Sailing the Costas on the Southern coast of Spain can be difficult as there are very few places to anchor with protection from the South. The weather in March and April can be quite unpredictable and as we found you can get some viscous katabatic storm blasts off the snow topped mountains along the Sierra Nevada's. We are trying to get to Cartagena for Easter as they put on quite a show in the town, the sun is shining but the wind is not playing ball. There is no wind for sailing at night so we hav to contend with some very rolly anchorages! Remember if you are wanting some great sailing cloths for summer then we still have a 15% discount on Henri Lloyd's excellent range. As you saw in our last episode, we arrived into Pulau Air in the middle of the night — carefully squeezing between two reefs before finally dropping anchor in a quiet lagoon. Safe to say… that was enough adrenaline for one day. After a tense arrival, we’re more than ready to kick back and enjoy something a little stronger than water — and the timing couldn’t be better. Our very first onboard brew is finally ready! In this episode, we slow things down, soak in the beauty around us, and celebrate a small win after a challenging passage. There’s nothing quite like that first sip after earning it the hard way. 🎥 In this episode: • Our first morning in Pulau Air • Recovering from a late-night reef entry • Life at anchor in a remote lagoon • Finishing (and taste-testing) our first homemade brew • Much-needed relaxation after the chaos This is what it’s all about — the highs, the lows, and the well-earned moments in between. 👍 Like & subscribe to follow the journey!

In this episode of the Sailing and Cruising the East Coast of the United States podcast, hosts Bela Musits and Mike Wasserman sit down with a true legend of the modern sailing era: David Southwell. David recently made headlines by taking first place in the 2024 OSTAR (Original Single-handed Transatlantic Race), one of the most grueling and prestigious solo races in the world. Sailing across the North Atlantic is never a simple feat, but doing it in the month of May means battling unpredictable weather patterns and contrary winds. As Bela notes, it is often considered the "wrong way" and the "wrong time" to be out there, yet that is exactly what the OSTAR demands. David shares the fascinating history of the race, which began in 1960 as a half-crown bet between sailing icons Francis Chichester and Blondie Hassler. From his childhood dreams inspired by Robin Knox-Johnston to his rigorous training in the Bermuda One-Two, David discusses the mental and physical preparation required to win a solo transatlantic race. Whether you are a weekend cruiser or an aspiring ocean racer, this conversation offers invaluable insights into the discipline and "moxie" needed to conquer the open sea alone. Key Takeaways & Highlights The History of OSTAR: Discover how a simple bet in 1960 birthed the original single-handed transatlantic race. The "Wrong Way" Across the Atlantic: Why racing from East to West in May is one of the toughest challenges a sailor can face. American Excellence: David joins an elite list of Americans (including Phil Weld) to ever win this historically French-dominated race. Solo vs. Crewed Racing: Mike and David break down the radical difference between managing a boat with a team versus being the only soul on deck for weeks. Training for Greatness: Insights into using the Bermuda One-Two as a stepping stone for world-class ocean racing. Episode Chapters 00:00 – Intro: Sailing and Cruising the East Coast with Bela Musits & Mike Wasserman. 01:03 – The challenge of crossing the North Atlantic in May. 02:18 – Solo vs. Crewed: The reality of long-distance racing. 03:00 – Welcome David Southwell: The 2024 OSTAR Winner. 04:00 – The origins of OSTAR: Francis Chichester and the 1960 bet. 04:30 – French dominance in ocean racing and the story of "Moxy." 05:05 – Inspiration from Robin Knox-Johnston and the Golden Globe Race. 05:12 – Training grounds: The Bermuda One-Two from Newport to Bermuda. Resources Mentioned OSTAR Race Official Site: Learn more about the Original Single-handed Transatlantic Race. Bermuda One-Two: The premier solo/double-handed race from Newport to Bermuda.

After a tough offshore passage, we arrive in Tanzania for our first real taste of Africa… and it wasn’t quite what we expected. Our journey begins in Tanga, a quiet coastal town where we reset after days at sea, navigate the full boat check-in process, and explore the incredible Amboni Caves — the largest limestone cave system in East Africa. From there, we sail south to Zanzibar, where everything shifts. More people, more movement… and a completely different energy. From busy beaches and traditional dhow boats to the contrast between tourism and local life, this stop gave us a glimpse into a side of Africa that’s hard to put into words. Along the way, we share the realities of arriving in a new country by boat, a bit of sailing tradition, and the moments in between that make this lifestyle so unique. This is what our first days in Africa really looked like. ⸻ ⛵ In this episode: • Sailing into Tanzania • Clearing into Tanga (immigration, customs & port health) • Exploring the Amboni Caves • Life onboard after a rough passage • Sailing to Zanzibar • First impressions of Zanzibar • Local culture, tourism & daily life • A unique sailing tradition moment ⸻ 🌊 Join Our Sailing Family Adventure! We are back… but not the same. After years living full-time on a sailing catamaran, crossing the Mediterranean and building a life at sea, something started to change. This journey didn’t begin on the ocean. It started with a van, a map, and a simple desire to live life more intensely. In 2021, we made one of the biggest decisions of our lives: we left everything behind and moved onto a boat, even without experience, without certainty, and without a clear plan. Since then, we’ve faced storms, fear, mistakes, and moments that pushed us far beyond our comfort zone. But we also discovered something deeper. A different way of living. A different way of seeing the world. From life at sea to exploring Italy on the road, this is the story of how everything evolved… and why things are no longer the same. This channel is about that. Not just sailing. Not just travel. But the decisions that change everything. And this is just the beginning. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 🌟Join us on Patreon. We are Patricia and Ed. We have been living on a 46 feet Catamaran and exploring the world on the water! We have always loved to travel and explore new places around the world. Our first extended trip was a road trip in the US were we got to see over 20 states and ride 30.000 kilometers on our ECO Friendly Van. It was simply awesome and raised our awareness to the fact that we did not have to be tight down to a land home to continue to work and travel. Now, we’re on a sailing exploration journey attempting to circumnavigate the world aboard JOY. Patricia did not have any previous sailing experience, but was willing to learn on the fly. Now neither of us are too technical and know how to fix things too much, super rich or retired, but we always had big dreams. Tacada has been beloved since day one and it shows. With detailed cruising and maintenance logs available. This Navigator is a rare find in this condition. The boat shows extremely well and pride of ownership is evident. The bright and delightful (3) stateroom (2) head interior is covered in high gloss woodwork. With a full size fridge and freezer and light Corian counters. This yacht feels like home from the moment you step on board. With every amenity needed for long-distance cruising or a full-time liveaboard! Stored in a full winter cover in the offseason. Hauled out yearly for – service, paint and cleaning at RVYC. The carpeted engine room appears spotless, with great access around each engine. All systems are operational. Power is twin Volvo Penta TAMD 63 High Performance engines with 370hp each and 1865 hours. All service and maintenance items are documented. Engines and generator fully serviced last fall.

El Hierro è l'isola più a sud delle Canarie e quindi la terra più meridionale di tutta l'Europa. Lo si può vedere benissimo nel piccolo villaggio con annesso porticciolo de La Restinga. We are in a race against time. And it’s a race we must win. At Team Malizia, racing has always meant more than crossing the finish line first. We push ourselves to compete at the highest level of offshore sailing, but we are also part of something much bigger. A race that concerns every one of us: the race against climate change. Every mile we sail, every project we create, every story we share is guided by one belief: we must be bold, we must innovate, and we must never give up. We don’t believe in waiting for perfect solutions. We believe in taking action. Because when it comes to protecting our Ocean and our planet, every step forward matters. Big or small, each action adds up, and together, we can create real change. As we prepare to launch our new boat, take on new races, and grow our projects, our mission remains the same: to use the power of sport, science and storytelling to inspire ambitious climate action. Dream big with us. Be part of the race. This is who we are. This is what drives us. And this is only the beginning. Stay tuned. © Flore Hartout I Team Malizia ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Follow Our Team On Social Media: ⬇️ Instagram Team Malizia: https://www.instagram.com/team_malizia/ Instagram Boris Herrmann: https://www.instagram.com/borisherrmannracing/ Facebook Team Malizia: https://www.facebook.com/teammalizia/ Facebook Boris Herrmann Racing: https://www.facebook.com/borisherrmannracing/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@team_malizia LinkedIn Boris Herrmann: https://www.linkedin.com/in/boris-herrmann/ LinkedIn Team Malizia: https://www.linkedin.com/company/14832074 #borisherrmann #teammalizia #imoca #imocaglobeseries #offshoresailing #sailing #racing #aracewemustwin #climateactionnow #BorntoRace #foiling #foilingeneration #ARaceWeMustWin #TeamMalizia

There are boats designed to move you. And then there are boats designed to excite you. The Cranchi A32 Luxury Yacht Tender does both, combining refined design with a driving experience that’s all about speed, balance, and control. Out on the water, it reveals its true nature. At 4,200 RPM it cruises effortlessly at 25 knots, maintaining the same fuel consumption per mile as at 20 knots, thanks to an optimized angle of attack that enhances efficiency without compromising performance. Push it further, and the character becomes even more dynamic. At 32 knots, fine trim adjustments unlock its full potential, delivering precision and responsiveness at every turn. Powered by twin 280 HP Volvo Penta V6 engines, it reaches 36.5 knots with ease, and still feels ready to go beyond. A luxury tender that doesn’t just take you places, but transforms every run into an experience. This week on Escapade, we install one of the biggest upgrades we’ve been looking forward to… a brand new watermaker. We already had a watermaker onboard, but it was old, clunky, and increasingly unreliable — not exactly what you want when you’re preparing to head out into the Pacific. If we’re going to be spending long periods off-grid, we need something we can truly rely on… and ideally, something that can keep up with demand too. Our new Seawater Pro system produces up to 40 gallons per hour, which completely changes the way we can live onboard. Less time worrying about water, more freedom to explore. In this episode, we take you through how we install it— mounting, plumbing, wiring, and getting everything dialed in — before putting it to the test for the first time. Check out Seawater Pro here: https://seawaterpro.com/ If you enjoyed this episode, don’t forget to subscribe and follow along as we continue getting Escapade ready for the Pacific 🌊 #sailing #watermaker #offgridliving LOVE OUR CONTENT?? After finally reaching the Algarve coast in Portugal, we thought the worst was behind us. But still sailing through orca territory, we’re not out of danger quite yet. What was meant to be a short anchor stop at Culatra Island turns into something else entirely when we get stuck, because when we try to leave, the ocean has other plans...😫 This becomes one of our most intense sailing exits so far. Later, we sail through the night toward the river that separates Spain and Portugal, anchoring right between the two countries. 🇵🇹🇪🇸 If you’d like to become a Patreon and support our work, and get exclusive content plus early access to our videos, click here 👉https://www.patreon.com/c/sailanddoxie/membership We are so thankful for every single one of you 🫶 📍 Route: Culatra ISland (Portugal) to Mazagón (Spain) 🧑‍✈️ Crew: Erik, Linn & Nora the dachshund If you're new to our channel, welcome! 🩵 We’re Linn and Erik, a Swedish couple in our late 20s who quit our jobs, rented out our apartment, and set off to sail from Stockholm to the Mediterranean together with our sausage dog.
