Installing the Furuno NavNet TZtouch XL on SV GOAT — Full Helm Upgrade & Feature Walkthrough After running a TZtouch3 onboard for a while, I finally pulled the trigger on the new Furuno TZtouch XL [TZT__X]. In this video I walk through the full install on SV GOAT — from unboxing and pre-wiring through NMEA 2000 integration, Ethernet backbone, power, and first boot — then show you the chartplotter features that actually matter when you're liveaboard and crossing oceans, not just day-tripping. If you're upgrading from a TZT2 or TZT3, or speccing a new helm from scratch, this should save you a few of the mistakes I made. 🧭 CHARTPLOTTER FEATURES COVERED TZ MAPS with BathyVision — the new vector/raster/3D bathymetry charts AI Avoidance Route — auto-routing around hazards, one-tap send to autopilot Risk Visualizer — 360° collision-risk visualization (requires Furuno radar) TZ Weather — free enhanced forecasts + optional premium high-res service Dynamic Mooring with community updates TZ Cloud sync — waypoints/routes between MFD, TZ Navigator, TZ iBoat Edge-swipe hybrid touch UI (on 10"/13" models) / full-glass IPS (16/22/24) OTA software updates over Wi-Fi Full Furuno Ethernet network: radar, sonar, AIS, autopilot, cameras NMEA 2000 + NMEA 0183 integration 🔧 INSTALL TOPICS Rear-port color-coded connectors (big change vs TZT3) Power wiring & DC protection NMEA 2000 backbone — adding the XL to an existing network Ethernet backbone and why TZT3 ↔ XL sharing is limited (important gotcha) Radar integration — [DRS4D-NXT / Halo setup reference] AIS, VHF (IC-M510BB), and depth/heading data routing Mounting, cable runs, and helm layout on a Lagoon 400 ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 Intro — why I swapped from TZT3 to TZT XL [00:XX] What's in the box [00:XX] Helm prep & removing the old unit [00:XX] Rear connector layout [00:XX] Power wiring [00:XX] NMEA 2000 integration [00:XX] Ethernet backbone [00:XX] First boot & initial setup [00:XX] TZ MAPS walkthrough [00:XX] AI Routing & Risk Visualizer demo [00:XX] TZ Weather & TZ Cloud [00:XX] Final thoughts — what I'd do differently ⚓ GEAR IN THIS VIDEO Furuno TZtouch XL [model] — [affiliate link] Icom IC-M510BB AIS — [link] [Radar model] — [link] [Transducer / other] — [link] Some links are affiliate — they don't cost you anything extra but help keep the channel running. 🎬 WATCH NEXT NMEA 2000 network troubleshooting on SV GOAT → [link] Full SV GOAT electronics tour → [link] ⛵ ABOUT SV GOAT We're [Max & crew] sailing SV GOAT, a Lagoon 400 catamaran, across the Med and beyond. Howdy folks! Welcome back to Nomad Boat Building. My name is Mark Reuten, and this video is part of the Poulsbo Boat Project, where I’m documenting the complete build of a traditional Poulsbo Boat from start to finish. In this episode, we build the station molds—the forms that define the shape of the hull. These molds are critical to the entire build, as every plank we install will reference them. Instead of using plywood, I walk through my preferred method of building molds from solid 1x material. This approach is more economical, easier to work with in the shop, and allows the material to be reused after the molds are no longer needed. We go step-by-step through laying out the mold shape from the plans, transferring the geometry using simple tools, cutting the curves on the bandsaw, and assembling the molds with gussets and cross spalls. Along the way, I also cover notch layout for inwales and risers, fairing considerations, and a few lessons learned (including what not to do). The Poulsbo Boat is being built using strip planking with cedar strips, reinforced with fiberglass inside and out—a blend of traditional and modern boatbuilding techniques. If you're interested in woodworking, traditional craftsmanship, and practical boat shop problem solving, this series follows the entire build from start to finish. I had a realization this week… I’ve started to forget how unusual this life actually is. We’re sailing the Cape Verde islands, living full-time on our small sailboat — something that once felt completely out of reach. And yet, somewhere along the way, it started to feel… normal. In this episode, I head out alone on a hike up Monte Gordo on the island of São Nicolau while Floh recovers from an injury. Out there, surrounded by nothing but ocean and rugged volcanic landscapes, I’m reminded of something simple — and powerful: the importance of feeling awe. Because this life hasn’t become less extraordinary… I just got used to it. ⛵ In this episode: – Sailing from Tarrafal to Mindelo – Life on a sailboat in Cape Verde – Solo hiking Monte Gordo (São Nicolau) – Reflections on awe, perspective & slow travel – Living full-time on a sailboat Sometimes, all it takes is a moment alone to remember what once felt impossible. 👇 Have you ever experienced something that once felt extraordinary… becoming your normal? Facing the challenges of solo sailing as a female sailor, I navigated the highs and lows of single-handed sailing while tackling DIY boat repair projects, from engine fixes to full boat refits on a budget. My life aboard was a mix of adventure and reflection, shaping an independent woman’s story of resilience, personal growth, and embracing the sailing lifestyle. Along the way, I became an ocean conservation activist with In Mocean, stumbled across my dog Boga, and discovered the joys and challenges of sailing with a dog. Now, I’m exploring a new chapter, having jumped aboard my partner’s Hallberg Rassy Rasmus with Boga and his Australian Kelpie, Jango. Together, we face the unique dynamics and challenges of sailing as a couple, balancing off-grid life, sustainable sailing, and the demands of long-term cruising. Can you imagine a boat shaped like a zipper? 🤐🌊 Discover the incredible story of the "Zip-Fastener Ship", a masterpiece created by Japanese artist Yasuhiro Suzuki. What started in 2004 as a simple optical illusion from an airplane window became a real naval engineering challenge capable of carrying passengers and sailing the waters of Japan. In this video, we explore: ✈️ How the idea to "hack the viewer's perception" was born. 🚤 The first tests with the radio-controlled prototype. 🛠️ The hydrodynamic challenges to achieve the perfect foam lines. 🌊 Its full-scale debut at the Setouchi International Art Festival (2010). 🗼 Its iconic navigation down the Sumida River in Tokyo (2020), symbolically "sewing" the city together with the sponsorship of YKK. While it may seem like a trivial concept, there are countless hours of calculation and design behind this peculiar hull. 👇 Let me know what you think in the comments! Did you know about the Zip-Fastener Ship? If you want me to keep analyzing other weird and curious ships, let me know! #ZipFastenerShip #Boat #boating

Need a VA clinic in the Dominican Republic? We found one in Puerto Plata, and it’s a game-changer for veteran cruisers. . THE GRIND: We hauled our veteran carcasses off the boat in Luperon and pointed the truck toward Puerto Plata (19.7934° N, 70.6884° W). The mission? Navigating the VAFMS technical hellscape for C&P exams and picking up Bella’s Titer Test results. That folder took a literal trip to Europe and back just so we can get her back to the States. . THE PIVOT: We checked into a $60/night Airbnb to abuse the "free" water. Between "Rapido" and "Fuzzy" settings, it was a race to strip the Luperon silt out of our shirts. Seeing that grey laundry water was the lifestyle win we needed. . THE REWARD: A night of hot showers (until they weren't), a massive burger, and a run to the "secret" wholesale spot for the cheapest Ron on the island. We capped it off with a brand-new Black & Decker coffee maker and a move to a safer mooring "zip code" near the mangroves. Hell, I’d rather fight a mosquito than a runaway hull. . TRAVEL FAQ: Q: I’m terrified I’ll lose my VA benefits living in the DR. Is there help? A: The forensic bottom line is yes; Puerto Plata has dedicated VA service providers. Ensure your contact info is updated in the VAFMS portal before you arrive. If your paperwork isn't squared away, your reimbursements hit a brick wall. Having a high-quality scanner on board is a requirement for this life. Q: Can I really get my dog back to the US from here? A: Yes, but it requires a Rabies Titer Test. You have to send blood work to an approved lab (ours went to Europe). It takes weeks to process, so plan your trip well before your departure date. Don’t let the USDA catch you at the border without that folder. Q: Is it safe to stay in a cheap $60 Airbnb in Puerto Plata? A: It’s functional and generally safe, but expect it to be loud. The roads are narrow enough to shave the paint off a donkey. We used it primarily for the "laundry race" to get the boat grime out. Watch out for those bathroom "step-ups"—they’ll claim a toe if you aren't careful. Q: Where do I find the best deals on rum and gas? 4 Tage. Kein Plan.
Not every sailing day goes to plan… and this one REALLY didn’t 😅 We kick things off with a beautiful, calm sail past Cabo Rojo Lighthouse—one of the most stunning coastlines in Puerto Rico. But from there… things start to unravel. We anchor in La Parguera hoping to experience the famous bioluminescent bay… but it’s a total fail. Next stop, Ponce, for a much-needed resupply—but we tried to take a short cut to the store which involves one of our sketchiest dinghy rides yet, battling waves crashing as we enter the creek 😬 (fail #2). Hoping to turn things around, we sail to Caja de los Muertos (Coffin Island)—a stunning island with crystal-clear water. But even here, our hike to the lighthouse turns into another fail thanks to a brutal cactus-covered trail 🌵 Thankfully, not everything goes wrong… we find some incredible snorkeling and wrap things up sailing into Salinas. This is real sailing life—plans change, things go sideways, but the adventure never stops. 👍 Enjoy the video? Hi folks, This video is a bit of a practical one — I’ve just unpacked a 26kg suitcase full of boat parts that I’ve brought back into Tunisia, and I go through it all item by item. It’s not just a list of what I bought, but what each piece is for, why I chose it, and how much I paid. I’ve also included screenshots of where everything came from, along with a few tips on how to save money by sourcing things from the right places before you travel. There are quite a few little tricks in there that can make a big difference when you’re trying to keep costs down while keeping the boat properly maintained. As always, I’ve declared everything properly and show you the paperwork side of it as well, so you can see how that works in practice here in Tunisia Enjoy the video. Returning from our California trip we had a DIY project waiting for us. The Dometic reverse cycle air conditioner unit that was ordered came in early while we were away and was ready for pick up. Getting it from dock to deck to cockpit and finally salon was no easy feat. It is always nerve racking moving something that heavy with the chance of it falling into the drink! Steve had built a plank and it proved very helpful in making the transition easier. There were a few tweaks before the installation of the Dometic. With the previous unit there was an imbalance of airflow. Too much in the main cabin and too little in the salon. Steve custom made a baffle to place in the duct work that would divert more of the airflow into the salon and away from the cabin area. Additionally, the drip pan drain was a little too high to allow complete drainage from condensation. A couple of pieces of wood were secured to the floor of the installation area which would allow the unit to be tilted slightly to provide proper drainage. Finally, the unit was in place and cool air filled the cabin and salon. It’ll make for a comfortable summer. Lots of biting no-see-um bugs are about and can make outside activities unbearable. It was a thrill to see tree swallows darting all about knowing they were catching as many of those bugs as fast as they could. Eat up little guys! It's been a while since we polished our spare propeller and it has been sitting on the aft deck glistening in the sun ever since. Karen went in the aft sail locker preparing to help guide the propeller into place. The area was too tight and she had to come out so Steve could lower it down. Oops, now it looks like we might need to paint that locker. It is so nice to be back home on board Isabella. We truly appreciate all the support from our subscribers and viewers. Looking for a buoyancy aid that doesn't feel like a suit of armour? ⛵️ In this video, we’re diving into the latest from Gill - comparing the fresh new Blue Pursuit with the classic, stealthy Pro Racer in Black. Both are massive favourites in the boat park, but they offer slightly different vibes depending on how you sail. We’re breaking down why these high-cut, low-profile designs are the go-to for dinghy sailors and keelboat racers alike. Whether you’re hiking hard or hooked into a harness, these are designed to stay out of your way so you can focus on the race. The standout features we're looking at: ✅ Massive front pocket - Plenty of room for your snacks, electrical tape, or a multi-tool. ✅ Zero bulk - The side-entry design keeps the front clean and sleek. ✅ Rock-solid fit - Multiple adjustment points so the BA doesn't end up around your ears during a capsize. It’s just a solid, reliable kit that does exactly what it says on the tin. #delfin #delfinrettung #spanien #galizien #segeln #segelboot #nordspanien #sailinglife #vivicam #sailingnavita #segelleben

So, once again, we changed the design of the boat and we built amazing new pieces for our sailboat using precision machines. _____________________________________________________ We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are building a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life. We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams. Welcome onboard "Lani". A beautiful 2002 Leopard 47 cruising catamaran, I had the joy of staying on for several nights while visiting friends Ted and Kim in the Bahamas. Two old friends sit down on a boat and reminisce about one of the craziest adventures of their lives. Back in 1995, we took the Norwegian boat M/S Smirnoff from Norway through the European waterways all the way to the Mediterranean, continued to Turkey, and then sailed back home — a full year of pure freedom. The Wild and True Story of M/S Smirnoff. It was a proper boys’ trip: low budget, lots of laughter, way too much alcohol, girls, and unforgettable moments along the way. From narrow canals to beautiful Mediterranean harbors, this was old-school adventure sailing at its best. We also show original photos from the trip that were published in the Norwegian yachting magazine Båtmagasinet. Many Norwegians still remember the articles! If you love sailing stories, adventure, nostalgia, and real unfiltered tales from the 90s, this one is for you. What was your wildest boat trip? Drop it in the comments! After sailing halfway around the world from Grenada, it all comes down to this final passage. We enter the Strait of Hormuz—low on fuel, low on supplies, surrounded by ships, and navigating in reduced visibility. This was August 2024, before everything changed. With the help of AIS, we thread our way through one of the busiest waterways on earth and make our final approach into Dubai… ending an unforgettable journey across the Atlantic, Mediterranean, Red Sea, and beyond. ***We created this dubbed version to make it easier for some people to follow the story and not miss any details so now you have that option 😊 But if you prefer our original voices in Portuguese with English subtitles, you can watch it here on Travel and Fun - Episode Ep 163 : https://youtu.be/_KCFDFTjqeQ?si=rdCvhexrimiDc0-H Good morning — the sun’s already up here in little Greece, and today we’re setting out to sail and explore off the beaten path of the Greek islands, alright? Think Hidden Greece — this one’s a real adventure away from the tourist crowds. We’re exactly here in Ithaca, Greece — the place tied to an ancient story that eventually became part of Greek mythology, and honestly, it’s pretty wild. Get ready… things get intense in this episode. There’s a lot to show, because sailing and exploring Greece beyond the usual hotspots — away from famous islands like Mykonos and Santorini — has turned out to be something really special. We’re going to discover a side of Greece you don’t usually see on YouTube. A deeper, more authentic Greece that’s absolutely worth exploring — whether by sea, hopping on a revved-up little scooter, or driving around by car. It was incredible experiencing this region in different ways — leaving JOY anchored for a bit and heading inland to uncover the culture, the stories, and how these incredibly friendly locals live their day-to-day lives. We are Patricia and Ed. We have been living on a 46 feet Catamaran and exploring the world on the water! We have always loved to travel and explore new places around the world. Our first extended trip was a road trip in the US were we got to see over 20 states and ride 30.000 kilometers on our ECO Friendly Van. It was simply awesome and raised our awareness to the fact that we did not have to be tight down to a land home to continue to work and travel. Now, we’re on a sailing exploration journey attempting to circumnavigate the world aboard JOY. Patricia did not have any previous sailing experience, but was willing to learn on the fly. Now neither of us are too technical and know how to fix things too much, super rich or retired, but we always had big dreams. What motivates us is the possibility to explore and learn along the way, share our experiences here on YouTube, be helped and help others along this Journey. We want to continue to uncover the meaning of Happiness, Joy and Kindness along the way and hopefully bring something to you that will also make you think of alternative possibilities in life. It was nearly time to leave the Anambas Islands. After one last look at the remote stilt villages and the quiet rhythm of life out here, we cleared out and prepared for our next passage — sailing toward Johor Bahru, Malaysia. But this wasn’t going to be a straightforward trip. With the northeast monsoon setting in, we were met with grey skies, steady rain, and unsettled conditions. And ahead of us lay one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world — the Singapore Strait. For a while, everything was going smoothly… Until we heard a bang. And then the engine stopped. With debris already in the water and heavy shipping traffic ahead, this was not something we could ignore. At that point, we had no idea what had caused it. ⛵ This is Part 1 of the passage — in the next episode, Timo gets in the water to find out what really happened. ⛵ We are Sailing NV — a family of four living aboard an ex-Vendée Globe ocean racing yacht, sharing the reality of offshore sailing, family life, and exploring Southeast Asia by boat. ❤️ Support Our Journey If you'd like to help us keep sailing + filming, you can support us here: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/SailingNV Ko-fi: https://ko-fi.com/sailingnv Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/sailingnv or if you'd like to help us buy something we need, you can check out our amazon wish list https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1G2NJ0EGJLKR0?ref_=wl_share Thank you so much #sailinglife #offshoresailing #boatlife
