In this episode we get splashed but the Sardinian weather is holding us back, then we get reunited with our trusty buddy boat Tintomara and finally we find a weather window to continue our journey north along the the Sardinian coast. This trip marked a big milestone – my first proper solo sail on ARGO. I cast off from the marina completely on my own, sailed across to Stradbroke Island in Moreton Bay, dropped anchor in a beautiful spot, then made the return trip and solo berthed back in the marina. It was equal parts exciting, nerve-wracking, and hugely confidence building. While anchored, I made the most of the location and ticked off a few long-overdue boat jobs – tracking down a diesel leak in one of the fuel tanks, fibreglassing a cracked step for the first time, and building some new screens for the hatches. There’s still plenty on the list, but this felt like real progress. Solo sailing pushes you to slow down, think ahead, and trust what you’ve learned. First day of Summer & instead of early morning swims, he head straight for Kotor Marina to meet our electrician to complete the final touches on our water maker! Hughie gets on the job, Shane learns he made a mistake prior and I am humbled once again by the weight of the boat. Once done, we wander the streets of Kotor and get some street food. Das Großsegel ca. 8 m², die Fock rund 2 m² und der Gennaker ca. 10–11 m² machen die Jolle perfekt, um das Gennaker-Segeln zu üben – aber eben auch ziemlich kippelig. Das spüren wir sofort: die ersten Kenterungen lassen nicht lange auf sich warten. Insgesamt werden es 6 Kenterungen – jedes Mal schnell aufrichten, Wasser rausfahren und weiter geht’s. Genau das macht den Reiz aus: wenig Trägheit, direktes Lenkverhalten und jede kleine Gewichtsverlagerung spürt man sofort. Wenn die Magno ins Gleiten kommt, spielt die klassische Rumpfgeschwindigkeit von ca. 9 km/h keine Rolle mehr – mit Gennaker und genug Wind kommen wir zeitweise auf 16 km/h und mehr. Für Einsteiger ist die Magno aufgrund ihrer Stabilität beim Aufrichten perfekt zum Lernen geeignet – aber man muss aktiv segeln und Gewicht trimmen! Wir segeln Höhe, üben Wenden, fahren lange Schläge und probieren Manöver im Trapez. Dabei wechseln wir Rollen: mal steuert einer nur mit der Pinne, mal bedienen wir Großsegel und Fock gemeinsam. Mit unserer Topaz Magno geht’s erneut raus in die Kieler Bucht – direkt vor dem Olympiahafen Kiel-Schilksee. Diesmal zeigen wir ausschließlich die spannendsten Szenen des Törns: die Gleitfahrten bei 4 Beaufort und alle 6 Kenterungen. We’re back after a short break, and a lot has changed aboard Chasing Serenity. In this episode, we explain why we need to haul out for three weeks and why we’re also heading back to Minnesota to prepare our house for sale — a big step toward fully committing to life afloat. On the boat, we’ve been busy with major upgrades. We more than doubled our solar capacity, remove an unsafe central propane system, and convert to an all-electric galley with an induction range. With the oven gone, we build new custom shelves to take advantage of the extra storage space. We also straighten a bent stanchion foot, replace our VHF antenna cable, and properly seal the VHF antenna to prevent future leaks. These projects are part of a larger push to make our catamaran safer, simpler, and better suited for long-term cruising. ⛵ This episode is about progress — stepping back briefly so we can move forward with a stronger, safer boat and a clearer path ahead.
