What happens when a CAT excavator arrives in remote Alaska with controls that make absolutely no sense? We're in Corner Bay near Tenakee Springs, Alaska, helping Gordon Chew of Tenakee Logging Company get his 2023 CAT 315 excavator working properly. This machine was originally built for the Chinese market and shipped to the United States in a container before eventually making its way into the wilderness of Southeast Alaska. But there's a problem! The joystick controls are completely mixed up. Instead of swinging the excavator left and right, the joystick operates the boom reach. And that's not exactly something you want to deal with when operating heavy equipment! After replacing a faulty alternator, Scott dives into a maze of hydraulic pilot lines, valves, and mismatched connections to figure out what's going on. And in remote Alaska, that's sometimes what it takes. With mechanics, parts, and supplies potentially a long boat ride or flight away, you've got to be willing to troubleshoot and figure things out. Will swapping the hydraulic connections actually solve the problem, or create a whole new one? This almost 40-foot (12 m) catamaran belongs to the first generation of models from the French builder, retaining its essential characteristics: relatively slender hulls, moderate displacement and a bluewater cruising program. ► Designed by Mortain & Mavrikios and launched in 1996, approximately 80 Nautitech 395s are believed to have been built before the model was replaced by the Nautitech 40 in 2003. Most yacht owners have insurance. But how many really know what their policy covers, where that cover applies, or what will happen when something actually goes wrong? In this episode of the Berthon Podcast, Sophie Kemp is joined by Marcel Herrera, Chief Executive Officer of CompareYachtInsurance.com, for a practical look at yacht and boat insurance, without getting lost in the jargon. Marcel brings an unusual perspective to the subject. Before building his career in marine insurance, working across Lloyd’s brokers, MGAs and syndicates, he was a professional yacht racer competing internationally in both inshore and offshore events. That combination of sailing and insurance experience makes this a conversation firmly centred on the realities facing yacht owners.  They begin with a deceptively simple question: what does it actually mean when somebody says their yacht is “fully insured”? Andiamo' is a 2006 Hanse 370e, listed exclusively for sale with YOTI on Pittwater. https://www.yoti.com.au/listing/hanse-370e-andiamo-1 Hanse has become one of the world's largest and most successful production yacht builders, and the 370e is a Judel/Vrolijk design that blends easy handling with genuine sailing performance. It is a very popular model, thanks to its epoxy hull construction, which creates a strong hull with a reduced chance of osmosis. 'Andiamo' has had significant work in recent years. The standing rigging and most of the running rigging were replaced in 2021, and she carries a fully battened tri-radial mainsail (2022), a self-tacking tri-radial jib, a No. 2 genoa (2012) and a Rolly Tasker Code 0 in a sock (2024). Sail handling is made easy with six winches in the cockpit, one of which is electric and used to hoist the mainsail. A really nice sailing feature on this particular Hanse is that she was specified with additional genoa tracks as well as the self-tacking track. To protect the cockpit from the elements, there is a beautiful bimini and dodger with a linksheet in between, and side clears that were new in 2023. Electronics include a Garmin GPSMAP chartplotter down below and Garmin instrument displays at the helm (2018), a Simrad AP16 autopilot, and AIS transmit and receive, fitted in 2022. You can link a tablet wirelessly to the Garmin down below and use it at the helm while sailing. The boat is powered by three 120Ah deep cycle house batteries and an additional engine start battery, which can be linked in an emergency. The bimini has a 100W solar panel on top, and the boat comes with a small 300W portable inverter. Below, the layout is two double cabins plus a double berth in the saloon. The galley has a gimballed two-burner stove and oven, a large 12v fridge and twin sinks. The head has an electric toilet (new macerator 2022) and a hot and cold shower, and there is another shower on the transom. New saloon upholstery was fitted in 2018 and a new Isotherm hot water service in 2024. A drop-down stern access stair makes boarding from the dinghy or dock simple, and a Truekit Navigator 2.5m inflatable with a Tohatsu 6hp outboard is included. The Yanmar 3YM30 has approximately 1,300 hours, and both the engine service and antifoul are dated October 2026. 'Andiamo' would suit those looking for a well-equipped, easy-to-sail cruiser for Pittwater and the coast.
