Brutal - The word crews have been using to describe the opening stages of the Ocean Race Atlantic. The upwind start was uncomfortable enough but then the fleet engaged with a weather system that looked capable of carrying them across the Atlantic. The catch? Sailing close to the trailing edge of a cold front, where strong breeze promises speed — but the wind direction and sea state don’t align. Most had the pace to stay with the system but few had the speed to break through the front into a more organised sea state where they could properly put their foot to the floor. The result: fast sailing, boat breaking seas and a relentless battering for the crews. I tried fly fishing for Chinook salmon on Vancouver Island — and quickly discovered I had a lot to learn. Here’s to visiting fascinating places! I headed up-island to Nile Creek Fly Shop, where the owner, and my friend, Courtney, gave me a crash course in targeting Chinook on a fly rod: reading the river, choosing the right setup, presenting the fly, and understanding what these powerful fish are doing as they push upstream. Armed with a new Vision Coast 8-weight fly rod, I climbed back into Bluey, my 1981 VW Westfalia, found a place to camp beside the river, and went fishing. The salmon run was incredible. Chinook were charging through the shallows, fighting their way upstream — sometimes literally crashing onto the bank. And once I started figuring things out, I began hooking fish. Landing them was another matter. This episode is part fishing lesson, part road trip, and part first attempt at something I've wanted to learn for a long time. The roll over of a Spirit hull is a milestone moment in the build process. Once the hull has been built by our talented team, it is moved outside the yard to allow it to be rolled 180 degrees by two cranes. Suspended in mid-air in two slings, the wooden hull is slowly turned over, with careful supervision from the yacht's build team. 🌊 7 Beaufort mit einer 3,94-Meter-Jolle – das kann nicht immer gutgehen… 😅 Bei unserem Törn mit der Topaz Magno auf der Ostsee wurden aus sportlichem Segeln schnell jede Menge Kenterungen. Starker, böiger Wind, bis zu ca. 1,5 Meter Welle und eine kleine Gleitjolle mit zwei Erwachsenen an Bord. Mehrfach konnten wir die Magno wieder aufrichten – manchmal kenterte sie direkt danach wieder. We say goodbye to Guadeloupe and set sail for Dominica, but it definitely isn't the smooth Caribbean sail we were hoping for! The day starts with a bad feeling in my gut before we head out into a rough, lumpy sea for the crossing to Dominica. 🌧️⛵ It isn't our most comfortable passage, but eventually the dramatic green mountains of the Nature Island appear ahead. Checking into Dominica turns out to be surprisingly easy, and we're finally free to start exploring but the rain won't stop! Our first adventure takes us to a beautiful beach where we discover a shipwreck along the shore. Then we decide to try something different and jump aboard the local bus to explore farther… except things don't exactly go according to plan. 😂 That's cruising life — rough sails, unexpected discoveries and plans that seem to change by the hour! The rain just keeps coming… 🌧️ This week aboard Motherload, the skies are gray, the rain is relentless, and somehow we’re finding ways to turn the chaos into an adventure. Between going a little stir-crazy in the rain, hanging out with friends, creating our own fun, and trying to make the most of cloudy days, our pup Finch has a much bigger challenge to face—surgery. ❤️🐾 And while life feels a little slower right now, there’s a lot happening just beneath the surface. Several BIG projects are looming on the horizon, and we know the calm before the storm probably won’t last much longer. For now, though, we’re staying on this path. They also talk about how life at sea makes them more attentive to one another, with simple but important questions such as: “Did you get enough sleep?” and “Did you eat?” At the end of the video, Julien and Justine discuss the weather strategy ahead. With a large area of high pressure and a zone of lighter winds approaching, it could be the perfect opportunity to close the gap to the boats ahead.
