Getting building materials to a remote Alaska job site isn't always as simple as loading up a truck. While we were in Juneau aboard our 80-foot steel schooner, Alaskan Gypsy, our friends at Second Growth Homes needed a small load of plywood and tongue-and-groove hauled out for an A-frame cabin project in Southeast Alaska. So Gypsy became the delivery truck. First, Scott had to figure out how to get the lumber out of a covered U-Haul van at Juneau's freight dock without a forklift, using a crane he'd never operated before. Then we had to get everything aboard Gypsy, balance the load, beat the falling tide and get underway. From Juneau, we carried the materials out of the city and eventually transferred them from Gypsy onto a small barge that could reach the remote cabin site. It's not a huge load of freight, but it's a good glimpse into the logistics of building and working in remote Southeast Alaska, where boats, barges, tides and a little improvisation are often simply part of getting the job done. ROUGH seas BROKEN eggs DAMAGED boat There's no use crying over broken eggs while rough seas batter our damaged catamaran as we continue sailing south through the Caribbean Sea towards Trinidad. Until now, we've been able to take our time, pausing to enjoy the islands, wildlife and most importantly, waiting for the best weather windows before moving on, but that luxury is running out. Our haul out date in Trinidad is approaching and with a damaged hull beneath us we can no longer afford to wait for perfect conditions. Greece marked its fishing nets with something red or white. Sicily improvised — an oil jar, but at least an orange one. In Spain a fisherman once used a life jacket, and the coastguard went full rescue mode thinking somebody was in the water. Portugal uses a single green plastic water bottle, floating flat, invisible to the eye and too small for the radar to see. Portugal is the final boss. This is the week we crossed the border. We left Mazagón at eight in the morning, spent nine hours dodging fishing gear and watching for fins, and somewhere off the coast went from one country to the next — which mostly meant an hour back on the clock and a green-and-red flag going up at the spreader. Then the entrance to Faro, a channel with tides, not much water and a plotter reading single figures. Two days on Ilha do Farol, an island of white houses and a red-and-white striped lighthouse you can see from the anchorage. Then the run to Portimão, which is the one that needed thinking about: the best orca ground sits right there, and about a hundred metres inshore of it the chart goes to three metres, then one. There is no comfortable line. This is the day the catamaran earned its keep. And then the job this whole leg has been waiting for. Our watermaker has been dead since Spain — no showers for a week, buying drinking water ashore. The new pumps were shipped to a yard that said they could fit them and then said they couldn't, so I did it on the cockpit table: one pump full of corrosion with the bearing ring destroyed and the rotor chewed up, one still working and going into the spares box. At half past one in the afternoon the pressure came up to six, and fresh water came out of the tap. Next week we head out into the Atlantic for Porto Santo. Sometimes the weather decides how long you stay — and in Arctic Norway, that can turn a sailing stop into something much more interesting. In this episode, we leave the tiny island community of Myken and sail towards the remote Træna archipelago, just north of the Arctic Circle. What begins as a short passage soon becomes an extended stay as rough seas and strong winds build between us and our next destination. Our final days on Myken don’t quite go to plan. Much of the footage we filmed there was accidentally lost, but we still get to share a glimpse of this remarkable island: a community of only 13 permanent residents, an extraordinarily well-stocked grocery shop, and a distillery created after two fellow sailors were stranded here by bad weather. From Myken, we make the roughly 20-nautical-mile passage to Træna in beautiful conditions, crossing remarkably shallow, clear water before carefully making our way into the harbour. With deteriorating weather approaching, Træna becomes our home for longer than expected — and gives us plenty of time to discover what lies beyond the harbour. We explore the islands by bike and on foot, visit the historic wooden Træna Church, and discover the extraordinary story of Theodore and Alma: a brother and sister separated by thousands of miles between Norway and Hawaii, connected through letters, a Kodak camera and photographs that eventually became an invaluable record of island life. We also visit the Petter Dass Chapel before taking an early ferry to another island for one of the strangest hikes we’ve encountered so far — straight through a dark tunnel inside the mountain. On the other side we find dramatic coastal scenery, an unusual public shelter overlooking an anchorage and Kirkhelleren, a huge cave where evidence shows people were gathering thousands of years ago. Meanwhile, the weather offshore isn’t improving. With significant wave heights around 2.5–3 metres and maximum waves forecast even higher, we decide there is little reason to force the next passage. Instead, we stay in Træna, watch the forecasts and wait for the sea to settle. Sometimes cruising isn’t about getting somewhere. Im Herbst 2023 haben wir uns einen weitern Traum erfüllt und uns eine Maxi 84 gekauft. Diese wurde von uns Ende Oktober 2023 nach Kiel überführt. Seit dem widmen wir uns im Winterlager auch diesem schwedischen Segelklassiker, im Sommer erkunden wir die Dänische Südsee. After five days at sea, the fleet has been put through a serious test. For Malizia 4, there has been no time to rest. After the earlier issue with the port foil, the crew has faced further technical problems onboard, all while sailing through some seriously demanding conditions. Imagine your autopilot suddenly stops working in the middle of a squall, with gusts reaching 40 knots, while one crew member is steering through a rough sea, another is reefing the mainsail and the others are down below trying to get the system back up and running. That was the reality onboard Malizia 4. And Gauthier's footage from inside the action is SPECTACULAR. ⚡️ With almost 1,500 nautical miles covered, the fleet has been pushed hard by strong winds, big seas and constantly changing conditions. Now, a high-pressure bubble ahead could bring the boats back together and completely reshuffle the race. In this video, we step aboard the Marcopolo MP12, an all-new Italian adventure yacht that combines a distinctive explorer-inspired design with the performance and versatility of an outboard-powered cruiser. At 12.7 metres long and just over 4 metres wide, the MP12 makes impressive use of its dimensions. Its broad, flared bow creates a huge amount of usable space forward, while the modular aft layout can be configured around either entertaining or relaxing on the water. Fold-down bulwarks further open up the aft deck, creating an unusually spacious connection with the sea. Performance is also a key part of the MP12's character. Its three-step hull was developed using CFD to provide stability and balance at speed, while the boat can accommodate up to three 450hp outboards. The enclosed hardtop and cruiser layout also make the MP12 a genuinely versatile boat, designed to move between open-air day boating and more comfortable overnight cruising. Below deck, the MP12 offers two cabins and four berths, alongside a bathroom with a separate shower. The interior combines natural wood, technical materials and automotive-inspired Dinamica upholstery to create a surprisingly refined environment for a boat with such a strong adventure focus. Ever have trouble getting it up? Well, yeah we did. In preparation for our move to Texas, we are checking out all essential systems. One of those being our Lofrans Falcon 1700 watt windlass and maneuvering the anchor. The anchor deployed nicely but the windlass couldn’t get it up easily. More to diagnose, more to fix and to be continued. We’ve mounted our new Garmin 8610xsv chartplotter turning our cockpit into a starship helm. Just kidding, but it will be really nice having two chartplotters for obtaining cruising and weather information. Unfortunately, at first there was a bit of an issue with the NMEA 2000 network. Not all the devices were showing up on the chartplotters. After several lengthy diagnostic sessions, Steve figured out there appeared to have a ground loop. It’s all been corrected, all devices appearing on the chartplotters and they look great. The NMEA 2000 network also got a new look. Using two Garmin NMEA 2000 4-Port T-connectors several single T-connectors were replaced. Steve attached the network backbone to a custom made wooden mounting board and secured it in place. It is a much cleaner installation and will still provide easy access for maintenance and future additions. Still working on our Salsa steps. Isabella is a sailing ketch and is considered a 1990/2010 model. It has four private cabins, an engine room, salon, galley, and three heads with two separate shower stalls. The hull is fiberglass and is considered a bluewater cruiser. Isabella has an excellent capsize ratio of 1.68 and a very good comfort ratio of 42.19. She is equipped with Garmin / Raymarine electronics and has hydraulic steering. The naval architect was Michel Bigoin who also designed the largest sailboat in the world which was manufactured in 1976 and called Phocea. It was a 246 foot four masted steel schooner and was considered the largest private sailing yacht in the world until 2004.
