienda, Squid & Co: lavora in modo impeccabile ed è un professionista altamente consigliato per chiunque passi da queste parti! Il CPT Max, nel frattempo, non sta certo con le mani in mano: tra la pulizia del teak con un nuovo tool elettrico Ryobi prestato proprio da Alex, lo smontaggio dell'elica di prua e la revisione totale della pompa ad alta pressione del dissalatore ZP, il lavoro non manca. Ma la vera doccia fredda è arrivata dalla fabbrica di galvanizzazione: i primi 30 metri della nostra catena dell'ancora sono irrecuperabili. Cosa conviene fare in questi casi in Australia? We’re relocating our digital compass from behind the saloon to the front cabin. Right now it’s too vulnerable to magnetic interference from all the metal things we want to store in the saloon, which means we can’t use that storage the way we’d like. In this video I’ll show you: How I use a magnimeter to hunt for a good new location How the compass calibrates to measure the local magnetic field and compensate for interference We won’t know for sure how well the new spot works until we leave port and do a proper sea recalibration! We leave Garry’s Anchorage and begin our journey up the incredible K’gari (Fraser Island) coastline. Our first stop – South White Cliffs. With great holding and protection from the ever-reliable Easter weather in Queensland, it’s the perfect place to tuck in, reset, and get a few important jobs done onboard. Because let’s be honest… boat life is never just sailing. While at anchor, we: – Repair the sail bag using a new speed sewing awl – Deal with (yet another) toilet issue… will it ever end?! – Reroute freezer cabling under the saloon floor to free up space and improve the setup And of course, no productive day happens without good food – Kym shares a go-to frittata recipe that keeps everything running smoothly.
